Great info. Without even trying the tests I know that at least 3 of them will be painful. My symptoms fit Sacroiliac Joint problems almost perfectly. The most telling part of the description is that it's entirely on one side. Something as innocuous as rolling to one side without the correct technique can set off an intense spasm. Hopefully my upcoming MRI will pinpoint the problem.

One of the quick screenings for SIJ we were instructed is to have the patient supine with the knees bent to approximately 45 degrees. Then, we apply pressure at the ASIS for about 5 seconds with over pressure at the end. Positive sign is if their pain is reproduced. Our instructors teach from the IAOM.

Hi Bob and Brad, you helped me get through groin injury, now I have an SI injury. I injured it originally in 2006 after a workout, and it reared it's ugly head 10 years later while I was cleaning the house for Thanksgiving. I don't know exactly what I did to make it slip out of place, I might have twisted or lifted the wrong way. I am an ex-dancer so I have hypermobility issues. I amtrying to stay positive. I am seeing an orthopedic doctor on Monday, I am hoping she sends me to PT because the thought of having an injection scares me. I also have to call my insurance company and see if I'm even covered for another injury. What stinks is I can't go right to see a physical therapist I have to have a prescription, that's Massachusetts. I'm not sure in other states if that's the case. Anyway, the two of you are such an inspiration. Thank you

Thank you so much for this video. I believe I have a problem with my SI joint. I am a student, so I spend much of my day sitting. I experience low-back or hip stiffness when I stand after sitting for a time, but no pain during any activity. When I sleep my discomfort ranges from itchy hip and leg muscles that beg to be stretched, to low back pain that sometimes radiates into the glute and hamstring. My left leg is sometimes shorter than my right (I stretch the quad, or massage it vigorously and my legs even out). I had complete relief from my back pain when I spent a month sleeping on a very hard bed and not doing yoga (vacation). I have started a treadmill routine walking at an incline and now my sleeping pain is back. I am very flexible and I enjoy all sports, so this pain is really affecting my quality of life. I have been to a PT and they found weakness in my T5 area so they focused on that. I know that the spine is a network so I see how strengthening that area would have an impact on my low back but I need to be able to exercise and sleep without drugs. I know this is ridiculously long and I appreciate your reading this.

Best way to ease/overcome that SI pain... strengthen your core. Get those muscles stronger so that the SI joint is enveloped in tight muscles and the SI joint moves less. I had 3 babies back to back and my muscles were very weak afterwards. So when I did physical therapy and got those muscles strong enough to support that SI joint properly, that pain completely went away!

I had two spinal fusion surgeries. The second was because the first failed and the hardware became lose. I was just starting my health career when this happened so I was fresh to the idea of back surgery. Looking back now which was 7 years ago my pain management doctor and my surgeon NEVER even mentioned that my SI joints could be bad. Despite me telling them that a lot of my pain was not in the center of my spine but rather down my leg, in my butt, and off to the side of the lower back. Of course I did not know anything nor heard about SI joint surgery. I just knew about the joint from anatomy. Seven years later, 30+ injections, years of PT, 2 spine surgeries, "I" final spoke up and said Im going to get my SI looked at. In my area only 4 surgeons do SI surgery. And I live in a hospitals city of big time hospitals. So I went to one doctor and he suggesting doing an SI injection to see if that was my pain. I did it three weeks ago. They did a MAC so I was asleep. Don't remember anything. It was wonderful. The next day my pain went down by 50%. No joke. I knew that it was my SI joint. Today I saw the surgeon and he said I could wait it out with another injection that only puts a band aid on it. I said nope....I want surgery. In 7 years with several surgeries on my body, I said I WANT this surgery. I am scheduled in three weeks to have my left fused followed by my right when I am healed. My point behind all of this. If your having low back pain make sure you get your pain management to consider SI joints and your surgeon to consider it. Do not let them talk you into fusing your lumbar without considering this and having testing done like me. Looking back I really did not need a lumbar fusion. I have been through hell every since. ALWAYS get a second opinion if you have decent insurance. Medicine is a practice. Every doc has a different opinion. What works for one person may not work for you. Everybody is different. And push your doctor to review your MRI or CT scan. With all do respect to radiologist, they don't see inside the body. They are trained to look at imaging, period. I work with docs in the OR. I can tell you many times when a doc said, "that was not on the MRI." Radiologist miss things all the time. Not because they are not looking. They just don't apply what they know to what the body looks like cut open. The radiologist completely missed my unfused spinal fusion and lose hardware. As soon as my surgeon saw the MRI he knew it did not fuse and the screws were lose. Get your doctor to look at the MRI, not read the dictation from the radiologist. Some docs go right off the radiologist report and don't look at the MRI.

