I worked in the film industry for many years and all types of filters were used from Harrison & Harrison, Tiffen, Vaseline, stockings etc. After much experimenting I settled on Lee Filters soft effects polyester filters in 100mm square frames which are numbered from 1-5. I mainly use the No.2 but sometimes use No.1 and even rarer No.3. Basically these filters are blowing the highlights whilst slightly softening blacks however the eye sharpness is retained as are facial details but it helps soften skin and makes retouching a bit easier. Many roads but similar results.

ND, CPL and IR are the only filters I use. Almost everything else can be created in editing, with the added advantage of maintaining the original shot. Once you use a mist filter, the shot always has the effect of the filter as a starting point.

This is off topic, but as someone who’s traveling quite a bit, do you ever edit your RAW files on an iPad? Would love to see your process if so. Thanks!

Hey mate, I've never used/owned an ipad, I edit mostly on the laptop when travelling and only a few things on the mobile! Something you'd still be interested in?
