Half of the world's poorest people have something in common: they're small farmers. In this eye-opening talk, social entrepreneur Andrew Youn shows how his group, One Acre Fund, is helping these farmers lift themselves out of poverty by delivering to them life-sustaining farm services that are already in use all over the world. Enter this talk believing we'll never be able to solve hunger and extreme poverty and leave it with a new understanding of the scale of the world's biggest problems.

Thank You, Mr. Andrew Youn. AN important talk. Because of the title you choose, I expected something a tad bit different ... you do tend to focus in one direction for resolving a very complex problem ... it will take more than this ... but this sounds good on the surface ... I'm not sure, at all, if hybred seeds are a good thing ... there needs to be more research into this approach. Love & Peace to All

We need focus. Target what's the biggest most doable impact. Not solve poverty but solve it for a sizable fraction. Then look to the next group of people that we can make a big impact on. Each organization should focus, and government needs to look at the big picture.

Maybe it is important to go further, and maybe help these farmers to find a way to make their own fertilizers.... and improve the way to distribute their harvest... The greatest success of the human race is that in the late 19th century over 90% of all people on earth lived in poverty and today less than 10% do. In the 19th century less about half of poor children reached adulthood, today that figure stands at over 80%. We still have a long way to go but if we don't recognise our successes, we are likely feel overwhelmed by the challenge or exaggerate it.

As noble as are such efforts, the cause of poverty is systemic. Poverty is one of the tragic outcomes of our systems of law and taxation. This connection was identified in the late 19th century by the American journalist, political economist and social philosopher Henry George. From his predecessors and by his own insights, Henry George traced the cause of poverty to monopoly privilege, particularly landed privilege, the conversion of earth -- our commons -- into private property. For this privilege those who control land and natural resources return to society a small portion of the full value of the benefits received. Every parcel or tract of land has some potential annual value, a value that is not created by the individual owner but by the community's investment in infrastructure and other public goods and services. Henry George argued simply that this value should be publicly collected in lieu of taxes on the incomes we earn, the goods we produce and the commerce in which we engage. What Henry George wrote rings as true today as it did when he wrote. George's campaign to end poverty failed. The powerful saw to it that the movement he started never threatened their privileged position. Yet, he reached many thoughtful people with his message, including Leo Tolstoy, Sun Yat-sen and John Dewey.

Mi idea for a long term solution is that the centers that give humanitarian aid to the poor would mix the food with some kind of contraceptive. The people receiving the help would know there is an ingerable presertive there and would choose to receive the food or not. The same people recivong the aid could work in the production of the food. After all, if they don't have enough food for themselves, why involve an innocent children into that condition?

Thank god this man cares so much! Those poor people living in free societies off of the land itself. They have no debt, insurance, or ipods! Being free from social controllers is such a problem nowadays. We need a totally centralized single world culture. Who needs differing cultural values? We must find new ways to colonize.... errr... to bring these people out of poverty. This way humanity can be unified and all transactions can be tracked and traced so we can use big data computational algorithms so that we can get rid of all this economic chaos and free will.

I think conflating poverty and starvation is not a good idea. The 10% of any group will be in poverty if that's how one defines it. Lack of food is a much better metric, and while I agree that it exists, environmental concerns and opposition to biotechnology on effectively religious grounds are what keep progress from being made on this front.

That talk starts with saying that farmers are poor, but mostly describes areas where the birth rate is totally over the top, like in Subsaharian Africa, 6 children by woman average, these birth rates are totally unsustainable. Traditional communities were not really "poor", but had enough to eat, have some provisions, and everything they needed for clothes, tools etc. Helping them with some infrastructure and instruction is a positive action from these organizations. Also remember that high civilizations are based on inequalities : how can you build pyramids, colyseum or skyscrapers if you don't have masses of poor people ready to work for low wages, usually provided by massive immigration ?
@lightfeather9953
@lightfeather9953 2 жыл бұрын
The idea that masses of poor labor is needed is completely wrong, and stems from communist propaganda. It's misapplying correlation to causation, and lacks basic understanding of marginal utility. Is Japan lacking skyscrapers and modern goods and services to you, without having a poor workforce cohort? Paying the cheapest labor available doesn't mean the labor has to be cheap. Saying that these subsistence farming communities "had everything they needed" is another bad take, common among communist sympathizers. It tries to say modernity is a failure by comparing subsistence farming as the ideal. But in reality it's a miserably poor existence. People work 12 hour days at sweatshops not because they're slaves to capitalism but because subsistence farming is significantly worse, even considering they often are leaving their families behind.