That's interesting. I used to have recurrent "hip pain" for about 10 years and went to a GP at my university who couldn't diagnose it, but came up with Piriformis Syndrome. He sent me to physical therapy where the physical therapist basically mocked me for having the diagnosis (I had never heard of Piriformis Syndrome before the GP mentioned it). The PT diagnosed me with a strained SI joint (which I believe to have been correct). Physical therapy never really helped the situation. It wasn't until I changed the way I slept that the pain stopped coming back. Now the interesting part, is that when the pain would flare up (which happened about once a month for about a week at a time), it was extraordinarily painful to walk but walking up stairs was actually quite a bit less painful than flat surface walking.

But when my osteopath said, ‘lots of people are overweight but don’t have this pain’, I was completely lost. So at the end of Dec 2019 I went in for a fusion/decompression at L4-L5 for disc degenerative disease along with bulging discs and severe spinal stenosis. All these tests were promoted when I woke up with my left foot “paralyzed”. My spine and pain Dr. determined it was foot drop and I started wearing a brace for it. I went through all the injections and no relief at all so he finally sent me to a surgeon and I had surgery. When it was finally time to start PT afterwards I was coming up on my final appt when pain hit so bad that not only my physical therapist stopped my session had 2 other therapist come over and between the 3 of them had me do a few classes”tests” and these were among them, without diagnosing me they told me I needed to see my spine dr immediately and so I did and that was this past April, it was mainly my left side but has moved into the right side as well. So the 1st thing my dr did was to send me for an mri of the lumbar spine (again) because the x-ray had shown hardware in pls e like it should be. Needless to say the 45 min mri was a nightmare! It was bad enough that I hard an extremely hard time sitting up, forget turning over in bed or any bending whatsoever. So because of the hardware in my back it obscured anything the mri may have shown about the L5-S1 area so my dr proceeded with injections into that area and by far the most painful injections so far. But no relief from that at all I actually ended up being sent to the ER twice. Now here in August I have revisited my surgeon who knew exactly what it was and showed it to us(my husband and I) on the MRI. So he sent me back to my spine dr for a diagnostic injection into the SI joints but he is positive with the level of pain and the loss of movement and the severe impairment that I will have no relief from these injections(I am to call him 2 hours after to give report on percentage of relief) so today I had an mri on the pelvic area, the SI area and my hips. I cannot explain the level of pain I was in for 45 min laying flat on my back not to mention I’m claustrophobic but had already take meds for that, but I can tell you 2 of my 3 children were born natural with no kind of pain meds at all and I would rather go through that for 9-14 hours than do this again. So now Friday I go for the SI injections and I am terrified of the pain that is going to bring.(I hate needles) and both my spine dr and my surgeon are positive I will have to go in for a fusion of the SI joints. Why so much pain just to get relief? All of the tests including the Patrick and Faber test were positive! I can’t do this anymore.

I'm dealing with back pain that feels almost like a herniated disk towards the right side near my hip. I cannot afford healthcare , I am 17 and my parents are neglecting that I have an issue. The leg raise doesn't hurt, however, the slumped sitting leg raise is gruesome. I will continue to look through the videos to maybe see what it could be, but any feedback would mean the world to me. Thanks guys.

Please teach the VA about this. But first advise them what a S-I joint is first. They diagnosed it in 2013, but yet to receive any treatment. Thanks.

awesome, i will show this to my VA doctor, because they seem to know very little about the si joint. i've been suffering this for 20 yrs this month, and nothing has been done at all on my si joint. the VA only say my L5- S1 joint shows no sign of disturbing the sciatic nerve. it's because its my si joint silly VA. yet now, i'm in a wheelchair suffering from the exact same cronic pain when i entered the VA, 19 years ago.

Hi Gentlemen. Excellent presentation there. I want to share my problem. Maybe you can give me some advice. had an injury 3 years ago in the gym. I was doing the fixed bar lift with heavy plates. I think the place where i feel the pain is called the SI area. Its the lowest part of the backbone. An inch down in the hips area. I occasionally have neck and headaches and im sure its because of that injury in the gym. Whenever i sit on hard surfaces i get this pain. I feel there's an inflammation. It goes away if i get a massage or take some painkiller. But its recurring.i feel pain in the SI area as well and have headache at same time. Its really annoying. Would it be possible to give me some advice.

