I think my monstera really likes me... I haven't any space for him in my bright sunlight places, just in a medium sunlight spot. I also didn't give him a moss pole or a plank to grow on, just three chunky bamboo sticks... And even after all of this he just gave me a beautiful, huge fenestrated leaf!!! He's growing really slow, I know that's for the previously mentioned reasons, but he still gifted me a lot of areal roots and a brand new leaf. I adore him ❤️

I’m so glad you made a point about sunlight. I’ve noticed the same thing about rubber trees, in that every guide says “indirect light” which leads to the plant starving.

That's exactly it! In order to get more fenestrations/mature leaves, most people know that a chunky soil mix + giving your plant support goes a long way, but some plants can handle the extra light and speed up that process significantly. My regular Monstera deliciosa doesn't even have support other than the edge of its pot and isn't even planted in aroid mix but its sheer maturity (soon to be 3 years old) + the amount of light I'm giving it is quickly turning it into a beast.

Thought mine died as my kids and cats knocked it off the balcony 3 times. She was so busted and battered that I abandoned her under a small tree w lots of light. Came back three months later. I had 4 perfect new leaves. Cut her to pieces and I’m almost done with water prop. One new leaf, roots like crazy, and 4 new leaves growing. I’m psyched!

I put my monstera close to the window behind curtains. The sun is directly on it but it has a veil of protection. It’s been getting new leaves and some of the leaves grow with no fenestrations but then they turn out of nowhere. So cool ☺️

I found that when I had mine in a bedroom with a large south facing window, it thrived! I got my first hole fenestration but it got so large that I had to move it out of the room or I would not be able to fit it through the door to water it(love it) now, it has to live in a small 3 1/2 by 5 foot north facing window and give it additional artificial light just to feel better. No more hole fenestrations:( Do you suggest anyhting I can do to get it back to its happy self?

My 2 monstera have green growing like crazy since I got them, but no fenestrations. They got a lot of light, but not direct. I've moved them to the windowsill where they will be getting a lot of direct sunlight. I have no options to keep moving them closer slowly so I guess I will put them in the windowsill for a little bit every day, then move them back to where they were. Extending the time in the direct sun bit by bit. Fingers crossed they will take that without protest. Thank you for this video, it was very helpful

My monstera gives 3 leaves (one on each stem) a year... They're slowly getting bigger. I had one leaf with 2 fenestrations, but the next were just leaves without them again. It's in a south-east facing window, like, almost up against the window XD I just hope I am able to move soon, then I'll have some more space to put all of my plants. I got this monstera super cheap btw, in a box of 'throwaway plants' (plants that would be thrown out due to 'mistakes' or being in the shops too long)

With less light petioles get longer. Sounds like yours is getting an adequate amount of light. Keep up the good work eventually your plant will catch up in height. As long as the leaves are getting bigger you're good!

Love your videos. I have a monstera deliciosa outside and it gets full sun for about 5 hours a day. Yes you do need to do it slowly. Learn that the hard way One of my monsters grows outside all year round during the summer I put it out towards the full sun I do it slowly cuz during the winter it's close to the house underneath the patio it freezes where I live but it stays warm enough underneath the patio where it's still grows in winter during the summer I take it back out towards the full sun and I also do it very slowly It grows underneath the patio for about 5 months once the freez is over I start to take it out towards the Sun and it grows out there the rest of the year until it starts to get too cold at night and gets put back underneath the patio that plant is on a 4x4 Pole thanks for the great videos

No unfortunately not. Once the new bright green leaf darkens to the same colour as the rest of the plant it will not grow any larger or grow any fenestrations. Keep being patient! You'll get there eventually. 🌿

I purchased a medium sized monstera from a nursery and it only has 2 leaves that are fenestrated. It has a BUNCH of smaller new growth coming out of the base that are non-fenestrated. Will they become fenestrated over time or should I remove the "suckers" growing from the bottom?

They will not become more fenestrated over time. There are no such things as suckers. Leaves have one job, to produce energy for the plant. If you cut them off your plant will grow slower. If you want to cut them off for aesthetics, you can do that.

