The 30-06 was literally the very first centerfire rifle I ever shot as a child. I think I was about 9 years old the first time I shot my dad's Savage '06 and took my first deer with it the next year. I have that rifle now and still use and reload for it. Funny how a video can bring back such fond memories!

I might be able to top that! In 1959 I was 6 years old. My dad bought my brother and I a pair of surplus .30 Carbines. He had a very nice new M-1 Garand and we used to shoot at the old Little Tujunga Canyon 100 yard rifle range, just North of Los Angeles. We put lots of rounds down range and shot every 2-3 weekends. Every so often he would let me shoot the Garand while I laid prone on top of the shooting bench. I weighed 45 pounds. Yes, it kicked. I would be sore for the whole next day. I loved it. We shot surplus corrosive ammo and had to strip the guns run brushes and patches through with Hoppe's #9 until pop was satisfied. I got really good with his 30:06. A lot of other shooters used to watch me. We had an act going on. He would pretend to show me how to load it, like I never fired it before. There were a lot of WWII and Korea Vets there and someone would say ''You're not going to let that kid shoot it, are you?'' Pop would get some guy to spot my hits with the spotting scope and call them out. And almost every time, I would get all 8 in the black at 100 yards with iron sights. It was such a fun thing to do and the Veterans were completely impressed. And I never got Garand thumb. He bought ammo from a Marine friend at Pendleton who was involved in dumping old ammo off a barge into the ocean. The guy came over with his Chevy sagging because the trunk was so full of ammo... 30:06 in bandoliers and .30 carbine in Spam cans, inset bazooka training rounds, lots of cool stuff. Pop paid a penny a round. Some of it was AP ammo. We got a few belts of 50 cal as well. Those were good times. I had a gun rack with the carbine on my bedroom wall and my sock drawer full of live ammo, mags, even Pop's 8mm Mauser that he paid $15 for. I shot that one as well but it still had the steel butt plate and that thing hurt when I fired it. Pop had a rubber recoil pad on the Garand. The Russian Moisan Nagant kicked like hell as well and I didn't like it, either. Pop trained us well. I'm 70 now. We went hunting...but it was more like armed hiking. He said that we had to gut and clean anything we shot. Its still not my cup of tea....

A lot of us had grandpas who carried a 30-06 M1 rifle in WW2. So grandpa swore by 30-06. Then that got passed on to our Dads and Dad grew up with 30-06 deer rifles. When it came time for us to get a " big boy" rifle...guess what...its 30-06 lol 😂. So a lot of us simply love and use 30-06 simply as a matter of tradition. Just one of those things. I dont really care what could be better for this and that...30-06 just puts a smile on my face 😊. And at the end of the day thats what its really all about...smiles 😊😊

I was 12 and my Dad brought home a Mauser K98 that was customized (very lose definition of customized) and chambered in 30-06. He got it from a dusty rack in a gun store. I was thrilled. I learned reloading so I could feed the rifle. I brought home all manner of game. I did replace the trigger, stock, and drilled and tapped it for scope bases but that was in my 40s. Since then, that gun stayed the same, minus the scope. I did install a Leupold 3-9x40 scope, and retired the old Redfield 6x (still works) I bought third hand long ago. I'm 65 now. I still use that gun. I taught my kids to hunt using that gun. Made a kid load using H4895, a Hornady 150RN 30-30 bullet, doing 2400fps. That gun is a meat delivery system. It keeps wild hog meat in the freezer at all times. If the barrel ever fades, I will put a new one on, 24", same as it is now. I have other rifles, but they cannot take the place of this one. My Dad gave it to me. It is special....to me. Sure it was old when I got it, but to me it was not.

I had a 12ga shot gun and a .22 when I was 10 but my first high powered rifle was a surplus .303 British Enfield rifle that my dad bought me when I was about 13 years old. He got it for about a $100 in 1992 and that thing shot good. I remember being able to shoot clay targets off of a pole at 100 yards pretty much every shot with the peep sights that it came with. I sold it to my friend for $250 dollars when I was around 19-20 mostly because he kept bugging me about it because he collected old military rifles and memorabilia and by then I had many rifles anyway. My friend still has that rifle to this day and has never shot it.

