I'd put a wooden top on the toolbox, then mount the vice to that. Put a thin filler piece in first to take up the void where the rolled steel lip of the box sticks up, then some 3/4 ply on top of that. You could leave a 1" or so overhand all the way around. This will give you a sturdier mount for your vice, and also a proper little workbench as well.
@richardsilva-spokane3436

I concur. Unfortunately, that thin metal top will eventually give way when you torque on the vise. 3/4” plywood across the whole top will provide a tough work surface to pound or cut. If the wood working surface extends an inch or so over the sides, you can also use other clamps when drilling, planing, sanding, or routing.

Personally, I would avoid using four swivel castor's. It may sound like a good idea for maneuverability but from personal experience once the chest gets bogged down with weight it becomes harder to turn and steer. Instead of fighting with two swivels, then there's four to contend with. Also, if the floor isn't completely level, it is more prone to drifting because it has no in line tracking. If the top is used as a work surface and a area for a vise, put a piece of plywood on the top. That tool box top is relatively light sheet metal that doesn't have any reinforcement. Just my two cents worth but hope the box serves you well.

Wally-world has magnetic trays and holders for the side of the cart. There's one for holding cans (WD-69, Liquid Wench, etc), one for holding skew drivers upright, and there is one that's just a simple tray to put extra Ikea parts into. Oh, there is also one that's a paper towel holder. The casters are a GREAT idea. I will be doing that as soon as I can empty my cabinet.

We kept some old fixed plastic wheels (2 with lock latches) from some forgotten thing for years out in the sheds. One day I got the idea to fix them to the bottom of a tall bookcase. That enables it to be pulled (gently) away from the wall every few months for dusting the skirtings. Take the books off, and it's a LOT easier to move elsewhere altogether. So, in 'custom' situations and/or for occasional necessary work that such items have the potential to make easier, the justification for 'sparing' cheap but usable stuff does kick in.

As a guy who lives out of his tool box here are some suggestions. 1. Great hack with casters 2. Put your most used tools top to bottom. Your back will thank you 3. The vice. I have one but we always put it in the opposite corner that you did. Always with a reinforcement plate beneath the vise so the sheet metal isn’t taking all the force. Opposite corner so it was out of the way most of the time when we didn’t need it 4. Organize your tools so Ray Charles could get you a tool. You never know when you need a passerby or the spouse to grab you a tool. Very easy to direct them to it instead of searching for something they have no idea what it looks like. It also help in keeping track if ya forgot/lost a tool. 5. My buddies welded up a small shelf under the box between the wheel. They kept extension cords under there. Hope this helps. I work in large industrial plants and you want your box as self sufficient as possible instead of walking a mile to the tool room.

A plate under the vice is needed. That sheet metal is thin and will deform
@rangersmith4652
@rangersmith4652 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. A sheet of 3/4 plywood cut to fit into the top lip and bolted down turns the whole surface into a usable worktop. Bolt the vice through that. Or use DJClarky78's similar idea. Reinforcing the thin steel applies to the upgraded casters as well. The idea is not original to me, but I added 1/2" thick, 3" wide boards running perpendicular to the the steel reinforcements between the caster plates. It's unbelievable how much rigidity and weight-carrying capacity that adds to these units. As is, those casters will splay when the cabinet gets really heavy.

When I worked in a factory, maintenance workers would get a 3/8 inch of steel plate and cut it down to fit top. If they had a vice, they would mark holes in each corner, cut off the bolt head and weld four bolts to the steel plate. They had a great work bench.

Three more tips: 1. Use a piece of 3/4 inch ply wood for the top for extra strength. 2. Line your drawers with indoor outdoor carpet. Helps protect your tool and keep them dry. Tools are expensive, might as well protect them. 3. Use wd40 to get glue residue off of surfaces. From tape to stickers. Works well. 4. Also Harbor Frieght sells small wretched caddys for your wrenches they fit nicely into your drawers and organize your wrenched, plus they are reasonably priced. Hope you like these tips. Just yesterday, as my 8 yr. old granddaughter helped me unpack and organize my new garage, heat gun to the rescue! We needed to remove permanent stickers the prior owners left on the peg board. After a lesson on the heat gun, we got a system going... she would give it 10 back and forth waves of the heat gun, then I'd slide in with a razor scraper. The stickers would curl and drop off as I ran it between the sticker and peg board, leaving the peg board clean. Perfect!

