Scarcity mindset sucks! It makes your broke, stingy, and fearful. If you aren't familiar with the term, scarcity mindset is the belief that there is never enough. Never enough money, food, clothing, love, etc. The flip side to this is abundance mindset, we want more of that! Abundance means there is plenty, more than enough for everyone.
As a person who has cleaned out a lot of closets, I can tell you from firsthand experience that a woman's closet tells me a lot about her - especially her mindset.

That was a breakthrough I had when I did my first challenge with Lauren. I wore too small, mismatched scrubs from Stuff or Goodwill or Salvation Army with shirts from Walmart or Target and hospital slipper socks and shoes from Stuff or Goodwill and free T-shirts advertising all kinds of businesses and my toiletries were from the supply closet at work. My bras and underwear were old and didn’t fit well. I realized I was worth more than free. I had tons of clothes that were too small from the juniors department that I was keeping and I realized I probably wouldn’t wear most of those clothes anymore because I was older and my lifestyle was different. Even if I lost weight, I wouldn’t enjoy wearing them. I sold a few garbage bags of clothes and that led me to sell my collection of free water bottles advertising several companies and free mugs I got as gifts. My parents were embarrassed by me or for me and took me shopping for Christmas and my birthday to buy pants that fit and weren’t scrubs. I had a nice dress my parents bought me for a wedding that was too small but I bought a cardigan and cheap heals from Walmart and I had all of this fantastic makeup and jewelry from my ballroom dancing days I was saving and not using. I pulled out a nice purse I was saving and not using. I went to an interview and I got the job. The heels fell apart within a few wears. I went from making $800 per pay period to $1,100. I didn’t wear scrubs anymore, so I quickly bought a few cheap shirts from Walmart that fell apart within a few washes. Little by little, I had my whole wardrobe replaced. When I did Lauren’s challenge the second year, I had clothes that were too big and lots of good pieces that didn’t make good outfits. Little by little, I phased out my crappy clothes and I focused on whole outfits and shopping with intention. I had really nice stuff I was saving. I put together a nice outfit and my father made me a new resumé and I kept telling my parents I wasn’t settling for less than my standards and I was going to do my hair and my makeup my way. I got a job with all of my dream specifications. No more weekends. No more evenings. No more holidays. No more bodily fluids. No more heavy lifting. I dropped to $940 per pay period though. My friend who works in HR took me shopping for business casual clothes. I didn’t have debt. I saved $4,000. I replaced my 2001 Beetle with no speedometer, no odometer, no heating and cooling, smelled like vomit, tires always went flat, broken windshield wipers, barely made it from point A to point B and it went very slowly with a 2021 Toyota Corolla with Apple CarPlay and a backup camera. Now, you have to look nice in a brand-new car and Lauren said to look nice, so I was still rocking business casual and I was excited to show off my heels, my jewelry, my makeup, my nails... I moved to work from home and I started making $1,500 per pay period doing special projects. I thought I was fantastic. I went to do Lauren’s challenge and I realized I had given up my hair and my makeup and my nails and my pants were too big and I wasn’t showing up for myself because it’s COVID and nobody can see me, so it’s a waste. I looked at my Pinterest board and I had been pinning the same outfits for 9 years but that’s usually not how I was dressing. I was scared of attention. Are my parents going to get on me for red lipstick or for showing too much skin or for being too dressed up? Are my friends going to think I look stuck up? I sure don’t want guys to hit on me. I realized that because I had been raped, I had been trying not to draw attention by wearing baggy clothes and dark clothes and just not embracing my inner glam girl. I did my hair and makeup and nails and my outfit entirely for me one day. Nobody else saw it. And then, I did it the next day. My father said I looked really pretty. I had been hiding my authentic self.

Holy wow I needed this. I live in small town midwest and get Nordstrom's trunk club because I miss living in a bigger city, and I just got my new trunk and love so much in it, but omg am totally having that scarcity mindset! I have the funds and can afford what I want out of it but keep talking myself out of it. Nope, no longer. I WANT to look amazing for my job, I WANT to get promoted, I WANT to have an amazing style even in podunk no where. And I 100% will. ♥️ Thanks for the lunchtime pep talk ♥️

Awesome video! As a Mum of 2 with one in college and one in middle school I am just coming out of this kinda thing. Not so much scarcity but more of a everybody else first mentality lol. I’m def guilty of buying on sale majority of the time but watching your videos over the years has helped me zero in on my tastes and build my basics up. If I can’t find it on sale I wait n save! Love you girl n thx for all you do💯🙋🏾‍♀️❤️

Guilty, good point. I never had a ton of money as a teen, I wore hand-me downs, things that were bought for me but not my style but can't run around without clothes right, and only being able to shop sales to have something new as a broke student... Which sometimes was awesome to discover cuts or colors, but also was a miss wearing clothes that really weren't me. I felt like a garbage bag. I've been working on this for a few months. Browsing normal priced sections is still hard today but I love browsing secondhand, like depop, sites. I can browse good quality brands, pay way less and really reflect on my purchases and feel good about them. Feeling more stylish and my confidence blew up :)

Interesting, never thought of scarcity/ abundance affecting closets. I’m some one who needs more than one of sneakers for example, but I’m happiest when my closet is minimal because it’s actually easier to get dressed when I have less clothes if that makes sense

AMAZING Lauren ... i have to say i am always telling people about the dangers of scarcity mindsets - but my closet is all that. sales stuff, beautiful new stuff that i don't wear. How do we stop? how do we introduce an abundant mindset in our closets. Incredible ... really makes me think. woah.

Wow, fascinating. I am familiar with the scarcity/abundance mindset in regards to money, I just never thought about it in terms of my closet! I definitely have some nice things I am reluctant to wear, which I will now be aware of that!

Wow, this hit home. I grew up really poor and so I was saying to my daughter I would save t-shirts for “good”, for “good”! How can a t-shirt be for good. I am now wearing all my clothes and ditching the old and worn, ill-fitting outdated items.

Ohhh my goodness; I think I have a very defined sense of style but you just blew my mind with the 3rd type of scarcity mindset. I’m definitely guilty of buying beautiful pieces and then not wanting to wear them but I don’t want to ruin them! I’m a big fan of your channel, pre-ordered your book the other night.

I have so many hand me downs because my friend buys the nicer quality brands and then passes them on to me. When I go shopping for my own clothing I go to Walmart. or Goodwill. I remember getting bags of hand me downs when I was in 6th grade being raised by a single mom and how embarrassed I was in high school to never have the latest trends unless I put them on my Christmas list. We never go out to eat without coupons. I take the free meals from the schools from the summers. We aren't broke but I have always seen it as being frugal. The money we don't spend on clothes or food (or vacations or new phones, etc etc) is money we have for other things. But somehow (you know what I am going to say) it is Never. Enough.