Recommendation for change in World economic system: 1. There is no electricity bill in Libya; electricity is free for all its citizens. 2. There is no interest on loans, banks in Libya are state-owned and loans given to all its citizens at 0% interest by law. 3. Housing is considered a human right in Libya - Gaddafi vowed that his parents would not get a house until everyone in Libya had a home. Gaddafi’s father died while him, his wife and his mother were still living in a tent. 4. All newlyweds in Libya receive $60,000 Dinar (US$50,000) by the government to buy their first apartment so to help start up the family. 5. Education and medical treatments are free in Libya. Before Gaddafi only 25% of Libyans were literate. Today the figure is 83%. 6. Should Libyans want to take up farming careers, they would receive farming land, a farming house, equipments, seeds and livestock to kick-start their farms - all for free. 7. If Libyans cannot find the education or medical facilities they need in Libya, the government funds them to go abroad for it - not only free, but they also get US$2,300/month for accommodation and car allowance. 8. If a Libyan buys a new car from Libya, the government subsidized 50% of the price. 9. The price of petrol in Libya is only $0.14 per liter. 10. Libya has no external debt and its reserves amount to $150 billion - now frozen globally. 11. If a Libyan is unable to get employment after graduation, the state would pay the average salary of the profession as if he or she is employed, until employment is found. 12. A portion of Libyan oil sale is credited directly to the bank accounts of all Libyan citizens. 13. A mother who gives birth to a child receives US$5,000 ; 14. 40 loaves of bread in Libya costs only $0.15 ; 15. 25% of Libyans have a University degree; 16. Gaddafi carried out the world’s largest irrigation project, known as the Great Man-Made River project, to make water readily available throughout the desert country. The water is free of charge. Prior to the international sanction placed on Gaddafi & Libya in the 1980s, the country was one of the richest in the world by GDP per capita - with a living standard higher than Japan. It was the richest in Africa before the revolution. The living standard - GDP per capita is $11,314 for Libya. One cannot claim the Libyans are poor if they live better than many of the Western citizens. Gaddafi always looked after the average Libyan. A country’s wealth used to depend on how much gold it had in the treasury, not how many dollars it traded. Libya also has 144 tons of gold. The UK, for example, has twice as much, but ten times the population. “If Gaddafi had intent to try to re-price his oil or whatever else the country was selling on the global market and accepts something else as a currency or maybe launches a gold dinar currency. Any move such as that would certainly not be welcomed by the power elite today, who are responsible for controlling the world’s central banks,” says Anthony Wile, founder and chief editor of the Daily Bell. 17. Under Gaddafi’s oil-revenue-sharing program, each Libyan gets $500 (DOLLARS) dumped into his or her bank account, each month. 18. Women in Libya have equal rights, not only as a philosophy, but also in practice. 19. Libyans have a direct participatory democracy based on People’s Conferences that puts other “democracies” to shame.

+Garin Easly Those are all good proposals, however, quite the struggle will be needed to implement them. Historically speaking, whenever independent, progressive forces have been established in countries, the rich imperialists have done everything possible to try to sabotage them. For example, in Chile, the democratically elected socialistic president Salvador Allende was overthrown in a US-backed coup, and replaced with the dictator Pinochet. Just look up "authoritarian regimes supported by the US". However, such an anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist struggle is worth it when compared to the status quo of extreme global poverty.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Visit the Learn Liberty Channel and see how the tech you are against is the very thing that IS solving world hunger, along with the fight for human liberty that the US has pioneered. We are not running out of earth, we are getting better at using each acre. The tech that is reducing work for people, is specializing it and making it more efficient, giving all of us cheaper and better food faster than ever before. And freeing us to be engineers, writers, musicians, entrepreneurs of all kinds and freeing the human spirit to do what it loves to do. Profit is an incentive and the main driving force to the advancement of the human species. We are a species that responds to incentives, so anyone with a basic knowledge of the free marked can understand how it is the most constructive and important part of our humanity, even with it's flaws, it is by far the best thing we've got. +WeNeedChangeNOW TCP-TZM I respectfully disagree with pretty much everything you said. The only reason we can even discuss eliminating poverty is because of the market. I think a little historical perspective is in order here. From before recorded history until the adaptation of the market and individual liberty (1776 - The Wealth of Nations and the foundation of the first country based on the ideals of the Age of Reason) almost everyone was "dirt poor." For reference see: ourworldindata.org/Economic-growth-over-the-long-run/ For causation to support my correlation, look to the greatest single event of elimination of poverty in recorded history in the adaptation of capital markets in China. After Mao's central economic planning caused the famine deaths of 18-42 million people (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Leap_Forward#Famine_deaths) China adopted a form of state capitalism (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialist_market_economy) and lifted aprox. 500 million out of poverty. This along with the similar story of India resulted in a total of 1 billion people lifted out of poverty by capitalism in roughly 20 years. I believe I can say without exaggeration that this may be the greatest achievement in the history of humanity, and it is primarily due to a movement away from planned economies and toward capitalism (www.economist.com/news/leaders/21578665-nearly-1-billion-people-have-been-taken-out-extreme-poverty-20-years-world-should-aim). I believe that I have (for a youtube comment) made a strong argument, with references, to support my position that capitalism and the free market are not just theoretically the best method of reducing poverty, but historically and pragmatically proven.

