When you take the paper plates out of the plastic, tape them together. That way, when you count them, you know each taped group is 40 plates, or 100, or however many depending on the size of the packages you bought. That will make counting easier because all you would have to do is count how many taped groups the bullet went through, then multiply that number by the number of plates in each group, then just add the plates it went through in the last group before getting stuck.

I expected the .308 and the .30-06 to perform almost identically since the .308 was designed to replace the .30-06. I was not surprised that the .30/30 didn't penetrate as far because of its round nose.
@ytgsp
@ytgsp 5 жыл бұрын
No surprises, except to the shooter. The 7.62 x 51 was designed to supply 30.06 performance in a shorter cartridge. It did exactly that. The cowboy cartridge was probably never produced with military performance in it's specification.

Each shot should have been taken under the same conditions. You could see how the 2nd and 3rd results were skewed slightly by the tearing from the 1st. Just basic experimental practice. OTOH, he's not testing some new cancer drug. It was just a suggestion, especially since he had plenty of plates that he intended to get rid of.

I was a delivery driver for a pizza chain years ago... every run gave me a 1”x3” label... I would put them on a delivery menu that was folded in half(about3”x6”approx)id use the same thing every night... for about two years... it eventually was about 4-5” thick... I finally took it to the range and gave it 150 grains of 30-06 love... it made it through... barely... it was very tight though because the labels were all glued together and compressed... it was fun! I miss the pie... lol

First: Love the test! 2nd: to make your life easier to count plates, when setting up, run a magic marker down the edge of the stack and rotate each stack of 50 or 100 plates so you can count each batch quickly and just need to hand count the final stack (or if near end of stack, subtract the ones left til next stack).

I harvested my first buck with a Marlin 30-30. Great rifle to this day. As of the last 6 hunting seasons I have relied on a Remington Gamemaster pump 30-06 which is absolutely awesome and my primary hunting rifle. Deer simply don't run much if at all with the 30-06, usually drop dead right where they stood.

amazing to see how the lead reacts to all of the compressive forces and energy transmissions while penetrating. Makes one wonder why the lead would liquefy and disperse as it does, but still stay in a semi localized area while in that medium. I am curious as to how a fmj spritzer would perform.

Great video incase I'm ever hunting something hiding behind paper plates and have a multitude of rifles / carbines / calibers to choose from. Who didn't know the 30/30 would go through less plates with its bull nose shape ? Of the calibers tested, I own a 30/30 ; are you confirming my choice? The 30/30 mushroomed and gave up all of its energy ( tissue damage ) quickly or sooner.

The answer is : 1 plate. The last one stopped the bullet. Suggestions: 1) spray paint the outer edge of last plate in each package, say every 100, to easily count number of plates for reference. 2) spray paint a line from front to back of entire stack to align for reference. 3) Don't pull plates apart until all shots have been fired, then score keeping alignment in mind as to which quadrant was which shot. Fun stuff!

Why would you think a .30/30 win.would penetrate more plates then the 7.62×51 NATO??. It just doesn't have enough powder charge behind it to even get close.
@richarddoucet7661
@richarddoucet7661 4 жыл бұрын
one would think. But because the 30.06 and 308 also have quite a bit higher velocity at that range the bullets fall apart as they impact. Full metal jacket or bonded bullets would have the 30.06 and 308 outshine the 30-30 even more probably
@pyrorye-80
@pyrorye-80 3 жыл бұрын
Powder charge has nothing to do with it. Properly constructed bullet followed by lower velocity gets you more penetration. Hi velocity plays hell on bullets and will grind penetration to a halt real fast. I promise you my 500 jrh pushing a 440 grain hard cast at half the velocity than the 3006 will penetrate much much further
@geezlepuss7863

Seems hard to compare the 30.06 vs .308 as there are many different loads possible. I wud expect 30.06 to be more powerful, but you might have a weak load 30.06 & a strong load .308.

Ammo dependent. Not surprised by the results at all personally. You can buy harder heavier cast lead JSP’s for a 30/30 that would penetrate just as well, with less expansion of course, Buffalo Bore makes a 190 grain semi hard cast lead JSP for the 30/30. Core lokts are a relatively soft cast round, excellent for deer within 150 yards.

