Same here..low density..thin hair. I use a net cap and pile my hair on the top of my head to keep the volume. I can't use a bonnet because I sweat and it flattens our my hair. I love you Mell! Unfortunately, I could NEVER do the steam option - that's just a frizz disaster waiting to happen for my hair. Seriously, I can step out of my house here in Miami in the morning humidity for literally 5 seconds and within that time, my hair goes from lovely curls to complete tumbleweed frizzball! I have such high-maintenance curls, it's not even funny. I have watched I don't know how many videos from both you and other curly KZbinrs and do everything suggested for my hair and I still can't get my hair to look as perfect as I'd like. I do love my curls, but I have to really work for them to look good. Plus, it doesn't help that I live in Miami - there are only two seasons here: Hot and Hotter! And it's too damn humid; I've never understood people who think the weather here is so great. It's a freaking swamp made specifically for reptiles and other creatures who thrive in the heat and humidity LOL. I also don't know how some other curlies go to having 4- and 5-day hair looking so great! I can barely go 3 days, and my 3-day hair still looks like crap compared to some others I've seen, so for me, I have to have a wash day all over again too soon. All that to say, my refresh consists of pretty much re-wetting my hair all over; like having a wash day without the shower and without the whole shampooing/no-pooing/conditioning. If I don't do that, I will never have refreshed curls as nice as yours, Mell! I always have to plan out at least a good hour and 1/2 in the morning to do my version of refresh, which is almost as time-consuming as my wash day. I wish there was a better way, but I could never get away with my curls looking that great simply with the tips you recommended. But I keep watching your videos because you're funny, awesome, real, and know your stuff! I guess I have to keep doing even more trial and error with my hair (AGAIN!) until I get this ish right!! LOL

@user-dz2hj6jo5h4 жыл бұрын
Rebecca if you’re talking about increasing volume, layering definitely helps, separation techniques, keratin treatments focused on the roots will give your hair more lift and strength. And thin hair doesn’t always mean that you’re unhealthy but my hair strands were thin for a while because i didn’t have enough iron intake and they’re only just coming in thick again. Also be very gentle with your hair to prevent breakage.The best way to comb hair is from the ends and working your way up.

@ryptoll4801 Жыл бұрын
This is great advice. I just recently started watching your channel and I'm really grateful for you putting out all these skills you've learned about styling and taking care of curly hair. I used to have straight hair all my life, up until age 28, which was just 5 years ago. Then it started to naturally curl itself, little by little over time. My guess is that it was due to hormonal fluctuactions because my hormones changed radically around that time, but basically I went from being approximately a 2A to a 3B, which is a big change. Since I always wanted curly hair but never got the courage to get a perm, I was delighted to receive this gift from the gods. But having grown up with straight hair I had no clue how to style my suddenly curly hair, as it also came with a change from oily to dry hair, and from thick to thin hair. Nothing about my hair is the same as it was when I grew up, except from it's color and being fine. So absolutely zero of my old hair routine steps worked anymore. There was a lot of seriously doomed trial and error. I noticed that most hair advice is for people with straight hair, or for straightening curly hair, so it's been difficult to find tricks that work for curly hair you want to keep curly. But I'm dedicated to learn how to treat my new hair type right! Even though it's an uphill battle to deal with it, I love my curls and I'm very happy to have them.

Question of the day: Living in the South, Fall/Winter becomes one huge confusing wet and windy season. Would these products help with that? Or is this more for the people who experience real winter when it's dry and windy.
@GinaMarieCheeseman4 жыл бұрын
Living in the San Joaquin Valley of California, fall is warm. Normally rainy season starts here in October but it hasn't rained yet. So it's warm and dry. Winter may be unseasonably dry and warm this year. I'm clueless what to do for my curls.
@kierasaurusfrost4 жыл бұрын
Meh I was thinking the same thing! In Southern California, its a mixture throughout fall and winter of dry heat, humid heat, dry cold (for us, cold is like 60 degrees, maybe high 50s lol), occasional rain (but rain here is a mere sprinkle with a small chance of a slight pour), and wind. Just in the last two weeks, we’ve had a day and a half of sprinkling and humidity, a few dry 90+ degrees days, a couple dry 60 degree days, and now it’s like 80 degrees and super windy. I never know which products will work for be week because the weather changes so fast here! I’m going to try Mel’s tips for today! Can’t get much worse, right?

