Thanks.. i loaned out my crane and got it back with the ram out with no seal on the bottom. now i know how to get in there and hopefully can find the seal and evertyhing intact since it was a new harbor freight unit.

Sorry to hear about that. The borrower must have extended it too far. I worked on a floor jack recently and it had a built in pressure release to prevent that from happening but haven't seen them on the long ram jacks, for some reason. I hate loaning out my tools because I take the time to read the manuals and properly care for my tools, where as the idiots who borrow them are careless so I tend to get tools back late, dirty, scratched up, damaged, etc. Engine cranes are one of those tools that every backyard mechanic wants to borrow cause they don't wanna store something that big and/or pay for one. I've actually had confrontations with two different acquaintances who borrowed mine and caused problems for me. Best to throw those things under a tarp and don't tell anyone you have one -_-

Silly question - could you not have stacked two of the 5mm seals to make up a 10mm seal with two lips? That way if one failed the second would hold too?
@frylockthefryman
@frylockthefryman 6 ай бұрын
The hydraulic parts salesman actually suggested that to me when I told him I wanted a 10mm high seal but I wouldn't do it. Having one u cup seal means that it will have a solid steel shoulder to rest on and apply pressure to but if you stack them then the outter seal will get all the pressure from the fluid and will push that force against the lips of the seal behind it, rather than the steel shoulder. Just my .2c but who knows.

I'm not sure what the part numbers are for the seals I ordered because I ordered them based on size. If you have the same hoist I have you can order your seals based on the sizes I put in the video. Everything is metric for this long ram jack.

@@frylockthefryman thanks man, however I had it taken care of a couple weeks ago. I took the ram to a hydrolic supply house in the sacramento area. and they actually gave me the seals for free, and only charged me for the 1/2 hour of labor which was about 50 dollars. I added new fluid from harbor freight and it lifts great now! Thank you for your video. This is quality in depth information.

Could you tell me if there are 2 x steel balls at the base of the pump? I did retrieve one from in there and found one more on the floor!

What is the name of the seal at the bottom that you didn’t replace? Mine was broken and I need to change it. And what’s the name of the local shop you bought your kit from? I would like to use your measurements to rebuild mines. This will be my first time doing so and I wouldn’t know what parts to ask for. Our cylinders look identical.

Hydraulic Sales and Service inc. If you're talking about the one at the bottom of the reservoir I think it's just called the reservoir base seal. I didn't pull it out but from looking at the video I think it's just a large o-ring.

Where were you able to buy the seals and O-rings?
@frylockthefryman
@frylockthefryman 3 жыл бұрын
I purchased them at a local hydraulic supply company. If you live in a big city you should have one locally. If not, you could try a company that supplies parts for heavy equipment, like bobcats, tractors, and excavators. There are hydraulic supply companies online as well but the prices will probably be a bit higher than purchasing locally.

So I've added oil to mine but it still won't lift a load. It pumps and lifts without boom attached but not with. I've tried bleeding air but maybe I did it wrong or it could be bad seals inside? I got it without oil plug in it. Maybe debris or junk got in it?

DIY an electrolysis rig for rusty parts. It will make your projects easier. A 12v analog battery charger, some low-alloy steel wire, some low alloy sacrificial steel, a bucket, and some washing soda (sodium carbonate, not sodium bicarbonate) is all you need. Just hook up the negative lead to the parts you want to save, and the positive to the sacrificial steel, make sure it is bubbling slightly at 2 amps, and ignore it. It will remove any galvanized or chromium coatings of course. Keep stainless or chrome steel out of it, as hexavalent chromium is bad stuff.

I plan to get a blasting cabinet eventually to make cleaning up small parts much easier. I wouldn't mind trying your method at some point though. I cleaned the inside of a rusty gas tank with white vinegar and then swished distilled water with baking soda in it afterwards and I was VERY happy with the results. Only problem with that is that you have to let it sit for a long time; I let the vinegar sit for 10 days.

This 2 ton hoist requires an 8 ton hydraulic long ram jack and they typically go for $80+. This is also a Black Jack hoist purchased around 2006 and many times the older the tool, the better the quality. Plus, I enjoy repairing machinery and bringing it back to life. I purchased a 1980s Craftsman floor jack for $10 with bad seals and got it working with new seals for under $20 as well.