When I hunted with my dad, we always looked to be at less than 200 yards. We hunted in the Northern Sierra Nevada, and anything beyond that range was unlikely to be visible unless it was on the far side of a canyon. Even 200 yards is not than common a range. Too many trees and brush. My dad used his '06, and I used a Winchester '94 .30-30 lever action.

Yeah 308 and 30-06 (and 6,5x55mm Swedish which is an underrated caliber) are the most common calibers here in Sweden, for a good reason. 308 is good enough for most things, and the hunter I know uses it for moose aswell and he only takes ethical, clean kill shots. 30-06 has what I saw someone else describe as "the highest recoil before recoil becomes a problem" pretty much. It kicks but it has more power and is safer to use against moose. That hunter uses 308 with a straight pull bolt action and a red dot aswell so his "strategy" is pretty much one good shot and then 1-2 quick followup shots if it doesn't look like it's gonna drop like a sack. I could be mistaken but isn't 30-06 second to 308 internationally aswell? Both are very good calibers but 308 is more suited for combat and 30-06 might be better as a moose gun.

Becoming less popular by the day its seems like though. I think those computers and chronographs are not working in its favor. Cartridges like 6.5prc and 6.5 Creedmoor are taking its place on the hunting fields due to less recoil amd better ballistics. By the way I own a 30-06 x-bolt, bit I think it's just times moving forward
@Rickarrish
@Rickarrish Жыл бұрын
@@actualevents4621it's succumbing to marketing. The funny thing about ballistic coefficient is that while it's relative to diameter it's also a function of overall weight. Heavier longer bullets = higher BC. There's nothing a 140 gr 6.5 creedmore can do that a 190 gr 30-06 can't do just as well if not better... except recoil your shoulder will definitely thank you for using a 6.5.
@Rickarrish
@Rickarrish Жыл бұрын
The 30-06 of 1906 wouldn't hold a candle to anything modern today. On release the cartridge was only a 1700 FPS 150 grain rifle, a modern one is about 1000 FPS faster at a similar grain weight, which is actually about 2.5 times more energy than the original. Computers weren't the make or break of modern firearms over the years, smokeless powders, and modern metallurgy are what have kept the 30-06 relevant and pushed the industry forward.
@actualevents4621
@actualevents4621 Жыл бұрын
@Rickarrish I have to disagree with you there. Although I'm partial to 30-06 my self, and will keep it as my only larger hunting round for foreseeable years, I know that it's just a fact that 6.5 Creedmoor actual hunting ammo will have less drop and retain more energy anywhere past 100 yards. 30-06 will leave the mussel faster, but at 100 yards, 6.5 Creedmoor will already be faster, and the farther they go, the flater and faster 6.5 will be. It's not surprising. The 6.5 was developed 100 years later using technology that was not available back when 30-06 was developed. Still, the differences are minor, which is a testament to how great 30-06 was developed, not having the tools engineering has today. But if one is buying into the new round to keep for many years, I would think those points would be important to consider.

Most people talking trash about the 30-06 at 1000 yards... could never hit anything in the field at that range anyway. Most couldn't consistently hit anything above 300 yards without a dead solid bench rest with bags front and rear. Many of those couldn't hit anything at that range WITH bags. For SANE hunting distances, the larger .308" is a benefit, not a detriment. As has been said in a parallel argument, a 9mm 'might' expand, but a .45 ain't gonna' shrink! lol

I've been hand loading since 1984 and have 30-06 and a 308. I think you are spot on with your analysis and ballistic knowledge. Yes, 30 cal is very versatile, but you are right as to how 6 and 7mm bullets retain speed and "flatness" at further distances due to the higher ballistic coefficient. That said, for all practical purposes, the 06 can really do it all. Well done !