Question for mell: does Ethylhexylglycerin also count as THE glycerin that we should avoid in our hairproducts in the winter? Wanted to use it but now im not sure

datGreekgal mel says that we should avoid it in the winter. In the winter the air is looking for moisture and takes it from your hair as outcome that your hair becomes frizzy and dry

Hi Mell! Since I've started watching your videos, my hair has got muuuch better. But I've been struggling with an issue: I can't part my hair. I don't know if it's normal but if I put products in my hair, it stays in a part and it's IMPOSSIBLE to change it. If I don't use any products, I can easily change the side part but my hair looks terribile without products (I don't know how to explain it haha). I'd like to switch my part because one side is too flat compared to the other one, especially the roots (and with the middle part I look like a child). Have you got any tips please? Thank you for you great tips!! Istill have a silly doubt, I cycle to work for 30 mins everyday and somedays in Ireland can be so windy that I areiv home with very weaty hair, specially on the scalp, so would you say it is OK to shower and wash my hair with water and ad a little bit of conditioner mid ends, I usually put a little gel or mousse to style, (just one product to avoid build up), and then let it air dry for the night, or diffuse depending how late. I wash my hair with shampoo twice a week, my hair is so so fine and it's wavy, so when I arrived home its a mess, I'm recovering from hair loss due to stress, so I have very little hair, and I'm worried that by doing this, I will have more hair loss. Hi Mel. Love your videos! Can you please please do a video at some point about products that you can get in Australia. Some of the products you recommend either don’t ship to Oz or costs an arm and a leg. It’s so hard to find products especially if you aren’t in a major city. Thanks!

Mel, love your videos! Love the info! Question: I quit using mouse years ago as it seemed to add really dry out my curls and cause increased problems with frizz. I assumed this was from the alcohol content. Are mouses still this way? Or was I doing something wrong? Any info/ tips/advice on that? I have super fine, 3 b-4a curls. Thanks!!!

It's like you read my mind! Thank you for this video. I was at a loss as to how to lessen the number of washes in what I know is dry, permed hair. This is amazing help. BTW, I have been following you a while now, and I'm getting lots and lots of compliments on my curls.

This is so helpful because I was born with curly hair but never knew how to take care of it, the curl pattern is super inconsistent and my hairs always frizzy, but I’m slowly learning and this is so helpful!!

We have different curl textures , so I can’t get the same look as you do . Can you do a video on different products and what works best in different textures / patterns

MELLLLLL!!!! I wanted to see if you’d compare the CONAIR ROLL & SMOOTH CONDITIONING COMB (roller COMB) *vs* THE DENMAN (5 or 9 row) here’s a link: www.target.com/p/conair-roll-38-smooth-conditioning-comb/-/A-77571554 I’d even send you it I’m so curious to see what you do with it. I use it and the denman the same way you do (conditioner and or product NOT my gel cause it goes horribly for me with any tool lol) BUT I feel like this is a better tool than the denman in some ways cause it has a removable silicone roller with little teeth all over it to distribute product AND HOLD ONTO EXCESS like the denman silicone does accept this has little teeth on the silicone like micro flexible combs but unlike the denman it allows you to grab a ton of hair if you do big clumps and REALLY get the layer off the scalp where the denman almost just brushes the hair right down onto the scalp so you need to really work with the scalp area. I started using this for my stylers and denman for my conditioner .... I do notice this comb allows you to twist at the ends more if you go for the but where the denman allows you to twist and wrap the hair into the brush multiple wraps this doesn’t because it’s a comb and will pull a little on the spots where the mold made the comb on the machine - so if you finger curl with the denman using the brush handle where you put the comb into the root area and start to comb down to the mid shaft and then start twisting til your happy like one of the older hair school type of hot curl irons if you know what I mean (OR like even similar to those rotating barrel irons work where the barrel spins and there is a hot plate and bristles that the hair passes between giving a curl to the straightened hair. ). THANKS MEL! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I get so much help from all the info you share and of course your delivery just makes it even better! 😂❤️Thanks for the extra refresh video. Since I’m all about the why and how it works, I’m definitely voting for product ingredients next! Thank you again!

Thanks for this! I’m learning from you that I need to be mindful about what my hair needs, depending on the day, rather than just use the same refresh technique every day. I swim 2x-3x per week, which really mats up and dries out my curls, even tho I use two caps. Figuring out when I need to deep condition, when I need protein, more moisture, etc., is a constant education for me, but videos like these really help!!

No Deva Curl products! I can’t even begin to tell you the damage Deva Curl has done to my hair. After a year off all Deva Curl, it is finally looking good again and is healthy.

Using a silk or satin pillow makes me sweat even worse than I normally do. The bonnet gives me a migraine no matter how loose I have it. And refreshing 😅 I end up redoing my hair every single day refreshing doesn't do anything but ruin my hair so I have to completely soak it in water again and add product as needed and my hair takes SO LONG TO DRY EVEN WITH A DYSON HAIR DRYER AND MY ENDS FRAY AND FRIZZ. Want to shave my head at this rate
