Summed up: - Flexibility (WFH, hybrid, what time they work and don't work) - Office space (free food or food gift card if staying late), in-office social events - Assigned seats - A way/path to grow in the company and towards their ambitions (ie. mentorship program) - Promotion criteria (let people know what is required and how long it takes for promotion) - Time for passion projects or do it together

I looked for a WFH job for over a year. They were hesitant to hire cause i never worked from home before. A company finally gave me the chance and hired me. I’m a top performer and always hitting goals and always on time. I’ve gotten 2 raises and only been there for 9 months. We have two 30 minute breaks and hour lunches. I’m not planning on leaving anytime soon. I’m gen z

Gen X here and all of that sounds good to me too. None of us like to be rigidly employed but, unfortunately, that is the reality we face here in the U.S. I find that the majority of employers don't offer flexibility. I hope that Gen Z changes it for ALL of us.

I love working with "Gen Z" , most have high levels of self awareness, and understand respect is a two way street. The Gen Z I have worked with overall display a strong unwillingness to condone current societal hierarchies. Also are not validation seeking or fall for other generational power plays! It is refreshing and empowering to witness this group arriving with high expectations and confidence in putting their "money where their mouth is! Example in 2021, CEOs earned 399 times more than the typical U.S. worker was paid. However do not add 399 times worth of value.

Gen Z are not exactly what You think they are. That's Your experience of them. Most of them are lazy, whiny, insuferable young people, none of them are even 30 yet and most of them don't know what they want, because they didn't even ask who or what they are. Flexible work hours and WFH requires trust from both employers and employees… all new employees, no matter what generation they are from should be required to phase into more and more opportunities for hybrid work over time. This also forces new employees to get to know office culture and personalities faster when starting a new job.

His claims are bold and ideas and nuanced but research supports it. I wish he referenced the research more. Siestas in Spain, Mandated vacation in France and Australia. America shifted out of producing and into strategy, business tactics and engineering. Working smarter. Psychology and physiology are showing us how long form problem solving can be repeated day in and day out. So long as other comforts are afforded to us. Then employer retention booms.

He’s not wrong. To us oldtimers it all may sound odd, but we are seeing these changes happening on the employer side. Because in the end they simply need a work force. In the end the customer will pay the difference that may increase cost on the production side if the employer has a lower productivity output per employee. So all is good, it’s change, and change is normal, and it fuels innovation. As long as humans are still needed to do work, this is a repeating cycle. „Offering free food“ may sound cute to us Gen X‘ers, but ok, if that’s the new mindset and demand, let’s look into it. Whatever it costs, we‘ll just put the difference on our sales price. It’s really interesting to listen to someone from this generation. Because to realize these needs or preferences is just very hard for a generation that in the end leads a completely different life with completely different centers of gravity. Just like our parents and grandparents generations had a different focus.

I'm hesitant about these demands when the receiver provides different demands. I disagree because, when all these are offered, most people either do not show up or do not want to participate. The customer needs better customer service. You go to any store, and no one can help you, or they bother when you ask a question because it is more important to text or watch videos than to work. The question should be to the workers....Am I doing a good job or providing good customer service?

All in all gen Z want to work by their OWN individual and personal schedule. Which can be good for their own productivity but it has it's own faults as well.... Because companies needs team work. And if someone works individually there is no team. We need to be more diciplined and find more relevant yet satisfying schedules for them. Gen Z seems like a healing stage with demands that doesn't go with the overall financial status anf work fulfillment. Ps: just what I can make out of my experience.

Humans are 'nest builders', hot desking doesn't benefit anyone except the people who have to pay for desk space. There are so many reasons why having a fixed desk is better. There are other ways to create flexible physical workspaces. For office workers who have just spent the last couple of years working in spaces they control again, they are well aware of the benefits of a fixed desk, and that's not just Gen-Z workers, that's workers of all ages.