Both have killed well, both are accurate & suited to this job out to 500+ yards which is as far as I would shoot a big critter like this but I have fallen in love with the 30-06. The recoil is much less than the 270, the vast array of loads & weights means it is very versatile & since getting a trigger job on the BLR the rifle is now super accurate. Last season I took a 358yd, 1100lb bull with a singe shot to the boiler & he dropped where I shot him. One of the reasons I bought my 30-06 all the way back in 1984 was that not only could I take white tails out to 350-400 yds I could get the Remington Accelerator at 55gr and almost 4000 fps second for groundhogs. Good out to 250 yds so not a .220 swift, but super deadly. For our 100 acre farm the first year in 84 still has single season highest tally at 24 hogs. All this and I had to buy only 1 gun.

First and only rifle I’ve ever purchased…Winchester model 670 in ‘06. One time I shot a running doe at 350 yards. My son and daughter were there to watch their dad get meat on the ground. Cool thing was it landed 50 yds from the truck. All three of our kids became hunter-gatherers and I’m proud to see their kids becoming the same. I will always be thankful for the advice to go with such a dependable rifle. I reloaded with my step-dad and we loved the 165gr boat-tail for deer and elk in Montana. But my favorite solo hunt with a reload was a lighter 135 grain for antelope. I shot my buck at 30 yards as he was running towards me. What a thrilling experience. This multi-purpose and very versatile rifle is ideal for the guy who just wants to hunt with a reliable and consistent weapon. Kicks hard with the original metal plate but all I remember after the animal falls is the joy of a successful hunt.

Here north Eastern Vermont the 30-06 is one of the most popular cartridges. My father always talked it up to versus a lot of it's competition (270win, 308win, 7mm-08 Rem, 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag) 7 shots 7 recoveries with 30-06. 6 whitetail and 1 black bear. So far it's served as a stellar hunting load. I have been fond of the 165gr Nosler Partition. He for some odd reason really likes the 220gr RN loads.

Greetings from Plymouth New Hampshire almost the geographic center of this wonderful state. I'm with you on the 30 ought 6. It will get everything done in these mountains without fail. I shoot competitively and I've been hunting all my life with 150 and 180 grain cartridges. It maintains velocity and kinetic knockdown power upwards of thirteen hundred yards. I've seen it with my own two eyes I mean we annihilate wooden targets at those distances. And I mean there's nothing that walks in New England or anywhere in or around the North American continent that a 30 ought 6 will not drop with one well-placed shot. If its balance and power. It gets it done it's been proven on the battlefield and hunting and competitively globally for a very long time. So many people say it's too much The recoil is awful blah blah blah. Well yeah that's not true. You can get as light as a 55 grain cartridge I mean we're talkin 4,000 ft per second. Or on the heavy end I think it's 220 grain coming out right around twenty-four to twenty-six hundred feet per second. I mean no matter how you look at it... It is the all-around best realistic rifle cartridge that will get the job done 100% of the time so long as you have the skills. A buddy of mine started competitive shooting with me and he just had to go out and buy a 338 Lapua thinking he was going to give him some huge advantage at the thousand-yard Mark. Well it didn't. He can't hit shit at 1000 yards he's lucky to hit a 36-inch Target at five hundred yards on a good day with no wind. He had to learn the hard way and I think it's hilarious. And I'm pretty sure that you know as well as I do that in this area of the country when it comes to hunting you're probably not going to take anything more than a 200-yard shot and that's pushing it. There are sometimes when that happens but it is very rare. I've never in my entire life with all the hunting trips I've been on never have I shot anyting more than 175 yards away. I mean I see creatures at greater distances but the way the mountains are with these thick forest... Yeah you can forget about that. in another topic that is gun-related I hear that Vermont is putting restrictions or has put restrictions on magazine capacity. Is that true? I mean damn here in New Hampshire we used to follow the example set by Vermont when it came to the gold standard for civilian firearm ownership but I guess we have surpassed you folks. That's a shame. I've always loved the leniency and lack of bulshit restrictions throughout the tri-state area of Vermont and hearing New Hampshire and in Maine. Leave that communist dictator bullshit to the rest of New England... You know what I mean that armpit known as Rhode Island the shit hole known as Massachusetts and the very confused state of Connecticut. Anyway stay safe out there and happy hunting.

