How To Get Respect Without Being A Bully - Jordan Peterson
goo.gl/DLouoh
Jordan Peterson recently expertly handled a debate during an interview with BBC's Channel 4 news (The video was called: Jordan Peterson debate on the gender pay gap, campus protests and postmodernism). And JBP did it without being a bull or being aggressive. So how do we get respect without being a bully? Well, we often think that getting respect and being aggressive go hand in hand. Because unfortunately, it’s often the bully that gets the most respect in the schoolyard and even in the workplace. But Jordan Peterson is an exemplar of a different way to generate massive amount of respect. So in this video we’re going to explore 3 main things he does that force people to respect you WITHOUT being a bully.
Now, we focused a lot on respect in this video but that's actually just one out of four emotions that are going to create an amazing first impression on anyone cross-culturally. Now, if you're curious with the other three emotions that you want to create in that person are to make an amazing first impression, I made a video on that that breaks down what those four emotions are so that you can start using them today to consistently make killer first impressions.
0:30 Jordan Peterson calls it "pacing your reality"
4:50 Jordan Peterson tells stories effectively
6:54 Jordan Peterson uses archetypal stories

Well, everyone has something, positive, negative, as examples that one can learn from. Every person, no matter their intelligence or education or life's circumstances was made as an individual.... with no one on earth being 100% identical. Every person has value.... maybe some contribute to mankind more than others, but there is a takeaway, large or miniscule from everyone. Hard to remember that sometimes for me as I let other things become more important than people sometimes. I need to be cognizant of that always. Have a good one, friends.

I was in a very elevated state of anxiety at the time. My condition would be obvious to someone like him, but for me, from the moment we shook hands I felt the immediate change in my demeaner. An immediate calming down, foot off the gas, take a moment to breath type of change. The type of antidote a guy like Jordan Peterson is very good at administering. It felt real and it felt sincere. Like he took the weight from my shoulders and carried it away. Apparently it was noticeable 'cause when I went back upstairs to my son's room I had quite the glow on. I saw something from Peterson in one of those final clips that I don’t think I’ll ever see his contemporaries, specifically people who specialize in “owning” their opponents (biggest example in my mind being Ben Shapiro), he’s just standing with his hand on his chin, calmly listening to the opinions of the person who’s talking to him. It conveys a deep respect for not just the person, but for their intelligence and right to have an opinion, and I think that’s what gains him respect during and after debates. Unlike people who indulge in shouting matches to feed their ego or widen their echo chamber, he appears to have a deep respect for the other person, which makes it easier for them to respect him in turn. Tl;dr: An easy way to gain respect is by first showing someone else that respect, people are more likely to show you respect if they themselves feel respected.

Thanks for the breakdown! Learned some great things. To address the first point: Peterson is an avid thinker and I'm not sure if he's consciously doing the "That's a good point" technique. I rather believe that to arrive at a conclusion he really believes in, he has this internal dialogue with himself, where he plays both sides of the argument. That also ties into the "you"s and hypotheticals that he uses, as these are his habits of discussing with himself. It's like a constant training for your brain to switch from perspective to perspective in an argument, which is now ingrained into him. That's how he's able to say "That's a good point" with conviction as it is something he has seriously considered before judging.

@Charismaoncommand
@Charismaoncommand 6 жыл бұрын
That "down time" you spend thinking in a debate likely seems much longer to you (in your own head) than to anyone else. So don't force yourself to answer immediately - you're better off with a 5 second pause that lets you collect yourself than immediately jumping into a rambling response. If you've ever watched Elliott Hulse speak on camera (we have a video on him) he does an excellent job of allowing these breaks. If done right, without filler words, this time you take to collect your thoughts actually captures more attention because of the pregnant pause

Embrace the speed of your thought processes. Generally speaking, taking time actually makes for a more well-rounded response that shows you grappled with the topic, and not just saying the first thing off the top. If you pace your delivery (pausing to give people time to digest your words) as well as your thought process, you come across as someone who is knowledgeable as opposed to slow. Because you own the pauses, people will naturally listen more closely and take what you're saying on board. Chances are you're not as slow to respond as you think anyway - just look at the number of commas I used typing this lol

Except he's really not. Charisma is literally defined as a compelling attractiveness or charm that inspires devotion in others. When more than half of the people who are aware of your existence hate your guts, and the only people who seem to see that charm or attractiveness in you are the ones that already agreed with your obvious prejudices, clearly there's nothing "compelling" there. You wanna see real charisma? Look to guys like The Rock, Terry Crews, Keanu Reeves, Chris Hemsworth - the kind of guys that next to nobody has a bad word to say about, no matter what walk of life they come from. That's charisma. I guess I'd give you speech in that he has a good vocabularly and speaks with confidence and conviction.... but I mean, so do dictators. So do sociopaths. So do cult leaders (which frankly I'd argue he's verging on himself.) That's not only not always a good thing, but in the wrong person it's a very dangerous quality.

If you take a winny, anxious and insecure kid practicing the same techniques as Mr Peterson, he will only be seen as agreeable and afraid of conflict. This is just my opinion thou, you are sharing value with this video, these are indeed good points for getting respect, but as long as you dont fix you communications skills in a deeper level, no one - and I repeat - NO ONE will be compelled to listen. We make judgemente of who deserves our attention and respect in the first fraction of a second we meet, and we finish our assumptions by about 7 seconds. That being said, if you happen to present a weak impression, no amount of diplomacy and dialogue will change their opinion, even if you have the most important thing to say. Ahah good point, but even that I think was a gentle move. He couldn't help it, after that woman was agressively trying to turn him into a villain the whole interview. And after getting to know the dude a bit better, I am now absolutely sure that, if he wanted, he could have absolutely humiliated Cathy and end her career on that interview.