Gen Z went through the pandemic and realized wow what an amazing time. Masks to cover my social anxiety! WFH to cover my inability to have in person experiences. @tylerwerthmuller2005

It's not just that. It's that what many employers offer simply isn't enough to live a standard life. Living thrifty and with much frugality paycheck to paycheck isn't normal, that's not on the employee to figure out, that's on the employer to treat them like they're a human being. My grandparents and parents tell me what work was like for them, they weren't treated like robots, yet Gen Z is treated like robots every single time we step into an office and are forced to stay there. So it's not that we are young and know better, we actually do know better, but in the sense of knowing when things were better for everyone, regardless of their age.
@GGoAwayy
@GGoAwayy Жыл бұрын
@@tylerwerthmuller2005 No. It's a generational thing. I was working at a company where Gen Z new hires were starting at over $100k, plus generous stock grants, plus basically ALL of the things suggested in this ted talk... and they still whined about everything. It is a work ethic thing. They do not have it in them to just put in the work before demanding perks. It's pure entitlement. Gen Z in the office is the "waste time chatting on Slack all day" generation.

@@GGoAwayy sure, there might be a few bad eggs in there. I can definitely see that many are just entitled even if they have enough. I know many hard working Gen Z employees, in fact they learn faster and work harder than many gen x or boomer employees. So again, maybe it's the treatment like a robot and not a human being. It's not necessarily what the job offers in terms of how it benefits life, it's what the job is like when you're working it too. That goes for everyone, nobody wants to stay at a job where overtime is continually mandatory when you have a lot going on in life, we are human after all.

This is nothing new. I'm Gen X and we've been treating our multi-generational work force in this way for years. The difference with Gen Z is the lack of stamina, the lack of grit when the work gets tough and the constant look for dropping accountability and responsibility as they want as easy life as possible. Not to mention the entitlement, no matter what you're offering and giving, they believe they're entitled to more. I'm more than keen to train up the next generation as it helps to bring in a more diverse and inclusive work culture and it also helps with long-term growth, development and planning. But they need to remember they are employed to deliver a service not just because the employer is feeling benevolent!

Employment is a contract between a company and an individual (even if it's at will). The employer will provide a set of compensation in exchange for the employee's promise to perform a set of tasks during a certain period of time. If you want to sleep in - find an employer with acceptable hours to your liking. If you want an employer to be your mom and bake cookies for you - go work for Nabisco. The entire purpose of currency is to allow people to store the transfer of your time and assets into a tradable form. The more complex and personalized a system becomes to "barter" an employment contract, the less like the employment will last. I believe that the new employee workforce needs to accept that compromises will need to be made just as much as companies need to realize that you cannot monopolize the majority of an employee's time. The direction of this Ted talk seems to be a very professional delivery of an unprofessional subject.

Move over millenials is a terrible way to start your presentation when the millenials just aged into the part of their lives when they can start to fix the things you are complaining about. As if millenials caused this or want to continue it. Try waiting for them to fix it before you decide it's your turn.

Young people with little to no experience trying to tell the employer how to run the company. This way of thinking is very on brand actually 😂. This is nothing new when it comes to people in their early 20s and think they know everything. I have a better idea. Outperform your peers in order to earn a top level position so you can make those decisions. Until then, decide whether you want a paycheck or not. You're always free to seek something more suitable to your entitlements. You might run out of options but, good luck.

Dear mr orator...you really can't serious in thinking this is only Gen Z needs? Also, you don't own a business, it can be easily proven you lack experience handling a firm. You must be the mindset that the only jobs you can find are huge corporations. Really? Just turn around and see how many are small/medium business. It's really "that easy' just to give foood everyday, beside the fix costs to keep a business. Gotta burst your bubble but a lot of things you mention have high costs! A corporation MIGHT be ok with it. Small business? you must be delusional! All I get from this video is "me me me me" (or we we we we). Such a contribution, if you follow these steps you wll retain Gen Z so they work. Call me crazy, but isn't that implied that you as an employeer ask someone to actually...WORK? Employeer trades money for employees skills and time. This ain't new.

Hmmm..you seem to talk too much about "flexibility" - if Zoomers don't like to remain with companies that dictate how they should work (simply because every company has their OWN CULTURE) - that's lack of flexibility in itself. If zoomers don't want to adjust to what Reality offers them for the sake of survival - that IS lack of flexibility. What's happening here is that zoomers want Reality to adjust to them - they want everyone to be flexible for them - while the zoomers themselves don't want to be flexible and make necessary adjustments to their psychology and sociology. These challenges that Reality provide are meant for humans to learn and make better versions of themselves. Zoomers just want to rot in themselves...while the rest of the world goes on with life. The world and Reality aren't here to pamper you, narcissists...