I don't know if I explained that part well. It isn't necessarily bad if the aerial roots burrow into your moss pole. I think I should have said aerial roots can be difficult to remove from a moss pole, which can make propagating a small plant frustrating.

Light exposure is measurable. So you can get your light from any source as long as it's high quality and has an adequate amount of time exposed.

Leaves have a job to produce energy for your plant. If you remove the plants ability to produce energy your plant will grow slower.

Hi, Lee, Me again. I'm happy to get new info on growing this plant. I'm also glad your newer videos have no music. You don't really need it, little distracting. After transplanting my Monstera which had 4 more growing with it, I put in a south face window last winter and it is just now growing it's first new leaf in 6 months. Took a long time but now it's making it's move. There is no sun coming in that window now just bright light. Hope that's going to be enough light.

I usually cut off the little leaves around the bottom. Those usually take away energy from the plant, making it grow smaller leaves. If the plant grows larger leaves, they will produce automatically good fenestrations, especially if the plants is getting bright (indirect) light. Direct sunlight is tricky though, because the intensity of the sun is bigger and more damaging the closer to the Ecuator the plant is located at. It’s not the same to have a monstera in direct sunlight in Florida, than it is in Canada were the UV index is much lower. In Florida, that plant is highly likely to get sunburned, regardless of carefully introducing it to a sunny spot. But the sun would be more forgiving the farther the plant is from the tropics. The sun is just a tricky element to plants and doesn’t always function the same, and it’s very dependent on location.

You're right about the sun exposure. You absolutely need to take into account your environment. My direct light is very difficult than your direct light. As for the leaves, any green leaf is photosynthesizing and providing energy for your plant. If you remove a leaf that is green you are removing the plants ability to make energy to grow. Smaller leaves provide a little bit of energy. It might not be a big deal to remove them, but it will not encourage new growth.

Love these plants! I received one for Christmas here in MN. Unfortunately, ALL the leaves were frost nipped (totally brown and dead!) when I got it. I let it sit in my chosen sunny window for 3 weeks and then cut the dead stuff off. Sadly only 1 leave survived the sub-zero temps. The stems are still green up to 4-10 inches above the soil. What are the odds of it coming back?

It’s almost creepy how KZbin directed me to your video- this was after another video you made titled something like- Stop doing this to your monstera... I bought two baby monsteras during the shutdown pandemic era so prob march-April 2020. They were small plants with a couple leaves each. No fenstrations obviously. Since then they have grown SOOO much. One more fenstrated than the other, and the only one did i take nod cuttings from and then give away. However they both seem quite leggy to me... and i didnt really know what i was supposeded to do to get that epic fuller plant. Ive been thinking of cutting off the more mature leaf plants from the nodes- rooting in water then bunching together in a new pot or in its mother plant pot. But i jsut wasn’t sure what exactly I SHOULD be doing. I didnt even google this yet... and alas- your videos presented itself. The info you gave in each of these videos at some point or another nailed exact questions i had in mind, as well as garnished with other great info. I guess i really just wanted to say, a thank you for the serendipitous meetcute. Isn’t it weird though how this happens with you tube recommendations and IG ADS.. Like as if they’re in your brain. The only plant stuff I KZbin for the last year has been outdoor gardening... so how they advertised your monstera videos is BEYOND ME Because i only thought it in my brain! Ok anyway. Kampai!

I have a follow-up question, at the beginning of these video "to go from this (and show mini-Monstera with no fenesrtation) to this" (showing Monstera Deliciosa with beautiful fenestrated leaves). Do those mini-Monsteras grow to be this big? Are this the same species? Or it was to just show the difference between the lack of fenestration and the presence of it? This video was a while ago but I believe those were both Monstera Deliciosa Large form. There is small form and large form. Generally large form will grow to a larger size faster.

Yes they did work really well. No need to wipe down or clean up after. The problem is you need to buy enough to make sure can apply to all the leaves of your plants. If they die off before they eat all your spider mites they could come back. You'll have to search to buy some depending on where you live. Each country, state / province, may have their own rules about shipping insects.

I rescued a monstera and it had very long stems and small leaves for ages. I helped it climb a moss pole and gave it enough light etc and it finally has beautiful big leaves with fenestrations. Eventually, I'd like to cut the top away from the bottom stemmy leaves, but will the new leaves be smaller after this?

