I have only very heavy clay soil in Ireland so I have to grow in pots. Also live in a windy area and zone 8 I would think. Can get cold but rarely less than - 5 celcius. I do hope all my baby maples can clinatize to the wind and rain as its hard to shelter where I live. Beautiful collection you have.

You can put in the ground in clay soil but you can’t dig a hole or else they drown.

Nothing is as good as growing in ground but when I put my clay soil in a pot the plant dies 😅

Yes, this is interesting I have done that too! I think it’s because the clay retains water - I use a blend of finely shredded pine bark mulch and leaf gro (leaf compost)

Try adding small amounts of clay and mix it well with your potting mix. Clay retains a lot of water but it also retains a lot of nutrients so having a little if it it’s actually very beneficial to the plant. NPK isn’t the only nutrient a plant needs to survive, they need 21 nutrients, clay contains lots of those nutrients.
