One thing that really kills the vibe of a video is when there's really epic music while someone is doing really boring stuff. Like we don't need a dubstep remix while you're eating a sandwich, just chill

I generally choose a few different tracks before I start filming and listen to them on repeat. I didn't do this with my last film and it showed. I ended up editing 3 different versions before I found one I liked. Music is the hardest decision for me, it affects how people feel about the film and your content as a whole! Thanks for these tips, keep up the great work!👊👊👊

Do you end up getting horrible editing flashbacks whenever you hear the song when your out? LOL I find myself reliving the editing process whenever it plays!

That happens more when you depend on music as your narrative. You are basically letting what's been created drive the narrative vs shaping that with elements yourself. Nothing wrong with it, but even after 15 years editing, music selection is still a very high priority when it comes to any edit. That will never go away ;)

I just chose some iconic classical music for my last video. I was struggling to find new music that would fit my video on Epidemic sound, so I got lazy and searched for some oldies. I used Beethoven, Vivaldi, and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. It actually went with my video pretty nicely though.

Hey Matti, I think for me the most important part in choosing the right music is to answer the question what emotion I want to evoke or transport to the viewer. As shown with your opening clip, changing the music totally changes the feel of an image. Add some color grading to this and it changes the look and fee again. Sometimes it’s also good to experiment and ditch the rules - take a clip and put different music underneath and see what people feel when they watch it... Thank you again for another great inspirational video!!

Did you really leave the color grading off the clip around 1:14 to maybe see what the shirt design says?? 😅

Good tips Matti! Music selection is big, one thing i've found working as an editor that really helps a lot is changing the music up often which makes the video feel more dynamic. If your ideas shift over the course of your video your music should match that. It makes music selection more time consuming for sure. Different music also really helps with the feeling of progression in a video, the same music throughout can start to feel a bit repetitive and our brains don't feel like we've gone anywhere. And like narrative, everything needs to be moving forward in a film (repetition is bad story telling). In the professional world you're expected to score. Peaks and valley's, resolves where appropriate and music selection that enhances the scene. You also deal with loads of notes, especially when using commercial tracks in a film/tv series etc. Of course this is all done way before you get clearance. Everybody's got a note on music. Great video! (i said that already)

Yes I only have about seven videos under my belt and a couple video games. But so far the way I do it is I try to change the song whenever I change the video game. Or if my video is over one video game but basically has three subjects or three parts, I'm going to change the song for each part. Does that seem like a good idea? It's a little extra work but I think it can help with audience retention and like you said, making it really feel like the video is moving and you are making progress.

Thank you for your tips. I youtubed "music for travel videos" and found a channel that has some nice music that seems well balanced and easily enjoyable for most, but was afraid that I was doing something that seemed kinda "corporate," or in other words "everybody and their moms use that kind of music." So this helped I think. I just gotta find music that fits the mood of my work and not just what I think sounds good or personally enjoy.

My process to choose a good song for a video normally starts before I shoot any footage. First I need to know the mood I want the video to have and then I search for the right song. After getting that perfect song, I just listen it in repeat as much as I can, so that when I shoot, I have the rhythm stuck in my head and all the shots are recorded according to it.

I love going niche, but are aware of people not liking it. Did use punk music in a travel video once. Not surprisingly the dislikes were coming in. Problem with music like you used in the intro is that everyone starts using it and it becomes boring pretty fast. I like to use stems now (thanks for P Mckinnon pointing that out), mixing it up a little bit, takes more time, but opens up loads of new options. :)

Awesome tips, I could agree more with having music in mind for you and the public together. I would say look at the feel of the content, really feel the music you would want to use, and find the wave forms where they rise and drop, and utilize those natural developments. Editing and forcing some music for your content can become cluttered and unnatural to the intended feel of the music. ALSO a great music tip, watch and learn from those you admire and enjoy (TravelFeels, obviously), but also switch it up, evolve, don't recreate. :) THANKS MATTI!!!! ✌️

Hi Matti, I'm going to have to disagree with you on matching sad footage with sad songs and happy footage with happy songs to enhance emotion. I think a great case of this is the famous scene for Up! The music they play is actually quite sad classical throughout when the footage shows them happily together. I think it depends more on the film you are shooting but just an example and opinion. Keep up the great work and you need to do more with Marcus!

That b-roll intro though! :-D Peter has some serious competition now! :-D I don't think I can agree with the second point though. I do understand what your saying. I want as many people as possible to see what I have to offer too. But I think the creator should always make what they want to make, and not what will just get views. I think standing out, is more important then following a trend. In my opinion of coarse. :-)