Your scientific research proved that modern 308 and 3006 have about the same level of paper plate destructive power... the 3030 far less, hmmm? The first two rounds were pointed tips while the third was a round nose design - not really a fair comparison. If you wanted to get a bit closer to the true power between the three, use Hornady pointed 3030 rounds along with Hornady 308 and 3006 rounfs with the same bullets. Cool video!

I don't understand why you would think the 30-30 would go the furthest. It is clearly the weakest of the three going by specs. Only more barrel length or a hotter loading could help it beat a 30-06. All other things being equal, this outcome was entirely predictable.
@WHOTEEWHO

Because the 3030 goes furthest in water and is slower. The faster rounds have the tendency to break apart quicker

Because the slower moving round, could essentially penetrate deeper due to lack of bullet deformation. An AK-47 7.62 x 39, moving at 2,400 FPS, will penetrate better than most other defensive rounds due to its slow moving speed and energy transfer . The 7.62 x 39 actually penetrated better than my 308. Bullet design is key. The AK ammo was 123 grain steel jacketed, whereas the 308 I was shooting is a 150 gr Nosler ballistic tip and expanded. If the 30-30 round was not round nose, had a similar design to the 308 and .06 round, I’m guessing that he would have been correct.

Energy equals the mass times the velocity squared fundamental equation from the theory of relativity. Small changes in velocity have much large impact on energy than changes in mass. The blunt tip of the 30-30 will also reduce it's ability to penetrate plates, I.e a dull knife, compared to the sharper point of the other rounds. None the less, an entertaining exhibition of the bullet's relative performance. Thank you.

I watched your 270 vs 243 paper plate test before this. They went through more plates. I hypothesize that's because there were fewer plates. More plates stacked up absorbs more energy, like a bigger shock absorber.
@WHOTEEWHO
@WHOTEEWHO 5 жыл бұрын
Good point, but the 270 has a lot more energy with its extra weight. I think that has more to do with it. But im no expert. Thanks for watching Jim!

I'm guessing that IF the 30/30 was shot out of a similar length barrel it would have competed with the 3006 and 308 a lot closer. But the WIN 94 doesn't have that long a barrel to burn the powder for a longer time. And therefore it isn't exiting the barrel as fast... It is also loaded to a lot lower chamber pressures as well. JMHO

30 . 30 has taken more game in north America than any other cartridge. Especially mountain lions and cougars. Today Hornady makes a Spitzer bullet for it called the Leverlution. Soft pointed bullet that stretches its range out to 250 to 300 yards. Nice light gun for wooded area.
@SouthOfSanity79
@SouthOfSanity79 Жыл бұрын
Only because it's been around longer than the other two that is literally the only reason. I'm not saying it's a bad cartridge. I don't like lever action guns but that's my personal preference. You give the 30 ought six more time and it will phase out the 30 30.

What would be interesting is a comparison of .303 British, 8mm Muaser, .30-06 and 7.62x51 Winchester or NATO. See how the old rounds compare to one another and to their replacement.

I think it will be a more accurate power comparison if you will use full jacketed solid bullets that don't disintegrate instead of soft points.

I just watched your video and I enjoyed it. I do have on equestion, why did you think the 30/30 would go thru more plates than the 30-06. I enjoyed this test. What else can you do? Thank you, be safe and have fun.

@jimmieburleigh9549

You don't see them in stores often anymore like back in day but 308 and 3006 corelokts has a round nose bullet like the 3030 in most grain configurations That would make for a mor fair test like on your plates here and other test. Plus it's harder to find store bought but get someone to hand load a few 30 cal 308/30-06 projectiles on the 3030. They are all interchangeable.. Same powder charge just pull and replace projectile...

Stupid test because the velocity is about 200 fps slower. The 30/30 is slower than the other two. Different bullet lighter construction.

Love the content. I just watched the comparison of .17Hmr vs .22mag. The 22mag went through 567 plates, yet the 3006 only went through 302 plates. Surely a 22mag cant penetrate more plates than a large fast bullet from a 3006

Just a afterthought, if you do this test again, you should color the edge of the plate where the bullet stopped and write down plate count so it would be easier for the next shot to count. Color the edge of the second plate, etc
