LA2A for comp and Waves h-verb. Backing vocals are always kind of tricky to mix.

Elliptic hipass filter, like 300Hz to create some telephone effect, but also eg. 220 Hz to get out of the way of some epiano or full sounding acoustic guitar.

Hi. I'm a hobbist on a limited budget. I've been using my Sony MDR 7506 for over ten years now and I think I want to upgrade, but still unsure if I should drop $550 for the Nuemann NDH-20 headphones. I'm having a hard time deciding if I should buy the Neumann NDH-20s or keep my Sony MDR 7506. I have Waves NX Studios plugin for checking my sound. The plugin supports both headphones. This software is one of the reasons the decision is so hard, do I really need to upgrade cause I have software that helps with decision process? I'm wondering should I save my money for other plugins, or should I get the Nuemann NDH-20?

Hi Sara. That "phrases not ending all together" thing used to drive our old choir master nuts (when I was in the choir back in the eighties). I recently watched the Coronation of Charles III and the choristers at Westminster Abbey were all over the place with their line-endings. It was really distracting and sounded so amateur, so THANKS for looking at this for backing vocals :-)

Hi Sara, great tips thank you. Often (depending on the role/presence of the vocals in a particular track) I will cut out of sync consonants from backing vocals altogether in places, particularly at the end of phrases, so that only the main vocal does these. This usually works really well for me and still sounds natural - can you comment on whether or not you use this approach, and what you see as important to consider? Thanks again, you rule!
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! That's a great tip actually, I might try it 😀

Great tips, Sara! Thank you! It feels like the vid got truncated around the 10-minute mark where you jump into compressor usage without an intro. What was the context? Thanks again!
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing Жыл бұрын
Yes, I took sections out of my punk mixing course to make this video, so it is a bit clunky. Compression goes towards the balance aspect I talk about at the start of the video. Thanks for the question!

All great info from Sara! SO MUCH of making backing vocals work has to do with the performance (or the editing of a less-than-perfect performance). The rhythmic/consonant timing is a big deal! I have no hesitation in cutting off ending consonants on the backing vox if I can't elastic audio/time stretch. If I can hear them flamming with the lead, chop 'em off. Especially "s" sounds. Quick question for you, Warren: Any updates on the prizes for the Feb 2023 Rate My Mix mix competition? I got 3rd place (you called my mix "dangerous") and the guy that was corresponding on it from your organization said "you'll hear from me this weekend" on May 1. Since then silence. I've now taken to commenting on a ton of your videos until I hear back. Any updates?
