As a 45 year old who's had her share of (thankfully) mild injuries, I've learned to be super aware of the position my body is in and try to anticipate and avoid awkward positions that could result in injuries. Also, I always tap early in sparring. If I know that armbar is inevitable, I forget my ego and tap.

Awesome video. Freak accidents aside, I think a huge think is just respecting those little twinges we get training more. If during that armbar you felt a crack and it's sore afterwards, ice and heat it when you get home, address it asap, Instead of putting it off. It's like an injury spectrum: one end is the freak accidents and the other end is accumulative injuries (ex: if I get the same leg caught in tight kneebars over and over, those ligaments get stretched over and over. Then all of sudden, one day all it takes is a random awkward motion for it to go pop and it wasn't even a kneebar.

Haha! Clearly this is for bjj addicts, the coping tips being more about bjj withdrawal than healing 😄. I'm an older woman who just tried a first class yesterday. I doubt my body can bounce back from injury so, though I loved the class, I'm super nervous too! By the way watched lots of your videos before trying the class. Thanks for your wonderful content! xo

I have pulled a muscle in my back and couldn't bend my neck at all. I decided to stay home to fully recover and it was THE HARDEST time ever - it's so bloody hard to stay home when the rest of the people are training 😭😭 it's all for the best though, I'm fully recovered now !

Inflamed shoulder since November 20 - growing older isn't fun. I just try to train around it (my left side got a lot stronger in the last 6 months) and it's slowly getting better. Of course I tap early and often - but I do that when I'm injury free, too. I trained with broken ribs, fingers, wrecked joints... :) All possible if you take it slow. And I agree: neck injuries are most terrible - I tap to most cranks because of that, except in a competition.

Ha, perfect timing on the video, I pulled a muscle in my back during class on Tuesday, around my shoulder blade, been stretching with bands, which has helped, so imma be rolling tonight

This is my biggest fear. I would love to know ways to prevent injury. I’m petite and have a narrow neck. Like you said, neck injuries are no joke.

Hey @Kimberly Kinch! Love this video. So right on!! Would love if you did a video on techniques to prevent injury, especially for white belts! I got injured (outside jiu jitsu) right before my school quarter started, and I was out of the gym for almost 3 months. At first it was to rest my injury, but then it was because I was "busy" with school. Really, I was afraid to come back and look "weak" because I needed to take it slow for my shoulder. I ended up feeling sorry for myself and getting so isolated, and had so many negative effects for my physical and mental health. I should have just come to class and watched, or did whatever I could to stay involved, I would've just been so much happier. Finally I came back 2 weeks ago with a better attitude, and coach gave me my first belt stripe. I'm so motivated now to keep jiu jitsu worked into my lifestyle, in whatever way I can for where I'm at, without ego or expectations. It just helps so amazingly to balance things out. Thx for reading✌

Great idea! Yeah, we all handle injury differently. It's definitely something not easy to deal with. And just as you experienced, I think it really starts with your mindset. I'm happy to hear that you're back to training with a strong mindset and the desire to keep learning :)

Oh my gosh nooo hahah. I didn’t mean to scare ya! Definitely still try it out. Think of it this way - there’s a reason why people that are injured can’t stay off the mats lol.

Well, I have a pretty big hematoma left on my leg from an injury last week during training at the inside part of my shin bone :( . It swoll up pretty good immediately the same day. I asked some Thai-Box Trainer what they would recommend, and they said ice and warm compresses. So now, with all the COVID craziness going back up again here, I train for a minimum 1 1/2 hour per day at home, focusing on core and arm exercises, as well a stretching and hip flexibility (since I am 51 years young and sometimes everything kind of hurts: :) And this routine has truly helped me so far. The swelling is mostly gone after solid 6 days, only the hematoma (the hump) remains, but it is also getting smaller I believe. So yes, keep moving something if you can. Makes time pass away more quickly also.

I got injured tonight during king of the hill. I'm a white belt (5 weeks in) and rolled my ankle when I was getting swept. I don't have any awareness of my body which is why I think my ankle got rolled.

Hope it's feeling better! Little injuries like that do happen and most of the time they're just freak accidents.

I landed weird on my tailbone during a takedown over a month ago and it still isn’t the same. Still training though 😜
