How to reduce that spikes: 1. Savory breakfast instead of sweet. 2. 1 tbsp vinegar in water before eating carbs. 3. Add veggie starter for lunch or dinner. 4. 10 minutes walk after having heavy carbs.

Remember, if you don't eat glucose (a.k.a. carbs) at all, you won't get blood glucose spikes. Consuming protein will elevate blood glucose, but it will do so at a significantly lower and slower rate/gram. Furthermore, your son's liver will produce exactly the right amount of glucose he needs at exactly the right time through a process called *_gluconeogenesis._* "Gluco" = glucose "neo" = new "genesis" = make or create So, "make new glucose" is what gluconeogenesis means. Your son's liver will take *_PROTEIN_* and convert it to glucose whenever his body needs it. So, while "dressing" carbs is good at reducing blood glucose spikes, skipping on the carbs altogether is that much *_better._* Look into Dr. Bernstein for videos and literature on Low/No carb eating for T1 diabetes.

So now I'm eating healthy carbs and using these hacks, and I've lost weight. I have the same high energy I had on keto, but I'm not as restricted. And I now enjoy, on the odd occasion, some fruit or even ice cream as a dessert. I'm a coach, and recommending these hacks to many of my clients experiencing many of these symptoms. I'm just about to turn 40, and I have more energy now than I did at 30, contributing to many changes I've made over the years, but the nutrition part has been massive, and that's been about a 3-year transition.

More context around spikes is required. Spikes are normal and the difference should be quantified between what is a normal spike and what is not a normal spike. There is a reason why A1C is the new standard because a single spike has no context. I see people trying to prevent even the smallest spike with an extremely high fat diet and their weight is going up and A1C has increased but they are convince that they are doing the right thing because they don't have any spikes. When I was wearing a CGM as a personal experiment the smallest rise in blood glucose was from eating cheesecake. What happened over time though was my A1C was slowly rising as I predicted. Where as I can eat fruit all day and spike my insulin (within healthy limits) and my A1C would decrease. This is why people doing HCLF have just as much success with reversing type 2 as those doing LCHF. Blood glucose is just the latest trend. I am not ignorant to the damage large spikes can do especially to the heart and brain long term, but A1C provides better context. For example, you could eat just one meal in a day with a moderate blood glucose rise and you could eat 6 meals a day with a much smaller blood glucose rises, but the average for the day above baseline for the 6 meals could be much worst. Keep your carbohydrates, fats and protein below what your body can utilise. Simple! Typically this is achieved easily enough by just limiting ultra processed foods. Life is too short to not have cheesecake or donuts so just make sure 80 to 90 of your diet is good whole foods. But some people have got an Anti-Spike formula to sell you. Lol!

I think most of us are here due to the spike back down and hypo symptoms? I am. I’ve been suffering for years until I just got a CGM.
@nicktheodorou34747 ай бұрын
@@bosmanRC Hey! Yes I understand that. CGM’s are a great tool for people managing issues with blood glucose, no doubt about it. I just feel we should make it clear that reducing blood glucose spikes does not mean that A1C will decrease and it doesn’t mean you will prevent pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes. It all comes down to average blood glucose over time. The large spikes that come with eating large amount of ultra-processed hyper-palatable foods are most certainly an issue and shouldn’t be ignored.

@@Hertz2laugh It is only a small percent of the population who respond that way though. Even most thin lean people will not have greatly elevated LDL on low carb diets, and usually lower than on a higher carb diet. The only way to find out is to test.

Hi Jessie I would like to know if my home made Kombucha after a meal helps reduce my glucose spike or does it increase it?
@Hertz2laugh7 ай бұрын
Increases it. Guaranteed. How much it increases depends on the ingredients you use. If you feed it with more or less sugar or molasses, or add more or less fruit, etc, you will get a higher or lower glucose spike. Plus, the carbs in the kombucha will be in liquid form which will produce much higher spike than the same amount of carbs taken as solid food. Please believe me when I tell you that it hurts my heart to tell you that information. My wife and I used to make our own kombucha too. 😢 But, you can always cut down the blood glusoce spike by doing exercise *_immediately_* after taking the kombucha. Even something as going on a 5 or 10 minute walk can significantly reduce the glucose spike. But don't wait. You need to do the walk or other exercise immediately after drinking the kombucha or whatever else has carbohydrates in it.