? With the correct mortality rate even having 20 kids a woman can be sustainable. Or even deliver diminishing populations. The whole point of his statement is that if you increase food supply to the people produced by the people themselves instead of shipping in outside food (which is unsustainable and can be unreliable) more children survive. This will cause women not to need 6 children to make sure that at least 2 can survive to supply food for them when they are old. It will also cause some of the children to be very efficient in making food not only for themselves and their parents but also for their brothers and sisters so those could go to school. Within one generation you can half the amount of children per woman by just increasing education. Increasing education will increase food supply which can increase education which can free up people to educate others which increases education which fixes the delivery issue which increases education even more which drives down birthrate and poverty. So yes he has credibility. Since you provide no cause and affect arguments to your statement (you just state some fact is insane and not sustainable) you could have just said the sky is green. But that does not make your statement credible.

This is very simplistic really. Many farmers are poor because they can't own land (especially women), hence no possibility to get a credit and invest because they can't use their land as collateral. There are so many other reasons behind poverty (he also conveniently forget about urban poverty which is way more widespread and complex than rural poverty)
@lightfeather9953
@lightfeather9953 2 жыл бұрын
You totally missed the point. Did you even watch? He said half are farmers. Obviously that means half are not. But the point is NGOs need to be specific about who they try to help. If we can solve poverty for half of the food insecure then we can more easily focus on the remaining people. I just don't see what your point is besides sounding like "it won't solve everything and there are complicated reasons so why bother helping do something, even though he's already shown that this works successfully".

***** I'm guessing you saw the drone shipping network TEDtalk right? Drones aren't actually efficient for transporting large payloads. The problem is more basic. We've reduced childhood mortality in these regions with vaccinations, pest control, and birthing kits but haven't brought up an agricultural infrastructure to support this population surge. Actually the opposite has happened with decolonization.

I think it's weird the way you made a point to say that hybrid seeds are naturally crossed in perhaps contrast to GMO seeds which can do better than hybrid seeds. There are seeds right now that reduce farm inputs needed, resist weeds, pests, and blights thus increasing yields. But we just want to ignore all that? How can you ignore that?
@jo-han
@jo-han 7 жыл бұрын
He's just not mentioning it in this talk because it supposed to be a short talk. GMO's are just a different discussion. There is a merit to GMO's but the people can't GM seeds themselves, they can't buy the seeds because they are to expensive. So you have to start the system by enabling them to buy hybrid seeds or make hybrid seeds themselves, once they make money from that they can pay for there education and go buy GMO seeds themselves. He's not mentioning it because he's against it, it just can't be used to "save the world". Its a tool that could be used where needed to improve the world. Which comes way later in the proces then the proces he is talking about.
@Overonator
@Overonator 7 жыл бұрын
Good points. But you seem to be implying that hybrid seeds are less expensive than GMO seeds but what if the GMO seeds make up for their extra cost (even if they are more expensive) by increasing yields and lower inputs?
@jo-han
@jo-han 7 жыл бұрын
Yes because at first there is a lot more wrong then just bad seeds. If there are more effective basic farming methods not used or not used correctly that cause bigger losses then using more expensive GMO seeds will be a waste of good seeds. Enabling them to make hybrid seeds themselves = educating on good farming methods which will enable them to make more profit on all types of seeds which enables them to buy hybrid seeds and continue making new hybrids and start buying GMO seeds to cross into the hybrids that work for there situation. Its a stepping stone system.

Plus, a lot of GMO seeds have their genomes copyrighted so if farmers that didn't buy the seed from GMO companies have some GMO crop mixed into their farm, lawsuit terror en*sues* (haha pun unintended). Also, some GMO seeds have genetic machinery that prevents the next generation of seeds from being viable. This makes it so that farmers can't use the seeds from their yield for the next season. Hybrids have a lot of the benefits of GMOs, except without the need to buy new seeds every year and possible legal hassle.

