Being a diesel truck tech for over 40 years and a truck shop owner for 33 years now, I can tell you are a very seasoned tech who actually does the work. Your attention to the little details when explaining why you changed this or that can only really be understood by those who have actually done these things you are talking about and realize that what you have done to modify this, will actually help, in that exact situation you are trying to modify it for. For example, the plastic boxes motors and transmissions come in, unless you have never actually hooked a chain to one of those and tried to lift it out of the box, would you realize that the legs are too close together ( on most hoists) and you end up putting one side of the box up on the legs of the hoist. Excellent little point. The reversible hoist small detail about having to just push forward or back to go up or down. Unless you have never used a rachet type hoist or come-a long, would you know that tiny detail that is so important when trying to stab a engine. The hood insulation, the tilting of engine, the holding of engine in position, ratchet strap hooks for both sideways and front to back adjustment are all excellent details only seasoned techs will notice. Great job.

G'day from West Australia😉 43yrs trade life as 3rd gen Automotive Engineer. Just had to say the only good Engine hoist I ever had I built. Everything currently on the market is junk. Must be time to build another one. Annnd make sure it doesn't grow legs and run away like my original one did😊 Nice job buddy, thumbs up from me 👍👍

I super enjoyed your quality work. I think the hand winch was such a good idea. Adds a lot of versatility to the cherry picker. I use an adjustable crane on on one of my racks. I have a pit that I usually use to pull engines, although I haven’t done one for awhile. The advantage of the pit is that u have full access to the underside of the car whilst lifting the engine out with a come along. I support the trans with a transmission jack that always stays in the pit.

Thanks for the compliment! And yeah the hand winch is now a mandatory accessory in my book.

Hi T R. Love your well thought out modifications and fabrication skills applied to the stock engine hoist. I can use these on my engine hoist (machine hoist, that's all I bought it for, lifting and moving machines). I ain't an engine tech fan but enjoyed watching you modification methods. I like those HD casters as well. Cheers Tony

Very well done! I’m going to do a custom build lift of my own design to be able to employ some of these concepts and modularity while also able to maintain a somewhat compact design. I’d also like to add an area to the rear to stack counterweights in order to lift much heavier loads and have thought a lot about a multi-stage boom section in order to gain some height. That would all essentially turn an engine lift into a mini crane…. Or possible death trap, but time will tell. 😂

Very nice mods. I'm going to install cast iron casters to drop the height of my hoist as I have had issues running into control arms & equipment. Plus my casters don't roll well. I'm also making the front two casters non-swivel. I can steer it from the rear we'll enough. Thinking about a winch...

That American Forge Hoist bears a striking resemblance to the old ExCell W1000 (2 ton) American made lift.

Yes it looks identical but I'm sure the 🇺🇸 model had much better welds!

You are a GENIUS! It's crazy how such simple upgrades make a difference! Have you considered changing the hoist wheels? Thank you.

Thanks but all the credit should go to the other KZbin channels that gave me this idea. Also, I did replace the front wheels in this video. The rear swivel casters I left alone.

@@TechnicianRed do you think the winch added a mechanical advantage? On my cherry-picker, I want to add most of what you've done. I, too, wish to make use easier and to get a better mechanical advantage. Somehow rig a block & tackle etc. I think I might be expecting too much from the lift. I use my lift to get equipment in and it of my truck. Most of the time, I'm alone doing this by myself. Thanks again for your sharing your knowledge.
@TechnicianRed
@TechnicianRed Жыл бұрын
@@xFalconFixerthe winch would only add mechanical advantage with a pulley setup but your lifting speed would be cut in half at a minimum. The winch I have has plenty of power to do these light duty diesels and is still much quicker overall than using the hydraulic ram on the boom.

That top post bending can be cured with reinforcement before it bends. Or adding a tube inside the boom arm, then drilling the inner tube to pin at the 2T mark. (2 pins, weight is on them)

The HF legs, remake them 90° from the back tube. This makes pallets fit inside the legs

And the winch, maybe welding a snatch block on top. Why redesign the wheel, and you'll get to keep the original hook
@TechnicianRed
@TechnicianRed 10 ай бұрын
The original hook still works. I keep it hanging from the hoist at all times in case I need it. I switch over to the hook if I am lifting something over 1500lbs.

Nice job, how high can the end of the crane go up? I am thinking of buying this so I can lift Bridgeport Mill up and down. I am not sure if this is too small for me.

do you remember the lift truck model # that you removed the counterweight from and do you think a 2ton lift would remove it. it will help me out a lot if you reply. THANKS

What's the weight that your brother was lifting with that 2T hoist in the most extended position, I am thinking if that hoist had some metal strengthening in some key places, it would hold a fair bit more would out bending problems?

did you test it on a 1 ton load setting? i don't think this is capable of 1 ton at that length, those rectangelar profiles don't look capable of lifting a 1 ton load.
@TechnicianRed
@TechnicianRed Ай бұрын
The heaviest part I have lifted was our forklift counterweight but I had the boom in the 3 ton position. As far as the 1 ton position goes I have lifted several fully dressed modern diesel engines weighing in at 1200+ lbs and it handles it just fine with zero deflection so I imagine it would handle the full 1 ton without issues.