I kept having glucose spikes (headaches, sweats, …) and I told my doctors about them. Guess what they said? Limit carbs! 😒 I’m so glad my diet/health coach told me about you Jessie. I’m in week 3 of Glucose Goddess method and no more spikes. Merci infiniment! ❤

What's wrong with limiting carbs?
@Hertz2laugh7 ай бұрын
Nothing. Humans produce their own glucose from protein. The process is called gluconeogenesis. So, there is literally no downside to limiting carbs. Well, if you are addicted to carbs, there is a *_huge_* downside to limiting carbs. But that's a sensitive topic.
@shrugalic7 ай бұрын
Exactly. In my book that was actually good advice from this doctor; addressing the root cause rather than prescribing a pill. But yeah, very sensitive topic. Allow me to recommend watching Sugar, the bitter truth, by Robert Lustig. It's 14 years old, and basically a biochemistry lecture, but rather eye opening. It has 24 million views for a reason. In short: Sugar is very addictive. Going keto was the best thing I ever did. Maybe that's too far for some or even most, but reducing sugar in particular and carbs in general seems like a good idea for many people (with exceptions maybe for high intensity athletes)

Interesting what just showed up in my YT feed: Carbohydrate, the daily dose of poison - Dr. Gary Fettke. I'd describe it as a less sugar-coated (no pun intended) version of this video, worth watching in my opinion. In the same vein: Carbohydrate are a non-essential nutrient - Dr Paul Mason. They're published in a carnivore context, which I realize seems extreme to most people. It's an interesting topic to think about nonetheless. Dr. Mason makes a good point: continuous glucose monitors (such as the Freestyle Libre) are a good teaching tool. I myself was inspired to wear one after seeing the TED Talk "What is the best diet for humans?" By Eran Segal. Seeing is believing. :)

Nothing wrong with limiting carbs. It didn’t help me with the glucose spikes. Only when combined with the hacks was I able to prevent the glucose spikes and its effects. Please don’t take my comment as anti-keto. Just praising Jessie’s approach! It’s just what I needed and may not be for everyone. Just saying…

When they take fasting glucose they don't account for the number of hours you have fasted. I have always had normal fasting glucose and the first time I did a hba1c it was 54. Truly diabetic.. My spikes were clearly not happening first thing in the morning after a long fast of 14 hours or so but obviously after meals or in the middle of the night. The hba1c test has only become standard recently. I asked for it myself only 3 years ago - the doctor wouldn't have ordered it otherwise.

What about reactive hypoglycaemia? When I eat sugar I produce way too much insulin dropping my sugar into the very low 2’s requiring me to eat more sugar (plus carb/protein) to bring it back up and maintain it. Vicious circle. Any advice?

Same thing i am experiencing
@alejandratrigueros34537 ай бұрын
I have the same - that's the whole reason I started researching glucose and what happened to me. I've stopped having those hipoglucemia episodes if I follow her hacks- dpnt have it on an empty stomach. If I want a piece of cake ill have cashews or cherry tomatoes first, if I can I have vinegar dilluted in water before all of it, and move after, even if it's just sitting at my desk doing calf raises. If u can combine some of her tricks - no spoke and now awful downfall to sweating, trembling and getting light headed 🎉

I also experienced that myself. My solution was to increase protein a lot in my meals and having really big breakfast with high protein, nuts and complex carbs. So that my blood sugar doesn't go down. And try to avoid from sugar.

Yes, they do take blood from the hand if they can't get arm, but it's not the preferred spot due to nerves that are hard to miss so it can really hurt if blood is taken from hand.
