Love that you brought up V2 - making the second verse interesting is one of my favourite songwriting challenges!

It's always fun to see where a song "wants to go." As to keeping interest in a song, I'll often write/produce from the gitgo throwing in the kitchen sink and then pull stuff out at the top, with less pulled in the middle and then Katie-bar-the-door at the tail. Other times I'll just write a simple piano sketch, letting things find their way into the production over time. Some songs don't have to happen "today." For example, there are times no matter what techniques I'm using to produce what I believe could be a killer song, it just isn't working out. Those are the days I walk off the battlefield so as to fight another day. Sometimes I just have to shout, "BUCKET!" Couldn't resist.

EXTREMELY and EXPONENTIALLY awesome information!!!!! That panning while recording thing is GENIUS!!!! The less you have to do while mixing... the better. That fix-it-in-the-mix thing is BAD NEWS in my opinion!!! Keep up the good work!!!

I played a gig with a covers band, with one original song that went: verse, chorus, verse, chorus, verse, chorus + guitar solo, verse, chorus. There were absolutely no dynamics or variation on each iteration, it didn't even have a bridge or a middle eight, just Riff A, Riff B. Repeat till audience dead. I left the band right afterwards. I'm not an expert song writer, far from it, but I wanted to be involved with music that inspires me. Life can be pretty dull for a bass player when there are no dynamics to play with.

I try to pan by giving each instrument an area to live in. Loud guitars L/R....accoustic guitars just inside. Depends on the number of instruments. I also, will let instruments come and go from the same pan area.

Another SA guy here. Biltong and droe wors are the best! Thanks for the tips! I spend so much of my time on sound design which means song arrangement takes the back burner for me which is a bad habit. I've tried out Studio One before and I must say there are certain features I wish other DAW's had. I produce almost exclusively on headphones, and would like to know if you could advise on a decent pair of headphones with a limited budget?

Hey Joe! Just wondering if possibly in the future there could be a PreSonus Sphere "Lite" or something like that for us that already own Studio One 5 Pro and would just love to be able to access your exlusive content like the live streams and so on? :D

Absolutely brilliant video. Simple and informative. I love Joe's "no jargon" approach which really helps. I will definitely use some of these tips on a song I am working on now. Well done from Ireland, Joe!

@@presonus please include the diagonal cut to strum chords. Also make the nudged midi notes go around the looped area. Meaning if I nudge a midi note at the end of the loop it will move to the beginning of the loop. This can be good for TRAP hi hats if I highlight them all in the loop and nudge them in sync to test different vibes. The cut and paste function is totally different from this

How about the stereo recording or adding a stereo track, is that a way of panning or balancing left and right?
@GeoZero4 жыл бұрын
Great stuff here... I love production the most. It's like taking an omelette and adding new ingredients to it. Yummy. On my own songs I like a more "rock" feel. Vocals, Guitar, Bass and Drums. But I will sprinkle some low volume levels of Hammond organs, piano, shakers or percussion, synths, and other instruments that work with the song to propel it forward, give it some acoustical yummy-ness, and keep it exciting. Because my songs will be played live in a 3 or 4 piece band these elements will not be predominant in the recordings (and of course missing in the live versions), but will give the ear something to listen to. I try to take the same approach with other's songs I produce, and only add elements that will make the listening experience more exciting, while not taking away from the artist or band's live performances. You can also change tempos slightly throughout the song. A song at 125BPM can alternate between 123 and 128 easily, with softer parts slower, and choruses or outros faster. Slight variations of tempos will give the song a more human feel as well as provide additional ear candy for the listener, even if they don't realize why the song just got exciting.

Sphere stuff sucks. Now it's an option, not tomorrow. And day after tomorrow the price goes up. I get it, you wan't to be the next Pro Tools, and thats more money that way. But the kickassnesss of S1 is something else. Please don't change and not just say you won't.. I love S1. Joe Gilder stuff is great, the mixing master class was a game changer for me.. Would hope to see more of something like that, this really didn't showcase me anything new. But maybe that thorough content is at Sphere?.......... Keep it up though :)
@presonus3 жыл бұрын
Not sure what to tell you other than Sphere is separate from Studio One. You can own S1 without joining Sphere. - Joe Gilder
@JeighNeither2 жыл бұрын
A lot of what you're calling producing, I'd call modern songwriting. I think most auteurs write music that way these days, & I'm pretty sure you're an auteur. I guess that's why producers insist on songwriting credits ;)
@user-tf5lg7fc9s3 жыл бұрын
12 minutes? Hah, *no.* 1. Crescendo your Songs. (add dynamics) 2. Pan your tracks. (Analogy, your tracks are trash, throw them away in either the left trash can, or right trash can) 3. Verse 2 Rule: Do something different for verse 2
@satyr39204 жыл бұрын
You can't produce with studio one, if the song is longer than 6 minutes or if you want to use 3rd party plugins like waves, fab, t-RackS ... . The bucket is cool, to dispose S1. Studio one - Create with boundaries. Produce with limits!
@TheLazeeB4 жыл бұрын
