I'm 4831 is my go to favorite powder for my 7mm. Being a medium burn speed powder, it may be to slow for the 30-30. Idk just my guess is all. Keep up the good work!
@314299
@314299 6 жыл бұрын
4831 is considered a slow burner, in fact it is slower than 4350. It normally would be too slow for the 30/30 with jacketed bullets, however a cast bullet will generally give a lot more velocity with a given powder charge than it will with a jacketed bullet. The idea behind using it is that the pressure curve is not as "steep" as it would be with a faster bullet, this causing less stress on the bullet which may contribute to better accuracy.

Good Video. I may be wrong, But I believe that in some countries (Like in South America) any Military dimensioned ammunition and firearms that chamber it is prohibited from the general public. Savage and Remington offered these rifles as exports to those countries to expand sales. The 30-30 is a game getter and a highly accurate round when loaded properly. That Savage 340 is a classic, I would love to have one in 30-30 as a cast bullet gun. Love the Video content. Dave.
@314299

I believe those same restrictions have made other rounds popular overseas, for instance the .222 Rem that was chambered in the Ruger Mini 14 and other guns in place of the .223 Rem.

Slow burning powder means a spread out pressure curve rather than a pressure spike of fast burn. But must have enough barrel to burn full charge. I think a sabot round of 65 grain spitzer boat tail would make the 30/30 a great flat shooting varmint. Maybe 4350.
@314299
@314299 3 жыл бұрын
The idea was to see if the lower peak pressure would be easier on a cast bullet while providing reasonable velocity, while these were a little slow I was pleased with the load overall. I've seen a few guys try the old Remington 30/30 "Accelerator" sabot rounds and while they were very fast accuracy was poor.

FWIW, I came up with ME of 1352 ft./lbs. for the Winchester brass and 1400 ft./lbs. for the Federal cased loads. Interesting to see cast bullets I a rifle round. Not a very common practice anymore. I believe he original .30-30 round pushed a 165 gr. bullet out the barrel @ 2000 fps. Sounds like you were trying to emulate that loading. Very comfortable to shoot, I imagine. Thanks for posting the video. Very enjoyable watch. =)
@314299
@314299 4 жыл бұрын
As an example factory load lets use a Winchester 170 grain Power Point, Winchester rates that load as 2200 fps, however that is with a 24" long test barrel, however with the shorter barrel found on the 340 performance is generally 2050 fps or so. So the cast load is close in velocity performance to a factory load, which was one objective. The real test was to see if lower burning powder was easier on the cast bullet than a faster powder. The big surprise was the very consistent velocity readings obtained.

@314299
@314299 Жыл бұрын
I have shot some reloads with 150 grain jacketed pointed bullets but I was disappointed with the accuracy. One issue with any pointed bullets is the length of round that will fit into the magazine, the rifle chamber has a throat cut for the regular 170 round nose and so pointed bullets end up being quite far back off the rifling and I suspect this "jump" contributes to the lack of accuracy.

IMR3031 is my old standby..... consistent ...... and bolt action enabled to shoot boatail spire projectiles with which I got tremendous results.....damn near a .308 ..... try that and you will be shocked at long range results out to 800 yards...... I ran it out hot
@DeeMoback

don't forget that the 30-30 cases have a tendency to "grow" in length especially with hot loads and must be shortened every 2-3 reloadings
@314299
@314299 6 жыл бұрын
Yes 3031 is a very good choice for the 30/30, I have done a fair bit of shooting with it in this caliber with both jacketed and cast bullets. However the objective with this load was to try a much slower than normal powder to see what results could be had with cast bullets. Slow powders like this generate much less initial pressure and are therefore easier on cast bullets, not accelerating them as quickly and hopefully causing less deformation while still getting good velocity. As for case stretching I have not noticed any undue stretching with brass fired in my 340, however it is front locking and I also generally neck size my brass. A rear locker like a Winchester 94 will stretch cases more and so will full length sizing.

Great videos of the Savage 340 and the different powders you are using. I have a Savage 840 with the carbine barrel ( 18.5 inch ) I had rechambered to the .30-30 Winchester Ackley Improved. Been getting good results from H4895 with 130 grain Speer FN and 125 grain Hornady and Sierra spire / spitzer bullets. Have not chronographed yet, just been trying for accuracy. Keep up the great videos, as a side note, did you buy or cast those bullets yourself?

One thing I’ve noticed and have read from other owners, is the pressure. When I shoot I can feel the bolt throw is tight when I extract the round. And the primer is really flat. I’m going to experiment with reloading and see if I can lower the pressure a bit from the factory round.

It doesn’t seem to have fried it’s riffling any. It actually a fam member rifle. Hard to find cartridges for it. 2020 is the 5 year. Run by Winchester isn’t it . You should chamber , remove , and inspect your long loads . I would be concerned about jamming the round into the mouth of the barrel . No free movment at ignition can result in high chamber pressure , maybe not so much with cast bullits but you never know . A lifes lesson " the more that I learn , the less that I know "

in my experience it's not an issue with the cast bullets as they are soft and take the rifling easily. With jacketed bullets it's certainly a thing to avoid.