According to my experience from the Philippines we need to introduce financial literacy to all walks in life and of course to all sectors. This is how we combat poverty. As long as individuals do not act as business man we loss to combat poverty. Solidary or our bayanihan spirit in the Philippines is being misused. I am the witnessed of this. Poverty is a complex issues bit we need to educate and train the new generation about financial literacy. Without understanding this it is hard to be freed from the cage of poverty. I am talking from my own experience. This is my advocacy - selflove and fight against poverty…

"We just lack the will..." as he show a picture of a bag of money. Why is it so hard to understand that scarcity is an inbuilt function of money? We do not lack the will. The market will assign a price to the things that are most valuable, and to increase profit, act to make those most valuable of things increasingly scarce. This is the primary reason to implement a resource based economy. As long as we continue to use a market to assign value to the things we need to survive, (water, food, healthcare, housing, education, security from violence) these resources will continue to become more and more expensive and scarce.

Or they could stop waiting for our help and start doing something themselves. We spend money on charity missions to build schools in Africa while the entire village stands there watching because they couldn't come up with an idea of building one in the last 2000 years. And poverty it's our fault, sure.
@jo-han
@jo-han 7 жыл бұрын
If you let them get the idea of building a new building for something it wouldn't be a school. It would be something like a church where they can teach the children about the "important stuff in life". That is what happens if you let uneducated people build a school. So you'd need to build them a school and educate them before they realize what the benefit is. So no their poverty is not our fault, nobody said it was. But that doesn't mean we can't help them not stay poor for generations. And it would be for our own good, because one thing being poor does is it breeds religion and extremism and you can't really trade well with the poor. Helping get them out of poverty would be good for our trade, and be good for our security.

It's a good point that we should supply modern farming to these improvised areas. But: The rest of the world does not need food, so they cannot practically come out of poverty just with farming. We have not solved the rest of the poverty problems. The US and other industrialized countries have many poor people, and we don't know how to fix it. That said, the extremely impoverished farmers are an easy target that we might as well hit. Another interesting thing is how the introduction of smartphones has helped 3rd world workers escape poverty.

Having more number of kids is because the death rates are high and more number of kids means more hands on work. It doesn't fit modern logic but remember that poverty stricken people don't have access to experiences of developed world. Major problem is more of type of government in these areas. Better and efficient government will do the job of such ngos more effectively, with more acceptance and helping the country as a whole to grow.

It's a chicken and egg thing to an extent. Government is a reflection of the society. A uneducated impoverished society full of tribalism and nepotism will always be corrupt and ineffective, because they don't care about helping their country.. Instead they care about their tribal social networks. And bigger the market distortion, bigger the incentive to corruption. So govt needs to be lean and focus on the basics of rule of law, property rights. Economies can't flourish unless there's rule of law and property rights.

As long as you call it a "fight" it's not any good I'm afraid. Simple consideration of the facts, an analytic approach with a holistic perspective will lead to conclusion that it's a complex system problem coming directly out of our unsustainable approach to the organization of our society.

