Oh my... so here is the real advice. (Mostly for Type 2 because I don't have experience dealing with Type 1): * Don't eat carbs (you probably want to get there gradually, though). No carbs = no sugar spike. Your body can adjust and produce all the carbs it needs from protein. If you need to eat carbs, eat complex ones, eat carbs as part of larger meal with protein and fats, prefer eating protein and fats first before carbs, eat carbs with some kind of acid like water with lemon juice, pickles, etc. * But, eat carbs from time to time (say for couple of days each month). If you don't, your body "forgets" how to deal with sugar and may "freak out" if you eat carbs with your meal. * Fix your stress. Stress causes cortisol which increases fasting glucose and causes constant release of insulin. Fixing stress goes a long way when it comes to improving insulin sensitivity. * Fast from time to time. If you can, reduce your eating window to 8h and don't eat anything for 16h each day. If you can, try to skip a day of eating once a week. This will have a lot of wonderful effects, but from your point of view it will teach your body to metabolise fats and will help you deal with low blood sugar. More importantly, it will reduce cravings for more carbs making it easier for you to stick to eating healthy. * Build muscle. Seriously. When your body releases insulin it signals your body to open the gates and suck sugar out of bloodstream. Where do you think most of the sugar goes? It goes to muscle... More muscle makes it easier for insulin to get rid of sugar. * Exercise after meals that had carbs. Go for a walk. When your muscles get exerted they will use sugars and will suck more sugar out of your bloodstream. If this happens right after a meal it will lower your blood sugar levels and blunt any spike.

Diet was the thing I put into place when I got a T1 diagnosis (LADA) at age 47. I don’t inject for breakfast or dinner as those meals are always low carb (coffee/meat/cheese) but at lunch if I have something a bit carby I’ll pop a little Fiasp into the mix if I have to (Just changed from Humalog to Fiasp because my job/lifestyle dictated this, Humalog SPC states you can inject at meal times but that’s not strictly true as I found with regular high spikes but Fiasp really does seem to work quickly enough to inject as you eat) I totally avoid bread, pasta/rice, pizza etc I tend to keep to meat protein and green veg which fills me up and doesn’t spike my bloods much.

Tom and fellow diabetics. I agree re spike control etc that is the absolute goal. I still have a lot to learn and still struggle with foods and eating discipline. My focus is on Low GI foods(Glycaemic index) for hunger control which means food and carbs that slowly convert to glucose stretched over a couple of hours so eg whole grain bread slow release vs white bread acts like icecream spike, some food combinations (In modest portions) never spike glucose up as a type 2 this has halved my insulin needs. Dennis Pollock and Toms experiance cuts to the heart of food. Monitor which foods power your day between meals with out spiking is my goal. Low GI Recipe books maybe a guide but as diabetics we still need to learn which carbs hate us.

Just one thing I do as a fat boy is i am hungry most of the time but low GI food solved that. Also I have learned to swap one bad food for another better food or drink so I dont mentally feel I am missing out. eg I used to come home from work and drink beer and eats chips (before diagnosed type 2) A pretty ingrained habit I used my SWAPPING tool to swap beer for ice cold tea or coffee no sugar or any low carb option your choice. Chips swapped for cut up vegtables . I still had my home coming habit but with with better health with out the cravings or feeling my life was ending I also find home made popping corn butter flavor only was a reasonably low Gi response if you need to break out from vegies. Commercial popping corn may contain an wanted additives like a salad is great but how much sugar in the dressings. Thanks Tom for sharing info.