Amazon sells the wrench holders like you have. These hold 16 wrenches and the main thing is they have what they call a REVERSE type. Turn one with the big end to the front of your drawer and the other with the little/narrow end at the front of drawer but all wrenches face same direction. Red for standard and black for metric on all my socket and wrench holders.

Cool! Got a new Sears box and has same wheel issues, glad to learn the bolt pattern is “universal.” I’ll be replacing with the higher upgrade orange/red poly wheels, swivel and lock on one end, fixed on the other. True, difficult to handle when heavy if all wheels rotate. Added plywood top before putting vise on top, gives nicer surface to work on.

I always like to have a steel plate under and around the vice so there’s a place to do light hammering, So in this case I’d make up 2 plates at the same time, 1 to reinforce under the cab top. Though I do tend to over engineer things! :) Also, though I like the idea of 4 swivel castors, I’m thinking locking castors might be a good idea when you’re using the vice? Depends what you’re using the vice for I suppose.

I have seen so many vises mounted with the fixed jaw back from the edge of the bench or in your case the cabinet. That jaw should stick out over the edge of what ever the vise is mounted on so that something can be mounted vertically in the vise and clear the edge of what ever it is mounted on. In your case it's close and hard to tell if you allowed the clearance but is something that should always be considered.

There are a lot of great hacks for a lower tool box. Mine started life with my step father because of tip-overs at work they added two 1” sheets of ply wood to the bottom and 1 1” sheet inside the “pan” this made the casters and bottom very rigid the two bottom sheets are 4” bigger then the bottom of the tool box and the casters are set on the outermost edge like out riggers on a crane. Don’t use small casters go big go with wheel at least three time bigger and not rubber but polyurethane you will see and feel the difference. 2. If your going to set a vice on top sandwich the top in 1/2” plywood this will reduce and distribute the twisting force on to the whole top. 3. Aldi has just once a year a roll of black , brown , gray indoor out door carpet very cheap this is the best drawer liner and again reduces noise. 4. The cheap push handles are crap Lowe’s sell an stainless ADA grab rail about 12” long this is the best push handle you can use. 5. The ends of the tool box have pockets that help to make the ends rigid, by adding two pieces of flat aluminum across this pocket one at about 4” and another at 12” you can store flat stock, bar stock, round stock, sheet metal stock can be added to the other end. Last one I pick up some scrap retail steel wire hanging racks that hold 8 spray can each, one of these can be mounted to each end of the the upper tool box and one could be mounted to the ends of the lower box.

You are going to destroy that area of the toolbox as soon as you hit or muscle anything in the vice. I use a vice for so many tasks, that mounting it on a toolbox is a bad idea.

I just splurged on a Milwaukee 46" tool cart, then picked up the top cabinet when it came on sale....the casters are fantastic, so good move on your part.....the only thing I would have added on YOUR cart, and did this on one of my older carts, is to have added a 3/4" piece of plywood on top before mounting the vise, but its an easy add any time, if you have an tension on the vise moving around and bending the top, the wood will help to absorb some of that....big flats too...

I usually put the wrenches and their holders in one of the top drawers that aren’t as tall. That way you don’t waste a deep drawer on them and it is also easier to see the sizes and less of a reach when you have to keep going back for another one especially when you grab the wrong size.

The blow molded plastic straight into the drawer is something I've done when I didnt have as many tools. For a home gamer that doesnt get deep into tools that can work. Personally if say go get some drawer mat for most your drawers, cut to size and the tools will leave an indentation most the time. For sockets you can organize an entire drawer for about 30 or 40 bucks. If you buy your socket sets in each size and not as a massive set they usually will come with some sort of organizer. Many are the basic spring holders. I spent about 50 dollars in my socket drawer and I still have space. Theres also the big 300pc Kobalt set that comes with foam inserts to drop into the drawer. But I tossed those because they take up too much space. For reference my tool box in total probably weighs 2,000-3,000lbs. I have no issues rolling it. Sweep your floor and that no longer becomes an issue. A clean work space is a safe work space.

In the 1960's we took our roller-skates and attached them to boards in our Dad's garage and made sidewalk skateboards! Today, I suggest that you attach your tool cart wheels to the bottom of your shoes.