Hello again. I've been sending you lately on a couple of videos trying to diagnose my pain and you have been replying to all my messages and I really really appreciate that. I wish you were in the same country so I could pay you guys a visit, you are just awesome with all your videos. So I'm confused with my different doctors diagnosis between herniated disc and Facet joint syndrome, and now I see this video and really start to think that this is exactly what is causing my pain ! I did the first leg crossing move, and a strong pop came out of that location !!! Does that prove anything ?

My neurologist offered a procedure SI stabilizing. My Chiropractor didn't think it a good idea. I'm waiting to see if my chiropractor can help me.

Fwiw i had SI joint joint pain on the right. I foolishly went to a chiropractor and he put pressure on the iliac crest on the right (presumably he thought the pelvis was too far back). The next day I had horrible pain on the LEFT side radiating from the groin right round to the buttock. And all the way down to my foot. Really nasty. It is easing off a bit but I will be needing a lot of PT to put this right and stabilise the joint. I am 6'5 and though I weigh about 190 lbs, there is obviously a lot of force going through the joint which now feels off on BOTH sides!

Now I'm more confused than ever.... My pain is in my foot and calf, sometimes in the groin areas.... The injection helped alot... They want to do si surgery... Now I'm not sure what to do... I've been in agony for years.... Nothing helps

I find crossing my legs as in exercise 1 actually relieves my SI pain. Mine started (and this is dumb) by unknowingly sleeping one night with my leg hanging out of the bed and on the floor - we had got a new duvet that was too warm for me. Woke up in the morning in terrific pain and its been around ever since.

I believe I aggravated my SI today while trying to open a large plastic jar that had the cap stuck. I had to really turn it in both directions with a lot of strength and when finished, I was in pain. Hurts to sit and walk, and when I press on my sacrum, I can feel the pain. Haven’t been to a chiropractor but gonna have to asap.
@Autumn_Forest_8 жыл бұрын
Weird question... What if you feel like you need someone to put pressure hard on your sacrum (while you're lying on your belly)? I discovered this because I felt a lot of relief when my 16-lb cat sat on my sacrum when I was lying on my belly reading. I have asked my BF to push there a couple of times, and the feeling of relief is gone as soon as the pressure lets up.

Thank you! Guess what - Your SI joint exercises are helping me greatly, after only 4-5 days. It was sore (I guess from the exercises) the first couple of days, when I wrote my comment. :)

Very effective relief putting pressure on the sacrum. I get my lil sis she's 90 lbs to stand barefoot on my pelvis while on my belly when it feels like a migraine in the pelvis and it goes away instantly. Also, when I have no help I put a firm foam roller under the si joint while laying on my back using my own body weight to relieve the pressure and raise my legs to get up and down to adjust the pressure/relief.

Very helpful (and quite entertaining) video. I get pain in all 3 tests, my pain started when I bent down to pick something heavy up at work and I instantly felt a painful electrical sensation that hasn't gone away... Since this happened I have a constant sensation that the nerves in that area are knotted up and feel if someone pulled or yanked on my leg hard enough it would release that nerve and I would feel relief, instead I just live with the irritation. Been in pain for years now. I also have numbness on the outside of my thigh that stops at the knee? Pain goes from groin to hip, lower back, and leg. I've also noticed if I sleep completely flat on my back, when I wake up and move in any direction I get really sharp electrical shock pain on the outside of my thigh, stopping at my knee as well???
@katrinawilliams4327 жыл бұрын
J.T. Marcoux Wow! You just described how I feel and if someone pulled my leg really hard I too feel like that would work. Things would just snap back into place.

I had a cauda equina repair in 2015. Three weeks ago I developed pain which is burning and causes significant aching down to my posterior left thigh. At this point, steroids po, are my only relief, however, being a diabetic not my drug of choice. I can take my finger and point consistently to this burning origin. I've is of minimal help . I'm pretty sure I have SI problem . The pain is so intense, I'm not sure why more aggressive tx isn't being sought. Thanks for the informative video

I hurt to walk in that exact same area. I swell on my left side. I had one spine surgery two years ago on my lumbar. I had two disks that were calcified together and facing down my spine. I almost went paralyzed. University of Maryland saved my life. I have had this extreme pain in all the areas you're saying. on both sides but my left is worse and it swells out with my thighs feeling hot. I can't function good at all. I hurt so bad to even walk or bend. I am so upset to think that I can't be a proper mom of three boys. I want to play n run with them. I hurt by standing , walking, sitting and in my sleep that wakes me. My legs give out on me too. I get so much non stop pain. I need help on this. I hurt so bad I cry. I can't even walk around for 15 to 20 minutes without getting a ridding cart. I hurt going into the frozen sections.

