I've been watching your channel for a couple years and I wasn't a Tesla fanboy, I'm not a car guy, I like the s*** talking that you used to do the beginning of episodes. Anyway, I thought about why I continue to watch your channel and what it is that really keeps pulling me in. Is that the whole market of how electric vehicles and gas vehicles has changed over the last couple years is why I keep watching. You were going through this paradigm shift in real time and you keep asking the question about is this vehicle worth it? Now maybe you do have some sort of addiction to buying new vehicles and doing new things. But your KZbin channel demands that and I think that's a fine way to spend your money in time. But the thing is you always talk about the rang anxiety which is something that I don't think. I heard the word rang anxiety before 2009 when one of my teachers bought a Nissan leaf. There is something really specific about the depth of what is going on in this changing market that I really think you're evaluating in a way that none of the advertisement does. Like you said about the cyber truck, do you think that they're actually going to show the cyber truck losing on marketing material? I don't think so. I wasn't interested in the rivian in any way before it came out but you did show what it is capable of. No longer is the cult of new the thing that matters because there is this eclectic style going on between a channel where you're using electric pickup truck to go get a Humvee because you're working on other cars and you need something to move stuff around with. It's literally a practical move with everything. Anyway, I love your channel. I love how I'm interested in something that you are doing specifically in a topic I don't care about

Get a tesla, and you won't have problems. Get another EV, problems galore. Get an ICE vehicle, fewer problems over all until you have to maintain it and ohh yeah, fill it up with fuel. If you're gonna drive 30,000 miles per year and or pull a trailer for 10,000 miles a year.... go get a 3/4 or 1 ton diesel. If you're gonna run around town, go to work, pick up the kids and get groceries, then make one of your household's vehicles a Tesla. If you're going to take a bunch of roadtrips than maybe make the other decent sized SUV or 4 door truck. People think it has to be 100% EVs or nothing. Thats crap. It makes sense for Uncle Sam to provide Tax incentives to keep EV development in the US so we can profit from it, but MANDATING EV adoption.... thats idiotic. Let people who want EVs buy them and people who don't want them or who legitimately need gas/diesel keep buying those. Those batteries weigh hundreds of pounds, which would exceed the vehicle payload, reduce towing capacity, and the extra weight would further reduce range. You demonstrated why I put a power trailer jack on my camper once I started towing with my Tesla Model X. My last trip I had to unhitch and re-hitch 5 times each way for charging. And even more frustrating is that two of the stations had a single spot that could accommodate a trailer and both times it was taken by someone without a trailer, and there were plenty of other spots available. On huge advantage Rivian has is that charging port is in the front. Much better chances to be able to not need to unhitch with a Rivian since you never have the need to back into most chargers. Of course, I've never had to unhitch a trailer to fuel my ICE truck. I love my electric and yet there is still huge opportunities for improvements.

The EV charging companies know how to charge ($$$): they set the price to be almost exactly as much as gasoline would cost locally for an equivalent gasoline vehicle. I calculated this for my R1T in Southern California: they charge 69¢/kWh for >150kW charging, which for 2miles/kWh works out to be the same $/mile as a 17mpg gasoline truck. But at home I charge mine off solar, so it costs literally nothing - so long as I don’t drive more than 30 miles per day on average. Otherwise the EV charging plans from SDG&E cost 14¢/kWh here.

Only if you’re doing a lot of long distance driving. I’ve had one for 5 years now, I’ve charged at home the entire time except twice. Not having to ever stop at the gas station is nice and a time saver.

i notice that every rivian i see out in the wild has their headlights on, even in the middle of the day - is this standard operating procedure (IE, "daytime running lights" that are always on) or do the headlights shut themselves off even if left in the "on" position when the vehicle is shut off? i doubt that there is much effect on range with the lights being on all the time, but in terms of visibility - it does make it harder to see when someone with a rivian (or any car for that matter with their headlights on during the day) is applying their brakes. it's a constant pet peeve of mine whenever i see someone with their headlights on during the day.
@ian3580 Жыл бұрын
There's a pretty big difference in brightness between 'parking lights' and brake lights. I have never seen any vehicle where having lights on during the day made it harder to tell if their brakes were applied or not.

If you want a TRUCK, the Rivian is the choice between the two. It did really well on the tow. If you want Tesla Tech then the CT wins. I like your breakdown of the Tesla vs Porsche "drag race". Classic case of the use of propoga... uh... slick , weighted brand advertising. Try to tell the CT tribe those things and they become unhinged. It would be surprising if Tesla took up your challenge... but interesting. C'mon man, don't go Musk on us... give us the times.

I can see how range anxiety could exist when you drive this much. Most of the people I know live and survive exclusively in the city, and very, very rarely go more than 50km to any destination and back for any given event. A lot of people don't go more than 20km from home basically ever. If this is you, an EV is a dream, and even renting an Ice vehicle for the one or two days a year that you drive more than an hour in any direction makes sense. For me personally, having a car at all is overkill. I bicycle everywhere I need to go, get shopping, work and back, etc since everything I need is within 5km of home, I use the bus three or four times a year when I have to go 20km and an uber or carpool the 3 or 4 times a year I have to go more than 50km from home.