I would say that all plants would rather have a consistent spot with appropriate lighting for their genus. I would also say Monstera Deliciosa are extremely hardy and don't care about being moved around, as long as it's not into extreme conditions.

Monsteras are commonplace in my country but they are usually grown outdoors. I moved to Philadelphia last year and 7 months ago I got a monstera from seed and nursed him through winter. My question is: On min 3:26 you say: " If you have a seedling, pls don't bother w a mosspole. Any stick is fine..." (I agree) "...Eventually, you'll want to propagate and cut and propagate the top part of your plant anyway..." Can you please tell me why? I'd love it if you'd elaborate. Ceilings and stem thickness. Let's assume you have amazing light and fast growth. Your plant will go from having a very thin stem to having stems so thick that they will snap. Imagine a bowling ball balancing on a tooth pick. Eventually you'll take your thickest part of the plant with a few of your best leaves and start that in a new pot. Now your plant is a mature plant in a new pot. Eventually your plant is going to hit your ceiling. I have the same philosophy on grow lights as all light. Gradually increase the light exposure and watch for signs of sun stress.

As a complete house plant noob (all plants for that matter) I might have misunderstood what indirect light meant. But my young monstera deliciosa was in my office which got dappled morning light through a frosted (for privacy) window. It was healthy - well didn't have signs of stress - but didn't really grow much (One new unfenestrated ~15 cm leaf in two months in spring/summer). I moved it to a bathroom on the other side of the house that gets LOTS of direct afternoon and evening light through a frosted window and it has loved it. The boy's on a rampage. Frosting = indirect? Or he's a beast and loves direct light? Either way, happy monstera!

2 months is not that long to see new growth. If lower leaves are turning yellow rapidly I would examine the soil and your watering frequency.

@@nehalpatil7551 once the leaves grow after a few weeks they never increase their size. Only new leaves will be larger if it has good light. New growth could take up to 6 months it really depends on how you are caring for it. Some things that could slow down growth are, improper watering, pests, insufficient light, lack of fertilization, the pot being root bound.

@@KillThisPlant okay..mine is having 4 leaves right now out of which one is not having any cuts on it..I usually water it when the soil is dry which is once a week since the weather is bit cold right now and placed it near the window..to get proper light..I have added a teaspoon of organic fertilizer to it..are these thing enough?

@@nehalpatil7551 yes. Make sure you don't over fertilize the plant, follow the instructions and use about 1/2 or 1/4 of the directions.

I am not the right person to ask. But check if your home country has any national board for window installations / safety certifications. If they do they may offer training programs. Otherwise you just have to apply for a company get hired and learn on the job.

Hello there! I recently got a huge Monstera cutting with thick aerial roots, some about 2.5 ft long. Can I just directly pot the whole cutting in soil? Please help lol Love from Nepal 🇳🇵

what a great cutting! I don't have good luck with putting cuttings directly into soil; though it is possible. I usually recommend putting your cutting into water, waiting until water roots grow. And then placing it into soil. I am working on a vid for how to propagate a monstera and it should be ready by Aug 21st. If you do put your cutting into water, long aerial roots are great. But if you need to trim them back a little so it can fit in a container that's ok too. Just make sure your tools are clean.

@@yazunakarmi3315 there is a possibility. There is also a possibility it may rot in soil as well if you don't have the right balance of water retention. Perlite or sphagnum moss propagation are options too. I generally recommend using whatever method you're most comfortable with. If this is your first ever propagation (of any plant) I would just go with water.

Oh my god! I’m so happy I found your channel. I had a mini monsters that I accidentally murdered because I thought it had root rot. The tips were turning black and yellow. I wish I would have found your channel because it would still be alive. I’d like to think I’m more of a novice now. It was such a beautiful plant though. It still haunts me. My monstera is growing bigger leaves, but shorter and shorter stems. Is it getting too much sun?

The more sun it gets the larger the leaves and the shorter the petioles. If you're happy with the leaf size, great. If you want longer petioles you'll likely have to give it less sun. This may result in anywhere from, not as big leaf size increases to having your next leafs be smaller. Experiment with it!