I think my spine surgeon has missed the possibility I may have S,I, joint issues following a motorcycle accident that left me with tranverse fractures in my sacrum. Pain is worse on the right side where my buttock hit the car/ground[I was knocked out]and travels the outside of the thigh into the knee. Sitting and walking make the pain worse. It even wakes me from sleep if I lie on my right side for any length of time. Thanks Guys.

Boxers use their waste a lot especially to produce force when striking a heavy bag. Which causes not only impact in the shoulders and surrounding areas, but also the waist. Would they have issues with their SI? Or would it be both SI and sciatic nerve? I've suffered from a sharp pain in my leg. Once my body cooled down I couldn't walk when I warmed up I was able to move around with pain in my lower back. Stretches did make me feel better, but never fully took the pain away. Also once in a while I'd get a tremendous pain in my lower back that would make my legs buckle & I'd have to kneel a bit until it went away....thanx I'll be waiting reply.

Hi guys! Great video! You guys are wonderful. I have a question: I've been suffering from lower back pain since 1999. X-rays show some mild degenerative change with endplate sclerosis and partial sacralization of the L5 segment. Could this partial fusion of the L5 and sacrum be causing my pain? I can't seem to find much information on sacralization and S.I. pain. Now I'm thinking it's S.I. pain I've been suffering from all these years! The pain is on my lower left side (with no sciatica pain) Thanks!- Elisabeth

It has been two months and the pain was low level, and not everyday. I could walk with zero pain. Stretching would help tremendously. Yesterday I was fine, I was helping a neighbor, something pulled right where the SI joint is. It’s not sciatica or the hip joint. I’ve had sciatica and I can walk with no pain. now I’m in bed with extra severe pain. It went from not so bad to the worse pain it could cause. Sitting, standing, cause level 8 pain but shoots to 10. This is absolutely horrible. Laying down the pain is the same, and shoots to ten with the slightest movement. Question: will this get better or does require intervention of some kind ?

What if the ONLY pain relief I get is from sitting/laying down? Prolonged standing or walking gives me intense pain from my left buttock down the back of my black but not past my knee. I took a nasty fall down my back deck and fell on my left side. It's been nearly done weeks. I can't walk or stand more than a few minutes without this pain. And I've been going to a chiropractor and he thinks it is the SI joint. I'm getting an MRI on Sunday.

4 years ago I had femur fractures from osteoporosis I never fell either I had rods and screws put in both legs they were done with in a week a part. I did therapy and I was getting around ok. Then my back pain was getting worse. I had back problems after having kids and I have neurofibromatosis and have tumors in my spine. My back pain got worse over time it was so bad I couldn’t do therapy. I got steroid injections that never helped and tried the trial stimulator and that did not help at all. I went and got the trial pain pump that took my pain away more then all the other things I tried. I just recently got the pump implanted and praying I get my life back enough to enjoy my grandkids I have not been able to walk for quite some time.

2 years ago I took this test and SI seemed to be the cause. I still have pain but the tests now show SI is not the cause. After trying different things, pretty much everything suggested, I still have pain. My life has changed because of it. I have learned to alter my activities to tolerate it.
@mzh-vw5ho3 жыл бұрын
@@shan08830 Are you asking about the "tests" that these KZbin Chiropracters show? I did them all. Are you taking about tests with physicians? I saw several, had various X-rays and examinations. I was told the pain came from bulging disks. I was offered back surgery several times which I turned down. I know too many people who have had it and after surgery are still suffering with pain. No improvement. I'll never go for that. I have tried physical therapy, no improvement. I'd like to try acupuncture and inversion therapy. Yoga and walking helped me the most.

Hey guys! Great video. My pt believes my s.i joint is causing my pain (sciatica) in my ankle (lower leg)left buttock, and upper thigh just below the pelvic bone. On the other hand, my orthopedic believes my L5S1 disc herniation is causing my pain. I have received two nerve block injections for the l5S1 without much success. Do you recommend receiving a si joint injection as a way of process of elimination? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!