उपकर्तुं यथा स्वल्पः समर्थो न तथा महान् । प्रायः कूपस्तृषां हन्ति न कदापि तु वारिधिः ॥ - सुभाषितरत्नसमुच्चय Transliteration: upakartuM yathaa svalpaH samartho na tathaa mahaan | praayaH kUpastRuShaaM hanti na kadaapi tu vaaridhiH || - subhaaShitaratnasamuchchaya Meaning of the subhAShita: In the way a trifle can be of assistance, the great may not be able to. Probably a well can quench the thirst, but never the (mighty) ocean. Commentary: Each in its own space and time. The purpose of one can not be served by the other.A doctor uses knife. A butcher also uses knife. A doctor uses knife for earning his livelihood. So also a butcher uses knife to earn his livelihood. So, the instrument in both the cases remaining the same, viz. knife, but the intentions in using the instrument by the doctor and the butcher is diametrically opposite. A doctor surgeon uses the knife to increase the lifespan of a patient whom he is operating. Lo! whereas the butcher uses the knife to shorten the life of the animal allotted by God. So it is all the intention one entertains in his thoughts and minds that differentiates a butcher a butcher and a doctor a doctor. An ocean may be all mighty and magnificent. But when a thirsty man comes to it, he will look for a different source of drinking water. Although the ocean is a store house of the most percentage of water available on earth, although torrential rains are an ounce in the face of its capacity, not a drop of it is useful in quenching the thirst of a weary traveler! But then, a well, which is a minuscule speck in comparison to the ocean, may very well be a heavenly sight to the parched throat of a tired hiker. Same holds good in all aspects of life. Each person can not be the leader of the world! Politicians think of the next elections. Whereas statesman thinks of the happiness, welfare, wellbeing, safety, security, peace and prosperity of not only the citizen of a nation but also the next generation and all the generations yet to come. If that is true, then who will they lead?! As much as leaders are required, people that need to be lead are essential as well. Every man can't be an chartered architect, chartered accountant, mucision, artist, painter, dramatist, advocate, administrator, etc., there needs to be someone to build the structure as well. That means, the builder can not become the architect either. One person's shoe can not fit another. Like a boat cannot traverse on the road nor the train cannot traverse on the sea nor the aircraft cannot fly on either traversing media, it can fly only on the air because all of them have a different designs for its operation. At the same time, the existence of each and every being is very important. For that matter, the existence of every grain of sand and blade of grass is crucial. If it wasn't required to be there, He would have already made sure that it was not there! If it is there, it already is important and essential. So are beings. If they weren't special and essential, the Lord wouldn't have made them!! Never disrespect anything or anyone based on their pervasiveness. All are indispensable in their own unique ways! Value for what they essentially are. A great man once said, 'Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.'!! What a profound statement that is! pada vigrahaH: उपकर्तुं यथा स्वल्पः समर्थः न तथा महान् । upakartuM yathaa svalpaH samarthaH na tathaa mahaan | प्रायः कूपः तृषां हन्ति न कदा अपि तु वारिधिः ॥ praayaH kUpaH tRuShaaM hanti na kadaa api tu vaaridhiH || r.ramakrishnan, bangalore india 07/07/2016

I truly wish i could live in the liberal utopia that this guy has created for himself. I admit that his hart is in the right place but the reality is that the minute these people have any thing worth taking, ether the government or bandits will swoop down and take it from them. The amount of poverty that a country has i directly related to the type of government that it has. Capitalist Democracies are the only thing that have consistently created prosperity for all economic classes.

Nope. As free as possible. The opinions of Keynesians, Marxists, socialists (of all brands), or anyone with a thirst for power over others, do not get to weigh into what's possible. Look up the "German economic miracle". Germany and Japan recovered faster than Britain, after ww2. Britain was damaged less and got more aid. But the British gov, laws, and regulations survived the war, and it hurt their economy. Japan and Germany went full Keynesian after the 70's or 80's, hence the childless economic coma. For example, get rid of old age security. People who work will earn more money, so they can have more kids and invest in their success, who will then take care of them when they are old. You'll fix the broken home, and childlessness of the west. And those who don't, will be an example to others. When you are a kid and you don't study, you fail and you suffer the consequences. When you are a voting adult and you don't study, you get a new gov program to fix your problems, by robbing others. The free market just makes people face the consequences of their actions. And people are generous enough to help those around them, when they fall through the cracks.

West and US have a functioning capitalist system. Here in Serbia half of people who are working are ''working'' for state and are living great compared to others, there is no real welfare and 100 000 old people get 0$ per month. New oposition party wants to make efficient government, public sector and save teens of billions of $ and give solid welfare to the poor that costs only 0.3 billion $ per year. Giving away money to poor, and those not working costs nothing compared to bilions wasted by public sector, and taxes that kill private sector. You should praise welfare and healtcare system in the west, it will prevent communist revolution, and in Serbia it could mean flourishing of economy/private sector, prevention of civil war and elimination of absolute poverty.

A free market is most efficient in a theoretical universe where all participants in the market are perfectly informed, have no essential needs, and there are no barriers to entry into a particular market. Because these factors are not true (and in fact, impossible) in our reality, government regulation is used to compensate. If not compensated for, these create inefficiencies and unfair situations. Those with more information benefit from trade more (the rich get richer, the poor get poorer). Essential needs can be exploited. High startup costs can prevent markets from becoming sufficiently competitive. This is all simple to intuit logically. Free markets only work in a fantasy world in theory, not in reality.
@Spanky00Cheeks
@Spanky00Cheeks 7 жыл бұрын
SchiferlED Free market is bottom up structure. Your collectivist/socialist crap is top down structure. You think that some guy at a bank can determine what the interest rate is, or how many factories to build. In nature, no one knows how many wolves a forest can support. And no one needs to. Nature sorts it out. If you study free market economics, you'll know what the free market has ways of finding the right answers, with no overhead or manipulation. Top down structure requires a divine being. Some perfect, ideal state, that knows everything, and has no self interest. That's a fantasy. The free market doesn't require any of this crap: "all participants in the market are perfectly informed, have no essential needs, and there are no barriers to entry into a particular market"