Definitely enjoyed your video. Now my comments. First my demographics, l am a 73 year old retired US ARMY NCO, I have been shooting and collecting guns for over 60 rears. My feeling is if you are going to have only one centerfire rifle, there is no better option than the 30/06. As stated it is capable of harvesting any North American game animal and has successfully been used to harvest just about every animal currently walking this planet. If your needs change over several years the 30/06 can adapt. If like me you have more guns than you can ever need then the 30/06 should definitely be one of them. As to performance at extreme ranges. I believe the number of shooters that can actually be effective at extreme long ranges, for argument sake let's say over 500 yards. Is a small percentage of shooters. And the number of shooters that should even contemplate an extreme long range shot on any game animal is even smaller. Does that mean I think the average or below shooter shouldn't strive to aquire the skills to shoot at long ranges? No ithink every shooter owes it to themselves to constantly strive to be a better shooter today than they were yesterday. But be honest with yourself and don't take shots at game you don't have the skill to make. If a military sniper takes an extreme long range shot at an enemy soldier and only wounds that soldier, it's still a good result. If a hunter takes a shot at an animal that is beyond their skill level and they only wound that animal it is a very serious violation of hunting ethics. So while the theoretical ballistics of different cartridges is interesting. The majority of shooters (and I include myself in this group) are not capable of taking advantage of that data. Personally I am of the opinion that you can never have too many guns or too many calibers in your collection. I can't even begin to tell you how many of the guns in my collection are guns that I desperately didn'tneed, but couldn't live without.

A Browning 783 in 308. The Browning has a custom trigger and a thumb hole stock. My go-to gun is a Ruger M77 MkII in 30-06. It also has a thumb hole stock that's an inch over standard LOP (I'm 6'3"). It has 6 x 24 power scope and a custom trigger. The thumb hole stocks take up a lot of the recoil and put your hand in a better shooting position, I believe.

I have both .308s and 30-06s in my gun collection. I always laugh at people who point out how some calibers with smaller diameter bullets carry more energy out farther, drop less etc. The truth is the old 06 will get her done out farther than anyone has any business shooting at a game animal. So what if a 6.5 has more energy at 1000 yards. How much energy does it take to punch through a piece of paper.

