On this episode of Ultimate Barrier Testing, we compare the performance of 7mm PRC, 7mm Rem Mag and 280 Rem on 4 different targets. Each target is worth 25 points, for a grand total of 100 points. Whichever cartridge ends up with the highest score will be the winner. Testing was setup at 50 yards. Steel is A529 grade 55 mild steel. 1 inch = 25.4 mm. Thanks for watching!

IDEA: It might, I say might, be interesting to wrap the cement slabs with kitchen Saran wrap. Think about it for a second. You could wrap a few layers around the blocks and it might stay together as it is pretty tough stuff. You could then cut the wrap open to see the destruction, i.e. which round pulverized more of the material. The way you´re doing it now is OK for the splatter effect but some of these rounds makes it impossible to see what type of damage was done. Food for thought.

Glad to see the 280 Remington. I had a custom bolt action made in this caliber in 1999. The gunsmith who made it really made a shooter!! If I do my part, it can do .50 inch groups. Sometimes smaller. Has accounted for quite a few deer. Will be taking it out this year, again!!!

I've had a Ruger 77 in the .280 Remington with a heavy target barrel since 1987, I've had it rebarrelled 6 years ago with a stainless steel barrel and it shoots an average of .30" groups at 100 yards.

The 280 Remington is mostly a handloaders' cartridge. You can get some spectacular results by tinkering with bullets and powder choices.

The .308 is an absolute classic and is a very capable cartridge. I don’t consider the.280 or 7mm mag fancy at all. They’ve both been around quite a while. The 7mm PRC on the other hand is pretty unnecessary in my humble opinion. It’s very little more powerful than the 7mm mag and doesn’t require burning a half a tank of gas to find the ammunition for it. 🤷‍♂️

I lived near a golf course that was adjacent to a big wooded area in Columbus Ohio and we had a gang of about 10 deer that would go through our neighborhood at night eating all the flowers and plants in our gardens. If it were legal, I would have taken them out like Bambi's mother. Before living there I thought deer were majestic creatures. Now I realize they are basically giant rats with hooves.

I love the 7mm diameter for rifles. I’ve got a 7mm-08, a 280 and a 7mm Rmag. If I didn’t hand load, I might consider the PRC as it’s likely got more accurate factory loads with its better BC and tighter chamber, but there isn’t enough difference for me to get one at this point. I can stabilize 175’s in my REM mag. Never tried 180’s.

Any comparison of non-magnum 7mm cartridges that doesn't include the .284 Winchester is sorely lacking. A inherently accurate cartridge that can push a 154 gr. bullet to 2,900 fps deserved mention.

the cartridges are so close to each other I think it all depends on the bullet used. Are they identical ?

Same design, different weight due to each cartridge being best suited to different bullet weights. All ELD-X bullet designs, but the .280Rem was shooting 150gr, the 7mag was shooting 162gr, and the 7PRC was shooting 175gr. 7PRC should penetrate more and probably would have on the last test if he hadn't just barely nicked the front of his contraption before he hit the plate. The 2 things that matter most (between the bullets tested) are velocity and sectional density, both of which were highest with the 7PRC load being tested. Raw kinetic energy doesn't matter quite as much when shooting steel, but indirectly relates to both the velocity and weight of a projectile, and since all bullets are the same caliber (.284) and the same design (ELD-X) the higher weight will directly translate to a higher sectional density.

Just wanted to say really enjoy your contact very educated Informational and exciting I have the 280AI and the 7 Mag I choose. Both of them over the 7 p r c With my hand loads in 7 mag Shooting 180 Bergers 3030FPS who needs a prc . With factory loaded ammo with 175 in 7mag and 7Prc has the same velocity . I also have a 7 RUM and a 7mm Norma mag improved . Reloading with 195 gr bullets at 3150-3250 FPS who needs a PRC lol . God bless You and your family and god bless America

All very capable cartridges. Personally I believe those results and many other comparisons could be changed using hand loads and different projectiles. That 1/2" stuff is tuff steel but some of those solids loaded with the right powder and charge weight using real world data could prove better than the factory stuff. Don't get crazy or anything just saying as I look through western load data and Lee data. Me I'm an amateur and ain't got all the calibers to do the kinda testn like you. Thank God for that. I couldn't take the pressure. So thank you very much for sacrificeing your sanity for all of us and possibly your safety. And if you would quit injecting poor teri with lead and copper vitamin supplements he might not have bulked up as much. Lol. No seriously deliriously.

7 Prc is sweet for those long, heavy bullets. 7 Rem Mag is a staple of 7mms. My stepfather has a 7RUM, which is sick, essentially 7 rem mag on steroids.

The true difference between 7mm Rem Mag and 7 PRC isn't that huge. Mostly just the fact that the majority of 7mm Rem Mag factory rifles are limited by a 1: 10 twist. 7 PRC comes standard at 1:8". That said, 7 PRC is a hand loader's dream. I'm running the 195gr Berger EOL out of my Seekins Precision Havak PH2 in 7 PRC at 2930fps, and .3" groups. That is currently my favorite setup and cartridge, lol. I'd love to see what that load would do to the steel!

@@johnanderson3405 Noot yet, I just don’t like tracking. The Sierra match king has a well deserved reputation for accuracy and extreme fragmentation. I’ve always gotten complete pass throughs but usually find lead and copper in the organs with a 6” diameter area of damage around the main wound channel with a roughly 3/4” exit wound and occasional secondary exit wounds from the larger pieces of fragmentation.

That’s a lot of fire power for whitetails lol, I’ve never had to track a deer more 40-50 yds maybe using my Rem model 7 in .260 rem using 140gr psp’s and more often then not they dropped on the spot, are you culling them in Saskatchewan where bucks can weigh in excess of 300lbs? 😅

I find these videos very interesting and this isn't something I normally would watch. If I can make a request for a calibre it's 9.3x62 and 6.5x55 Swedish. I'm an avid hunter and these are the calibres I settled on after 25 years or so of experience with different weapons and ammunition.

My father and I have both used the 7mm Mag for all of our hunting. Have managed deer, elk, and moose with no issue. If you want to go hunting Kodiak/Grizzly/Polar bears, then you might want to consider something with a little more punch.

That was a issue for a while with Hornady ammo, other brands seem to have no issues I believe though it is now fixed, it was a powder issue, Hornady couldn't get the Powder they needed to reach the velocity's advertised for a while

7mm Remington Magnum looks like about $1.20-1.40/round. .280 Remington is about $1.50-1.80/round. 7mm PRC is about $1.75-2/round. Just looking at all Hornady ammo on ammoseek. Not sure about recoil but my 7mm Rem Mag model 700 is pretty bruising even with a pachmayr recoil pad.