I like the socket hack for an at home tool set when ya don't have as much stuff. I will probably do that at home now too. In a professional setup you just have far too many sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers and pliers to not be much more efficient in organizing your drawers to fit more. Tool box widgets and Ernst brand organizers as well allow you to store far more and easily see what you're grabbing for. Again though... for economic use of space in a professional mechanics tool box there's a lot of none used space when doing that.

I used an extra set of the casters by bolting them to some 3/4" plywood cut in circles that hold my wife's largest potted plants. They get moved around seasonally so it saves me from much heavy lifting and a job I otherwise abhor.

As far as putting combination wrenches in the toolbox...put them in the shallower(in depth) drawers. save the bigger drawers for bigger tools.

A little foam double stick tape under the ratchet means they won't slide in the drawer. You could also use velcro.

Tip No 4 - LOCK YOUR DRAWERS before moving it.... I had mine get stuck on a small bit of grit on the floor while I was moving it and had all the drawers opened, the cart then went over as it was out of balance and I ended up with the two bottom drawers wrecked....these modern ball bearing sliders make it too easy for the drawers to open by them self.

On mine my father-n-law made a frame out of some angle iron to set the cart in. Then he put casters on the angle iron (welded). I would put your combination wrenches on the side of the cart. As for your vise your sheet metal is too thin on top. I would put a piece of plywood 3/4" on top, then mount your vise.

Save the casters for your next kitchen renovation. A base cabinet makes a good work table and since it will spend most of the time in a back corner of the garage or basement, the casters will keep the wood from absorbing moisture from the cement. You won't be moving it all the time, and the cheap casters will encourage you to keep the garage swept up. Happy wife, happy life!

That cheap store sells 18 inch magnetic strips you can screw onto the side of your tool cart. Then you just put a wrench on the magnet and ZAP it's stuck. 18" can hold lots of box wrenches.

I simply cut one by one strips of wood from my scrap pile of wood the length or depth of my tool drawers and using my radial arm saw cut grooves in them about every 1/2 to 3/8 5/16 of an inch and slotted my wrenches in that way I was able to get almost 60 ranches in a 40in drawer

Got a crafts man bottom chest for 16 dollars on clearance at sears. I snagged it quickly as soon as I saw it. It was in the closeout/scratch and dent area. It has a bay and only 2 drawers, but for 16 bucks I wasn't that picky. I put HF castors on it like you did. My dad gave me a older craftsman vice. It was racked so I took the drawers out of it and untwisted it and beat a few dents out. Ditched the garage bay style door to make it an open shelf. Mounted the castors. Then took some 2 x4 scraps I had laying around and ripped them on the table saw and made a butcher block top for it. Mounted the vice to the top and screwed the vice into wood. The only issue I have is its all an narrow and can fall over if you have lots weight in the drawers and the are open or you have something to have in the vice. The 2 fixed wheels would have helped with that, but overall since I used mostly what I had in the shop and took back some unused things to get the castors I have under 40 bucks in the whole deal. Works well. I keep most of my "mechanic" tools in it to use a service cart for the bikes and cars.

Nice vid. Good ideas. My comments: toolbox metal top too thin for vice support. Add plywood or metal top. Love the pups. You may want to get two locking casters as the toolbox will move when you dont want it. (Consider having the vice on top to keep projects from moving around.) I love the pups. Great thinking on pulling the hinge pin and using the case as a liner. Not all cases have that option but you discovered that option. Open closed end sockets are too small for the big drawer. Save that for bigger tools. Leave wrenches in holder and line the drawer with carpet scraps to keep down noise and movement. Did I mention that i love the pups?

Socket storage idea....Genius. 4 swivel wheels good for home not so good for going end to end on production floor at work. Vice idea not bad, if you can cut and weld make a side shelf attach vice to shelf,attach shelf to the side of cart so not to lose work area on top of tool cars

There's a reason there are two fixed casters and two swivel casters on a tool cart. Before anyone decides to put four swivel casters on their box you might want to understand why they will never sell them like that. Suppose that your tool box is completely loaded with tools. Now suppose you want to roll your cart across the shop to a different location. most garages have poured concrete floors that have a tapered slope near the garage doors. Your new swivel casters will accommodate gravity when you try to wheel it across a slope and gravity will win. Especially if your cart or box is fully loaded. Two fixed wheels allow better control when moving the box in the same way shopping carts have two swivels and two fixed casters.