I don't have one because I chose the 308. There are two disclaimers that everyone misses when comparing them. The 30-06 is usually calculated in a 24" or 25" barrel, while the 308 is usually calculated on a 22" barrel. If an inch is worth 30 fps then 3" = 90 fps. The issue comes when you chamber both in a 20" barrel. Since the barrel length includes the clambering, a 308 (2.015" case) will have about 18" of rifling while the 30-06 (2.4941" case) will only have 17.6" of rifled barrel. This is where a 308 can actually outperform a 30-06.
@Boomhower89
@Boomhower89 Жыл бұрын
Anything a 308 can do a 30-06 will do slightly better. Own several rifles in both chambers. Is the 30-06 enough better to make much difference? Nope. A great round you don’t see on this side of the world is a 7x 64 mm. Extremely flat shooting. But hunting in woods a 30-30 is still better than either imo, and a 45/70 even better than the 30-30. Back to the 308 and 30-06 if you are reloading you can fit even more powder in the 30-06. But then again opinions are like bungholes. Everyone has one. Shoot with what makes you happy.
@fabulousoffroaddesigns5080
@fabulousoffroaddesigns5080 Жыл бұрын
@@Boomhower89 that is simply not true, not "anything." In a bolt action rifle shorter then 40" the 308 has more power for exactly the reasons I've explained above. They can both be hand loaded to the same pressures, the 30-06 just has the capacity to push the bullet further down a longer barrel to gain that extra speed. In a short barrel it releases all its power outside the barrel in a 2 foot flash. So if you want a handy size rifle the 308 🏆wins. More energy, more velocity, meaning more power at every distance, less muzzle blast, less kick, better follow up, and the action is lighter. Now if you don't mind a 4 foot long rifle, the 30-06 is better then a 308. The problem is a 35 Whelen beats the 30-06 at everything. So if you have a 35 W, why would you want a 30-06?
@Boomhower89
@Boomhower89 Жыл бұрын
@@fabulousoffroaddesigns5080 I don’t have a 35 Whelen. I have several of both rifles that shoot 30-06 and 308. Take two for instance. A Winchester 1895 model made by Browning shoots a 30-06. I have a BLR in 308. The 30-06 is a longer shell and can hold more powder. I shoot stock ammo but the 30-06 will shoot faster than the 308. If you add a barrel length on the 308 than yes it will catch up with the 30-06. The small difference in chamber will not overcome the higher chamber pressure provided by the 30-06 in equal length rifles. Will either take down anything in North America with a well placed shot? Then yes. You can’t make something more dead by adding more power but that doesn’t make the shells equal in power. But I digress 308s are great rounds as are several others. Use what you like but the facts don’t change.
@fabulousoffroaddesigns5080
@fabulousoffroaddesigns5080 Жыл бұрын
@@Boomhower89 but you are wrong on two things here. Firstly they have basically the exact same chamber pressures today. When the 308 came out it had slightly higher pressures then the ThirtyOT6. Secondly in long barrels the 308 will never catch the 30-06, but in barrels 20" or less the 308 does, will, and will always outperform the 30-06. It is just like a 1/4 Mile race with Two identical cars with identical power but one starts 0.4" ahead of the other but only has enough gas to push the car 5260 feet. He wins the reaction time, he is winning at the 1/8th mile, he wins the standing kilometer, but he will lose the 1/4 mile race by a nose because he lost power 20 feet before the line. That is the story of the 30's. It just has the "gas" to push right to the end of a long barrel.

.308 and 30-06 are both fine cartridges, but Generally I prefer the .308 win. Costs less, uses less powder to load (typically), and in real-world applications it's just as usable in MOST applications. In most instances, if you NEED that performance difference between .308 and 30-06 then you are likely doing something special. With today's world where ammo pricing and availability are always in question? I tend to lean toward the cheaper and more readily available cartridge that will get the job done. So my primes are: 22lr, 9mm, .223 and .308.

I live and hunt in Colorado. My first hunting rifle was a Tikka stainless ultralight in .30-06. I'm kinda disappointed in my choice because I don't really have a good reason to buy a different caliber rifle to hunt with. 125 gr. for antelope, 165 gr. for deer and elk, 180 gr. for moose. I buy ammo right after the season is over, and usually find what I want for $20.00-$30.00 a box. I'm 70 now, and probably have a lifetime of ammo saved up.

My question is how often do you take shots on game beyond 400 yards? Where I live people hunt large game with shotguns or 30-30s. I know you have longer shots out west, but, some people use the 45-70 (a 100-200 yard gun) to hunt out there and still get game. So my point is: use what works for you.

I got a Savage 110 30-06 on my 16th birthday.. got a Marlin 22 when I was 10 got a 12 gauge Mossberg when I was 12. It's like that in South Carolina if you didn't have your Shotgun by the time you were 12 that meant you we're not responsible with your bb gun before then why can't America be that way still?? I grew up with firearms always used it for hunting and Sport

some experts like to say that there is no such thing as stopping power, but correct me if I'm wrong, I think you unintentionally created a test that demonstrates stopping power and penetration. the steel flip being the demonstration of stopping power and the craters demonstrating penetration. this was awesome!

I have two 30-06's. I hand load with 180 gr. pro hunter bullets. I used a 2 foot by 4 foot piece of cardboard and measured bullet drop at each distance out to six hundred yards and taped a dope card to my stock. This cartridge never fails to hit where I aim. Great video. Nuff said.

