Maybe didn't understand the risks . When I was going to South Australia and New South Wales I was told by the people we knew there uch sharks are there but they don't bother you and stay out your way . Then I went home and checked the shark watch thing on FB and saw the spot I was snorkeling in Adelaide is known for white pointers even saw a sealion swimming parallel to the beach about 15m out and thought nothing of it until I got home and realised they only swim that close to people when there's predators about .

Idk the ocean is a beautiful place and it’s not worth it to me to just never go in it because there’s a tiny chance a shark will attack me. I’ll take my chances, though if there are areas with lots of reports of attacks I’ll obviously avoid that area because there’s most likely some human activity attracting them there (fishing, etc). But being around sharks doesn’t mean you’re for sure gonna be attacked

In 1979 I was diving in 90 ft north of Port of Palm Beach,on the Shark killer 3..it was about 40ft visibility, and I was partnered up with John Israel..All of a sudden John bangs me on the shoulder.I turn, and there is a female tiger shark,20 feet long,if she is 1 inch. Her coffee saucer sized black eye was following me as I melted into the coral reef, realizing how much I looked like a seal ,in my wet suit. The scariest minute of my life,as she turned to follow the other divers, now out of sight. There are huge animals out there..dont think there aren't.

It's a heart wrenching story to have that happen to your daughter right in front of you and to hear her screaming for help, the sh*theads from the tour group were absolutely NO help at all. Port St John's second Beach is named the world's deadliest Beach due to the amount of "fatal" great white attacks. It's a very beautiful beach and popular tourist spot, but when that shark flag is up at certain times of the year, you best stay out of that water. I always used to think Hout Bay, or Gansbai AKA Dungeons surf spot were the most dangerous beaches in South Africa, or the beaches in false Bay because of their close proximity to shark alley. But no, Port St John's Second Beach on the Eastern Cape has earned its title.

The poor Brits were at a severe disadvantage. They fought their shark before Jaws had been made. They didn't know the shark was a relentless killer, perfectly happy exploding as long as it took as many people to hell with it. That's why the official SOP is to put the explosives in the shark's mouth and detonate it with a rifle from a safe distance while saying, "Smile you son of a bitch." Those poor guys never had a chance.

From someone in the know, always double check to make sure tours are even legal operations, let alone insured/registered and have contingency plans. A VAST majority of water tours around the Bahamas and the Caribbean are illegal and ran like a shit show. And owned by illegal expats who can just leave at any time and disappear. Which happens a ton. That Bahamas story made me think of all the illegal operations I've seen in that part of the world. My ex had a longtime boyfriend who ran one of those illegal diving operations and they lost a diver. And when SHTF he ran. I LOVE it in those islands, but that place is a different world. As far as the tiger shark attack to the 21 year old girl in the Bahamas i first heard they were Silkies. I grew up in the virgin islands and they can get ferocious when in a frenzy. As to the lack of medical supplies on the tour boat no surprise. Most of the crew on the tour boats are locals with second hand training if any, that by the way don't go in the water during those tours. 🤔 As to the rest of the crew I mean it is ur average stoner, treehugger dive Instructors... "don't mess with the shark the shark won't mess with u" type attitudes. Not all tour guides but at least a third I'd say. No stretchers on board to transport a casualty, no tourniquets, nada!

Found you by accident, sent it to several friends. I've been fascinated and at the same time afraid of sharks from an early age. A boy was attacked In Sarasota Co Florida in 1958, heard it on the radio where we were staying in Englewood Florida on the beach. The boy probably 8 or 9 was in knee deep water when a tiger shark (always figured a bull shark) grabbed him. His older brother, old enough to drive pulled his brother and the shark on shore. Then got an M1 CARBINE from his pick up and shot the shark. That's all I recall as a kid his age at that time. I did a lot if research and finally found the incident recorded he lost his leg, and the other brother had bites on his hands. The shark a 7 foot tiger in very shallow water. Interesting enough my brother in college met a guy with one leg diving in the University pool and could have been on their dive team, part of the school athletics. My brother thought for years the attack on thus guy happened in Miami. (He may have lived there) but was unable to find any record. Well that kid we heard about on the radio in 1958 was in fact this young man. My brother knew his name and it was the same I found in my research. What are the chances huh.

@@SharksHappen I completely agree, they seem to be incredibly intelligent. I often wonder while hearing your stories if there is some kind of electrical signature we give off sometimes that entices them to either attack, become very curious about the person or something like that. I heard they have an organ known as ampullae or something. Do you think this might be not a case of mistaken identity but rather an electrical signature close to usual prey they are hunting? Is it also possible that when we ourselves are sick we may also produce a signal that may entice a shark to become curious, attack or predate? I know of countless predators who are able to select weak members of a herd or group, I wonder if the sharks adaptation with their ampullae organ can operate in a similar way? Really curious about your thoughts? Loving your show by the way, it is really enjoyable listening to your stories and love how you deliver them to your audience, I am now a subscriber 😊👍🏻

Ad far as mistaken for fish or seal, if your in the ocean they'll eat whatever they want, I think their instinctually geared to eat period, they have their usual menu but will gladly eat any meat they can find, luckily were not a regular menu item, I think humans are just like ordering a new dish you never tried, not often, but if the sharks hungry or pissed, your in big trouble. Good luck to all, I love the ocean but since I saw jaws in 1975 I look around more.
