Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Reb Beach Licks From 2008. I've had several requests for more lessons surrounding Reb Beach, along with several requests asking for more tapping-focused material, so I figured it would be a great idea to combine those two subjects into one lesson - so let's dive in!
The ideas shared in this episode came from a Japanese guitar magazine DVD featuring Reb Beach in 2008, and the footage reveals some great bird's-eye insight into Reb's fiery tapping technique and approach. Specifically, his method of tapping through scales, which is the exact premise behind this entire lesson.
This lesson revolves around the key of D minor (D Aeolian specifically) and while Reb was tuned down a half-step during this footage, I decided to keep everything in standard tuning (to make things simple). So if you want to play exactly like Reb did in the footage, you'll have to tune down a whole step and shift everything demonstrated here up a whole step on the fretboard (two frets). Just a heads up!
Needless to say, if you're a Reb Beach fan, a fan of tapping overall, or maybe a player searching for some new ways to perform/practice scales on the guitar, this episode is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

Of all the guitar guys on KZbin, David's lessons are the most all around useful to me. I hope you don't ever stop what you're doing!

Always thought Reb was a monster player. Took tapping to really cool places. Great lesson and playing 👍

If you'll notice in the first lick, he is not doing a "hammer-on from nowhere". He is picking the string with his ring finger of the right hand and tapping with the middle finger. Great lesson!

Yes, Reb frets the next string up and plucks it with his ring finger, he talks about it on the Cutting Loose video. It's almost like chicken tapping 😂

All these Reb Beach lessons are great - his style is very fluid, especially with his tapping, but you hit the nail on the head when you talk about his rhythm playing, which has feel and attitude, and tone for days

Soooo glad you're covering this lesson from Reb. I could have saved a lot of trouble had I known you did this dive! This is also the only video out there where he actually shows you how to play the intro to Seventeen, note for note. PRICELESS!! And the whammy harmonic thing be does live...sadly, he doesn't explain anything, but he did touch on both techniques on his Black Magic instructional video from waaay back. Your video really puts it all together...incredible. This tapping run you see EVERYWHERE with Reb, in some form. The tapped solo but from Seventeen, also this technique. It takes a lot of repetition to get this souning as clean as you have it here. I hope to get there soon! Thanks!

Hey SD I gotta admit that half of what I learn from these lessons are in the regards to your approach. Your right hand is complexing relaxed. And when I can catch pieces of these lessons (much of this still escapes me), a lot of this is listening to your approach and attack on these pieces with your right hand. You are a teaching machine. Rock on! 🤘

Excellent Tutorial as usual . It always looked to me that Reb was using 2 tapped fingers for the ascending so thanks for breaking this technique for me.

Another great lesson David, thank you. Reb is definitely on of my Top 5 guitarist. I believe Reb uses his middle & ring fingers on his right hand. I've also heard Reb mentioned he uses the ring finger to pluck the next string down for his hammer ons in a video.

Great lesson! -and hammer ons from nowhere are one way to do it, But Reb plucks the first note of an ascending string with his right-hand finger. It's nearly impossible to separate the tapped note and the next string, but it works at higher speeds.

Dave, awesome coverage of one of my personal favorite guitar players. You mentioned "being a sucker for rhythm guitar" along with leads. Another axeman falling into that category is Mike Hall from Killer Dwarfs. Give a good hard listen to their Dirty Weapons CD/Album/Tape and see if you agree. Maybe you could do a little something on him from that offering..because there's NO ONE on YT (that I'VE found) covering him (shameful if ya ask me). Anyhow, see what you think..cheers!

Absolutely fantastic lesson! Huge Reb/Winger fan from seeing Madelaine on MTV. I refer to Reb's tapping style as "liquid tapping" as it flows so well off the fretboard. Would love to see you break down Nuno's string skipping tapping arpeggio solo in He-Man Woman Hater.

Note that reb plucks the low note with his 2nd finger instead of hammer on from nowhere . He describes this in his cutting loose. I like hammer on from nowhere
@nancyfox7822
@nancyfox7822 Жыл бұрын
You got the ring finger wrong. The reason he uses it is to pull off on the next string so he can avoid hammering on from nowhere because he doesn't like it. There's a video on KZbin from about 1991 where he explains the technique

He's not using the index Dave. Rent always keeps his pick tucked in his index finger. Just middle finger tapping with the aid of his ring finger to pluck next string (he's not into hammers from nowhere).

Thanks for giving some love to Reb! Everybody's kissing Nuno's butt nowadays. They're trying to make him the next Van Halen. I mean he's good, but overrated. They're drooling over his solo from their new song. It's just a bunch of muted notes.

Right? I’ve definitely noticed a string shift from the guitar works media to him in recent years .. heck even Rick beato is jumping on board . Nuno is unbelievable, but Reb in my opinion was the more melodic and memorable player to me atleast . All preference of course they both rock but man Reb doesn’t get much love great to see this !

@@mattmacarthur520 Indeed! Music is subjective, but I agree. When Winger came out, I didn't like the band as a hole, but I definitely noticed Reb. I was like, he's way too good for this band lol. He never got the recognition he deserves. If he hasn't already, he should put out a solo album. Another phenomenal player that never got much recognition is Vito Bratta. I wish he still played.

@@Krullmatic I’d highly encourage you to take a deeper dive into wingers catalogue ! Everyone and their uncle associated winger with seventeen and breavis and butthead , but they are truly a killer Rock band ! Their 1993 album pull is an absolute gem and I’d bet money that 99% of people wouldn’t think or realize that it’s winger because of how much heavier they got … such a great band and Reb Beach is a god … such a great player …. And Vito bratta in my opinion is second to none .. one of the best players to have ever lived and we only got what like 4 albums worth of his playing because of him leaving the music industry behind in 1992… melody and chops for days that smite 80s era was stacked with incredible guitar players