I live in an African country, and I do not, in fact, live in the Hood. I live in a very nice HOA complex on a small island in the middle of the city, 5km from the nearest beach, next to another island which is a nature reserve and an 8 minute walk to a pretty big mall. I have very reliable bus service every 15 minutes from the bus station 300m from my islands bridge to every other part of the city. However, my neighbourhood is extremely well supplied with bicycle lanes, walking paths along the canals, hiking paths and all the nearby businesses cater to cyclists, canoe enthusiasts, people jogging with their pets and other health/environmentally conscious citizens. The HOA and the neighbourhood organisations are very active in encouraging this and supplying/maintaining the local infrastructure to a very high standard, for which everyone is basically happy to treat HOA and neighbourhood organisations as another layer of government and pay the fees that are basically more super-local taxes to maintain this.

Thanks, Rich, I always enjoy your videos. I am with you, the Cybertruck is cool, but I wouldn't buy one. In fact, I would not buy any type of EV pickup given the range anxiety it would cause me when towing. Someday, when someone makes a significant range extending battery breakthrough that will give us an EV that gives us the convenience of an ICE vehicle, then the transition to an EV will be easy. Nevertheless, the world does need to move away from oil and gas. EVs are the way forward, but for most of us, not yet.
@gohkairen2980 Жыл бұрын
tesla cybertruck does sell a range extender, making it close to 500 miles of range which is more than enough for towing.
@ferfromla Жыл бұрын
You are correct, but it will cost $16k more and take up half of the truck bed. Again the need for a real battery break-through that comes with the convenience of a gas pump.

I had wondered how it was possible a weighed down Cybertruck could beat a Porsche in a drag race. I guess I'd forgotten two important aspects, 1.) Tesla would use the slowest possible Porsche they could in order to allow the Cybertruck+trailer to win the drag race, and there are a lot of low trim Porsche's out there that don't have the power to beat a Cybertruck because they aren't intended for drag racing.

Rich, although you spend lavishly on a lot of things that "don't make sense" financially, ecologically, or aesthetically, I'm actually glad you're sticking with the Rivian R1T over the Cybertruck. No reason to switch! I think that some You Tube boys who own a Tesla each, have a backup Leaf, and then have a Rivian, and a Lightning they don't drive ("so we can do a 4 way shootout once we get Cybertruck and e-Silverado" they say), should take the financial hit to sell those vehicles to a second owner, who will beat them up properly as work trucks, and/or put the next 80k-150k miles on those trucks instead of them just sitting around.

To be honest, in relation to the Cybertruck drag race, there is no doubt that Tesla picked a model of the 911 and a race format that they knew they could win in (let's face it, they're not going to promote their product by showing it losing a race) but I'm not sure it really matters much - the fact that a pickup truck can beat any factory spec of a Porsche 911 in any commonly run drag race format, whilst towing that same model is insane. It's also worth noting that the Porsche they picked is the closest in price to the Cybertruck (but is still much more expensive). If the driver of the Porsche sandbagged and didn't change as quickly as they could/apply 100% throttle etc. then that's a different story because it's dishonest rather than just setting up a race in their favour. Will be interesting to see what happens when people start running their own tests. The Porsche Carrera T does a 4.0 second 0-60 and a 12.2 second 1/4 mile, so I can believe that the Cybertruck (running 2.6 seconds to 60 and an 11.2 second 1/4, will beat the Porsche to the 1/8 mile while towing). Put another way, is there another pickup that could do this? If yes, then it's not especially impressive, but I'm not sure that it would. Obviously other, faster Porsches (including yours, which I think runs about 2.9 to 60mph?) will beat the Cybertruck if the Cybertruck is towing, but they should do!

always depends most on the driving profile and charging option in your area! Personally, I've been to a supercharger with the company Tesla maybe 10 times in 3 years. If I want, I can always start with 100% SoC and one charge is usually enough for my normal job routes. Just traveling requires one or 2 short extra stops. Calculated over the course of a year, I save myself over 10 hours of filling up the gas car, but the duration of the 4 charging stops per year is much shorter - I drive around 15,000 mi per year.

@32:00 While I agree that one might not want to take a depreciation hit selling their gently used EV just to get a new EV like the Cybertruck, I don't agree with the reasoning mentioned here that it isn't green or sustainable to do so. It really makes no difference. If you sell the Rivian it goes on to another owner and will live out its lifecycle regardless of who the owner is or how many owner's hands it is passed through. In fact it might speed up the process of lowering emissions because there might be someone who can't afford a new EV truck, are holding onto their ICE truck until they can afford and EV, and might buy your depreciated gently used EV truck because it's a good deal. So the real reason to not sell the Rivian is really a practical financial one which is really valid. But not any concern over it being less sustainable.