@charleswilson45983 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree with what you are saying here and I am trying to learn to eat low carb or at least lower carb, but what baffles me is that in the '20s, '30s and '40s people ate their normal diet which included a lot of meat, fat and a lot of carbohydrates but diabetes didn't become an epidemic until more recent years, and obesity is a fairly recent problem. I was born in 1940, so my growing up years were in the '40s and '50s. In those years diabetes was a vague notion to me. I only knew one person who was diabetic, my Grandmother's sister who was quite large, beyond that I never heard much about diabetes. I knew a little about T1 diabetics who were children and were born that way but it was not a topic of conversation like it is nowadays. So how could our prior generations eat fairly high carb meals and we can't? I know there is a lot more processed food now and fast food joints are on every street corner and that has to be part of the problem. What is your thoughts?
@sw61182 жыл бұрын
Portion sizes were smaller. People didn’t snack between meals. People didn’t eat out multiple times per week (you don’t know what’s in the food). People didn’t have dessert daily. There were fewer additives in the food. Foods weren’t processed to be made hyper palatable. Foods were non-GMO-some are now selectively grown to be sweeter.
@tonikoopmeiners9180 Жыл бұрын
We have been getting genetically-modified foods for many decades, at least the 1950s, along with the business of butter and lard are not healthy but plant oil margarines are. And when you take the healthy saturated fats away from foods manufacturing added sugar to give some flavor. Lest we not forget the salt will give you a heart attack spiel. And all this had lead to pharmaceuticals to treat all the issues like cancer, heart disease, diabetes as the top three death strokes that are caused because our bodies got so imbalanced because of margarine, plant oils, low salt, high sugar, lean meats, that Drs have a heyday handing out prescriptions to bandaid problems that man caused. I was born in the 50s and grew up on a dairy farm. I saw all these changes and recognized the ridiculous things they were persuading people to believe and thought this isn’t good and it has proven to be a huge downfall for billions of people in the world.

This way I am not hitting my system with all those carbs all at once. That seems to work with most carb foods to give myself a steady supply of energy. In the cases where this method is not convenient I will hit it will some units of Humalog as a bolas. Start by cutting out all the fast acting carbs: potatoes, pasta, rice, bread, and FRUIT. Yes, fruit. Sorry! And crunchy things in bags. Then find a copy of Dr. Richard K. Bernstein's list of approved low-carb vegetables. Low calorie vegetables is where your carbs should come from. TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION: One # for carbs is "30 per day" which breaks down into 6 for breakfast, 12 for lunch and 12 for dinner. Dr. Bernstein explains it in his books. Applying all the information to your own diet is a real juggling match. Cutting out all the carbs you can is a start and you will discover more successful actions as you keep researching. So I have been trying to get an answer on what normal glucose levels look for unimpaired people. I understand the dawn phenomenon. When I check my glucose while in bed before hitting the floor, my levels are in the 90 to low 100 range as soon as I get up I'm at 120 to 140 range which while I'm still in a fasted state before eating. What does an unimpaired person experience? Do they spike and if so how high. When they say that normal fasting glucose levels in the morning should be in the 85-95 range and anything under 100 is desirable is that what im looking for or is the spike after I get up normal and do normal spike as high. What's normal?

Hello 👋🏾 everyone, buy the book titled. End your carb confusion. For pre diabetes and type 2 diabetes. This book suggests 3 phases. Phase 1 is 20 grams of carbs per day. Phase 2 is 50 grams of carbs per day. And phase 3 is 150 grams of carbs per day. You also get an approved foods list for each phase. For pre diabetes and type 2 diabetes this works like a charm. Couple it with exercise and you will easily lose weight and gradually even be able to eat fruit and potatoes on occasion. The only issue I take with Dennis is that he never talks about exercise. It’s low spike. Well as s type 2 or pre diabetic if you exercise regularly and eat between 20 and 150 grams of carbohydrates per day then this is a non issue. You don’t need to poke yourself 10 times a day if you keep total carb consumption between 20 and 150 grams per day. And if you are able to exercise as well.

How long do you wait after finishing dinner to go for the walk? And how long do you walk for? Like 30mins?

I’m carb counting, yeah I eat takeaways when I’m at work, I eat rice etc. With me I have recently become a type one from years of poor diabetes management. I was 44 kg that’s how much weight I lost, had a DKA ended up in hospital for 7 days. My A1C was 12.7 and now 7.6%. But is it okay to keep eating my carb meals? I’m carb counting as effective as I can. But I need to gain weight back

I've found it easier to cut most fat, and rather learn the insulin needed for my carbs.

Yes, it can be done. Ask for lettuce wraps for hamburgers. Water or unsweetened ice tea.

@@TypeOneTalks CGM.? I get strips but though get free prescriptions as over 65. I am so conscious about ordering them all the otime. I test 3a day but it doesn't give me a good enough picture. Where do I get CGM. Sounds like I need to move onto this. I haven't kicked my t2 even though my bmi is 20-21.i just lost more weight. But it is not shifting the blood sugar down.
