It's a snap kick, it's a simple self defense kick that had no use in sparring matches
@tkdguy5494
@tkdguy5494 4 жыл бұрын
@@Nick-ys1uf The reason it's not used in sparring fights is because it's generally a kick used to hit below the waist, like the family jewels or in the case of this video, the quad. And kicks below the waste are illegal in TKD style sparring, therefore, it's most common targets aren't available. And while it's possible to kick to the face with it, the kick doesn't have very much range, and doesn't flow well with other kicks, so it's not very practical in that setting. For self-defense purposes though, it's very practical.

Great stuff. Fancy kicks in the street are high risk moves. These basic kicks are effective, and they lower that risk.

Nah trust me if you throw out a tornado kick in a street fight nobody wants to fuck with you, even if it doesnt land or you didnt intend for it to land. Most people have no idea how to fight so intimidation is very effective, and if they still have beef after you show off some moves they're usually more careful and reserved which you can take advantage of with some kicks since they'll be at the perfect distamce for them.

From all the kicks that GNT shown, the most difficult even for a long time TKD practitionrt is definitely the side kick. It takes a lot of training, conditioning. The hardest part of this technique is how to make it go straight in horizontal line to the target and get our footsword to properly landed properly. It's really a tough technique to master, but once you can get it into perfection, this will be a valuable weapon. It's a powerful lineal kick that comes out from side body position toward the opponent, which is the reason why this kick is called 'side kick'.
@nightmonkey2779
@nightmonkey2779 7 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend using kicks unless you're proficient with them, and even at that throw them with bad intentions. Throwing half assed kicks is a bad idea, you want to make sure the opponent is neutralized by the kick even if they block it.

I generally agree, but there are a lot of great little foot tricks like a short check kick that can screw up rhythm and set up a great combo with the hands. I wouldn't recommend any difficult kicks, but a simple check kick to the leg can work wonders.

The yeop chagi ( side kick ) is for me the best way to avoid a fight, if you're trained to land it with power/precision, the guy you hit will most of the time fall of, and by seeing you do that they're like "this guy knows what he's doing". Out of 5 fights where I started with this kick, all of them where stopped just after
@JoeyCentral

There isnt much power in the side kick though. The purpose of it is to counter a rushing opponent. If I am expecting a side kick, then it's easy to counter since I know what plane of motion it's traveling in.

I love to hear of people's experience on the street, so thanks for sharing that. I've had a number of street altercations, and I say use what works for you and what the situation calls for. Some of these TKD guys can throw a powerful kick about as fast as I can flick a jab. Just make certain that you're kicking in such a way that if you do miss, you'll come down in a good position to follow up with some more strikes or a takedown, or at least be able to defend yourself. Same with punching, etc. Use what you know and what you're comfortable with.

I had same reaction when I’ve used Tae Kwon Do in self defense many years ago. It’s shocking how quick a well executed front kick or side kick to the ribs will end a altercation, especially if they don’t expect it. The side kick has that knock back or down effect but the front kick has less risk.

But some make sense in very few situations. is a twin foot side pierce kick to 1 target worth the risk? 99% or more of the time I'd say no. But yes, traditional Taekwon-do has a lot of excellent self defense application. Also, someone who is stupid enough to start a fight, is showing a lack of discipline not common among martial artists. So it's likely that they are a bone head.
@soniaiboyako4023
@soniaiboyako4023 2 жыл бұрын
@@yamahamer89 i know you weren't disagreeing but in a self defense situation almost everything poses a huge risk of counter which in worst case scenario would lead to death, this logic would render everything "not worth the risk". most of the time when ppl talk about self defense they assume they'd be stronger and faster than their attacker and forget how quick these things can go (and go wrong). now if you are stronger and faster than your attacker then just about any well executed kick would be worth the risk ig. idk why i wrote all this i think i just don't understand the obsession with street fight scenarios
@yamahamer89
@yamahamer89 2 жыл бұрын
@@soniaiboyako4023 I think it's natural to fantasize about self defense situations. Maybe It's a survival instinct. And you're right everything is dangerous. Like if you shoot someone in self defense no matter how justified you are, there's a chance that your whole life could still be ruined.
@soniaiboyako4023
@soniaiboyako4023 2 жыл бұрын
@@yamahamer89 yeah i think it's natural to think about risks or anticipate danger to an extent but ppl seem to *want* to be in danger so they get to see if they can hurt someone? i also don't think it's natural nor healthy to obsess over it or gauge the legitimacy of a sport by whether or not you think it'd be efficient in an imagined scenario you have all the control over (since every self defense situation factors in so many different things, many out of your control)

Great video. Those kicks are simple and seem very effective for real life self defense. I once received a hard roundhouse kick to the thigh with a small padded kicking shield and the kick was brutal even with the shield. I can only imagine one powerful roundhouse kick to the thigh or knee can potentially be game over if it's quick and powerful enough. GNT has awesome fast and powerful kicks. I also heard an interesting theory on high kicks for self defense. Simply put, high risk but also high reward if pulled off (the reward being high chance of a total knockout). Definitely have to be fast, powerful and quite flexible to do something like that cold but it did get me thinking that it could be a viable option if you train hard with high kicks and flexibility and willing to take the risk. I really like these collaboration videos and learn a lot from the experiences of Shane and the guests. Thanks to fightTIPS and GNT.

is it just me or are low kicks not getting enough love on this channel? it is my single go to kick in any sort of fight and the few who actually got back up were in no state to pursue me. In training against practice knives i also found kicking the leg makes a lot less vulnerable to having a blade sticking out of calf or stomache since you can lean back. Iam still training this kick every day and i would love more tips and tweaks on the lowkick.

Kicks are slower than punches to begin with, and most people simply aren't quick enough with them period, which makes them easy to block. Even Bruce Lee used to say all kicks must be set up with punches, and his kicks were faster than naruto's tits.

dayrenist in most situations as a lot of fights start at close range. The first low kick I showed was to set up the hands so it works. Also at range, the legs are longer so it make more sense to cover you on the way in than to just step in or wait for them to enter range. I have sparred many people that couldn't get past my legs. I'm not saying they are the be all and end all but to dismiss them completely would not be a wise choice. Try to be more open minded and work on the kicking side to prove yourself wrong 👍🏻 All tools are useful if you know how to use them. Good luck with your training 😁

My original intention was not to dismiss kicks btw, I was saying that a lot of people think kicks are ineffective in fights, and my opinion is that it's because they need to be polished to a certain level before they are usable (like yours)

dayrenist but the same goes with punches, all your techniques need to be polished

GingerNinjaTrickster also kicks are usually more difficult to react to as legs are below the straight eye sight range.

Definitely need to keep getting myself in a better physical state before I can do any of this. My kicks would be about as fast as a tortoise walking right now. Great vid.

There is alot of power in those kicks TKD was my first MA and it teaches you to use your legs very well. My brother who also trains in TKD kicked a guy in the head with a inside crecent kick knocking him down.

Hey Shane, I was wondering if you could make a video about common fighting injuries such as a busted lip. Then show how to deal with them the best way. Thanks

Been doing karate and TKD since 1991 and have been close to fighting in the street but was always able to diffuse the situation. I am real paranoid about having my kicks caught, so I think I'd rely on a slip then body hook counter, like Tyson/D'Amato