I bought my youngest son a Ruger mark 2 left handed in 06 many years ago, loaded it down so he could handle the recoil. It was a shooter for sure. I hope he still has it, he doesn't talk to me anymore, I'm too conservative. Life doesn't always turn out like we hoped and planned, but I pray for him regularly. Some hurts never heal.

When you include cast bullets, the choices in loads increase that much more. One could even create garden loads using a 22lr case full of Bullseye powder in the 30-06 case and jamming a #1 buckshot ball in the case mouth. That may work for short-range (back yard) work, but useless for any considerable distance. As far as long-range shooting the 30-06, a light-for-caliber bullet (150 grains or less) will not have enough BC to sustain velocity over a long distance. While a heavier bullet (180-200+) may start out at a lower velocity than a lighter bullet, the greater BC will keep the momentum of the bullet better, leading to a slower drop in velocity. A heavy bullet in a certain caliber will not lose velocity as fast as a light bullet. A 200-grain 30-cal bullet would have similar ballistics as a 160-grain 6.5mm bullet, if my memory serves me well. While I'm referring to BC (ballistic coefficient), I'm including sectional density, but the profile of the bullet also comes into play, hence BC. While a 220-grain 30-cal round-nose bullet has excellent sectional density, the BC is lower than a similar weight of a spitzer profile. A high BC is more aerodynamic. And you are spot-on about the 308 and 30-06 being essentially identical with bullet weights up to 165 grains, and if you are shooting bullet weights in that range, then owning both calibers would be pretty much redundant, although one would argue that the shorter action in a 308 rifle has advantages over the longer action of a 30/06 rifle (lower weight, stiffer action, etc.).

Mine is from that era as well. A Remington 721 that I've been using for 30 years now. This year it flew to my shoulder, seemingly of its own volition, and rolled a running buck just as clean as you please. It's been wearing the same Burris with Lee Dot reticle all these years. That deer was roughly it's 105th.

There are good reasons why the .30-06 rifle cartridge and 1911 pistol have endured without equal for over 100 years. The engineers and designers had one task in mind -- saving the Free World from forces of evil. No emphasis on sales, marketing hype, speciality long-range hunting, target shooting or some other desire to sell more rifles. The sole priority was to win at war in the harshest most challenging conditions that humans had ever faced fighting in on foreign soil and continents on beaches, in trenches, jungles and forests against wicked enemy forces. The AR platform emerged from similar needs and over 70 years of development the AR has evolved into one of the most successful fighting implements in the world.

After doing a lot of research, for hunting deer, elk, even bear, the 30-06 looks like a great option and I just purchased the Browning BLR 81 Takedown in 30-06. Availability is awesome, relative price is great, and there are so many choices for cartridges. Very versatile! Talking about shooting at a 1000 yards is kind of pointless unless your into competition shooting. How many hunters can honestly say they have the skills to shoot beyond 500 yards? There are soooo many factors involved in responsible hunting at that range and would take a LOT of study and practice to get to that level.

If you want your 30-06 to hit like a 308 step 200yd back. I load my 30-06 with everything from 60gr & 100gr subsonic rabbit\squirrel loads, up to 220gr full power loads for hogs, I don't need to switch calibers only ammo.

@@bananaballistics I'm gonna have to dig up the old recipe. It was a 60gr xtp projectile pulled from Hornady custom 32 auto, and something like 5gr of Hi-Skor 700-X, in a 30-06 case. Your pressure curve may vary depending on your chamber, and barrel conditions. Also you need to keep an eye out for squibs because you're going to be riding that line if you want subsonic projectiles, then dial the powder charge depending on the speed you want, I try to load mine between 900-1000fps
@linkbond08
@linkbond08 Жыл бұрын
Nowadays I just use commercially available Hornady 90 grain xtp projectiles from Midway USA because they are way easier to find. Edit: I realize that that is A LOT of bullet for a squirrel, but the same load covers varmints up to raccoons, also you can step up the speed and use it on coyotes. as well.