Professor Peterson is a personal hero of mine. His discussion is pointed and articulate yet often unaccusatory when possible. He understands that his philosophies and ideals are held behind a barrier of demeanor and character. He's less concerned about winning the argument and more concerned about saving the culture, and society looks at his expressions before they see into his ideas. It's beautiful and necessary for today's common discourse. Thank you for the video

I have this saved on one of my playlists, I think it is very insightful. I think we can put it into practice best by embracing the principals and honing our character. I think the principals are a respect and genuine care for all people and an empathy with their journey of trying to understand life. If this was taken as tools and techniques to gain respect and change peoples minds then it misses the point and people will see through it. I’ve heard people teach ways of showing that you are listening, leaning in, nodding head occasionally etc. Then I heard someone cut through all that who said, ‘ never mind trying to look like you are listening, just really listen and concentrate on trying to understand.’, concentrating on caring for someone else.

I absolutely love someone who goes out of their comfort zones and goes against their own beliefs or the narrative that they have believed for one reason or another, some of which they may not even remember. Pick a topic you believe in then research against your own bias. Do this on a regular basis and watch yourself, your knowledge and your positions change.

One of my favored tactics for discussion is attempting to separate the topic and opinions from the people arguing it. Then reframe the whole exercise as we both attempting to disect the topic. Usually the tone changes into something more akin to teamwork as opposed to controversy or confrontational.

I always wondered 'how do these simple people become gurus to the masses?'. After watching Dr. Peterson for so long, I must admit he shows the answer again and again. He must've found the jewel in the heart, the source of all knowledge. If so, it wasn't easy, it took hard work to get to the top of his field, and then boom! Illumination. (I'm sure he doesn't have all the answers but the sensible truth flows right out of him).

To point 1, my philosophy: If I can't argue FOR my opposition, then I can't argue AGAINST them. Seeing where they come from is necessary to connect, but it's also a safeguard for your personal beliefs. If they're not worthy of being challenged, then they're not worthy of having, let alone sharing. I have massive respect for Peterson specifically because he's so calm and gracious whenever he can and should be, but he refrains from being a pushover. He can empathize and still disagree knowing his position better precisely because he's familiar with the opposite opinion.

I DON'T KNOW WHY IT IS ..BUT, I GET THIS AWFUL BAD GUT FEELING, WHEN PEOPLE REFER TO MOVIES AS A EXAMPLE OF 'ANYTHING' ?! I ONLY FIND FEW " MOVIES " INTERESTING, OR EVEN ENTERTAINING ! RARELY, IF EVER, WOULD I RECALL SOME LINE FROM A MOVIE AS ANYTHING WORTH REMEMBERING , FOR ANY GOOD REASON !! MAYBE THAT'S JUST ME ..BUT I GUESS I DON'T SEE THEM AS IN ANYWAY 'REAL' ..OR HAVING ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE 'REAL' 'WORLD' !! MORE LIKE 'CHEWING GUM' FOR THE 'EYE BALLS', A WAY TO PASS SOME TIME ,WHILE YOUR WAITING FOR SOMETHING TO HAPPEN, OR YOUR BORED , HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AT ALL TO DO, NO READING MATERIAL WORTHWHILE AROUND , OR TRYING TO MAKE A LONG WAIT, NOT SEEM SO LONG !!? I GET ANNOYED WHEN PEOPLE WANT TO POINT TO SOMETHING THEY HEARD OR SAW IN A MOVIE AS A REFERENCE ..MAYBE I DIDN'T SEE THAT MOVIE ! OR IF I MIGHT HAVE, JUST NEVER GAVE IT ANY REAL THOUGHT OR ATTENTION !! I WOULD RATHER READ A GOOD BOOK WELL WRITTEN ..AND GET MY INFORMATION, INSPIRATION , IDEAS , THOUGHTS ON " THINGS " FROM THAT AS APPOSED TO A "MOVIE" !? I THINK OF MOVIES AS MORE OF , IT WAS ENTERTAINING ,FUNNY, SCARY , SAD , INTERESTING, STRANGE , DIFFERENT, BORING , BAD , POORLY MADE , ON VERY RARE OCCASIONS WOULD I REMEMBER ANYTHING FROM A MOVIE AS IMPORTANT , UNLESS IT WOULD BE A DOCUMENTARY ..A TEACHING MOVIE , HISTORICAL , "IF" AND ONLY "IF" IT WAS ACCURATE !! I JUST DO NOT HOLD MOVIES IN HIGH ESTEEM ! AND I HATE TO WATCH A MOVIE MORE THEN ONCE .. MY RECALL IS VERY GOOD ! SO I DON'T WANT TO SIT THROUGH IT AGAIN !!! THAT'S THE VERY "HEIGHT OF BOREDOM" TO ME !!

I would often read the great G Gordon Liddy's works when trying to develop methods of getting respect. Based on the writings of this great man, I developed what I soon came to call my "machine walk". This walk was designed to elicit instant respect: ON SIGHT. Instead of bending my legs and arms like other walkers, I would hold my leg stiff and thrust it straight out, one step after another, often also shooting out my arm when greeting others using the same technique. Combined with singing loudly (often sea shanties and marching songs, merely to gain a momentary psychological edge), I often cause onlookers to stop and stare at me open mouthed, clearly showing their passionate and genuine respect, without ever having met me.

When arguing don't assume that you are always right, always be open on the possibility that you might be wrong, and constantly criticize or question your own beliefs so that if you enter an argument or a discussion, you'll be more likely to answer any questions against your beliefs as you probably already asked those questions to yourself before.
