Scott has such a wonderful sense of humour! How nice the world would be if everyone was like that. I know how frustrated you felt about the expired stuff. When I relocated to the present city I live in, I threw away at least three of those huge black garbage bags of expired foods, baking goods, canned foods, etc. from my cupboards and storage room. I could have kicked myself. Unfortunately I still find myself having to throw away expired stuff - even though I'm a widow now and don't even buy that much! Go figure!

Take those shelves down except for a few. If you don't have all those shelves you won't have places to clutter up again. You're doing great...hang in there!!! :)

I am so proud of your hard work! Last summer I purged my one bedroom apartment. I was tired of it always being a mess. Between work and life, I couldnt keep up with laundry. I knew I would be moving in the fall, and the thought to moving all of my junk just about caused a panic attack. I donated or trashed at least half of what I owned. It was insane. I had 12 big black trash bags of just clothes. It was exhausting, and I got so tired of making trips to donate. I spent 2 months ,almost straight, working on my home. (I wasn't anywhere near horder status, and my home was clean (I am a social worker too, I know what messy is, and I know hording )). The most disheartening was when friends would say that they didn't notice a difference. I had so much crammed into boxes and closets. I found myself purging areas I had already done and found myself letting go of things I didn't think I could part with. i I once coveted books, but I found myself sellig 5 bookshelves worth of books I knew I would never read or read again (and never regretted). It was the most liberating thing I have done to date. Now I am in a two bedroom and can have the whole thing cleaned top to bottom in 3 hours instead of 3 days. I can find what I need, when I need it. what I have found most useful is maintenance purging. Every few months I will clean a space and trash (or donate) a big bag of stuff. And it still feels just as liberating. I have watched all of your videos and remembered my journey. Kudos to you! May you enjoy your home again!

Honestly Sophia, your sorting and purging videos have made me feel so at home. Thank you! My house *used to* look just like yours UNTIL my mother passed away and then a couple years later we moved my Dad from the 40-year 1900 sqft family home (4bdrm, 3 storey) into a 750 sqft 2 bedroom apartment. Guess where I put everything that didn't fit into his apartment? Yep... our house :( My basement is now uninhabitable and it's overloaded with the crap my husband and I had stored (yes, we were pack rats when we were first married, afraid to throw out things that had a value) PLUS the crafting (needlecraft like needlepoint and cross-stitch and knitting and quilting and tole painting), keepsakes and photos and art and furniture my parents had amassed over their life together. Ironically my Dad often says "it's amazing everything fit in my apartment" Ha! :) that makes me laugh (and wince) because he doesn't have a clue of what happened to my house as a result. (I'm not angry at him, it was all my choice, and I feel good that he is so comfortable). Anyway, pray for me to have the bravery to begin the process of going through so much heartfelt belongings (and a huge portion which is CRAP). I hope to be able to record and chronicle it like you did so that I can maybe inspire someone else. Big hugs to you. Jen xo

Sophia, you really have done a great job, in addition, it has opened your eyes to see where changes need to be made. Look at day 30, you donated books! That is amazing progress! I know you are pretty angry at yourself right now, but that is a good thing, as it will help solidify the changes you are making by building convictions about the clutter. When you look back at the 30 + days, you will see a change in you. I'm very proud of you.

thank you again Sophia, From what I see here you are a great Woman, Mother and Wife with a loving family and beautiful home. One of the things I like best about your channel is the non (instagram type) perfection of the videos. You have informed inspired and challenged me to declutter a lot of my stuff. My daughter just took a large garbage bag of boots maybe 12 pair to the church donation shed (prices still on), I can never wear them, just shuffling them from closet to closet. I may have gotten rid of about 15 to 20 bags of clothes and stuff so far thanks to you. Now it is on to Art, fashion and. home decorating magazines etc.!Some mags at 15-17 $ a pop thousands of dollars spent on magazines and I am feeling your pain and regret this, but a lesson well learned.

Now when you enter your laundry room, you will be so happy and pleased the way it looks now. Day 31 was a good lesson for myself as well . I learned from your video not to over buy of products that you really don't need. I cleaned out my sewing room and could' t believe how much stuff I got rid of. It's stuff that I said I'll work on later (5) years ago. I'm donating a hug bag of stuff a nd giving some things to my sister that she wants. Love your videos!!!!!! Please keep the videos coming. Awww. Miss S. don't be too hard on yourself. Most of us have been there. I know I have and am still in the process of changing. I wish I had all the money back from the junk I've purchased over the years and tossed when it wasn't used. *So does hubby* Just keep in mind have far you've come and the changes made! I'm really surprised the former owners didn't put in a full bath in your laundry room and could have been the intentions at one time. Painting the floor might be an option to keep down concrete dust until you get to the re-do. CEO of Hefty. Hahahaha!

You're amazing Sophia! Thank for NOT donating the expired food.. I had to use food from a food pantry once, and all of the stuff I recieved was expired. I felt so sad, but at the same time grateful we had something to eat. Food banks rely on donations, if what you donate is expired that's what people will recieve, expired food. 😢😢😢

Sophia, put that silver Tiffany plate under your water carafe next to your bed. I have one like that under mine. If the water drips down the carafe it won't get on the wood. The crystal and sliver looks nice together too. I got rid of a lot of stuff last summer during the big purge, but I still kept a lot of stuff because--believe it or not, I'm still going though those phases. You've done a great job purging, but I do keep *ANYTHING* I think I might use again. My problem is keeping things neat and organized. I would not toss out those extra bins you have. If you can stack them in a corner or the garage, I would. So what I did was invest in those steel five tier racks for the basement. I have about twelve of them with labeled bins. Don't go too crazy tossing stuff out. We don't want to be hoarders, but I don't want to have live regretting tossing something out that I'll have to rebuy in the future. Great vid!
@msjenjenp8 жыл бұрын
The beauty of getting rid of all that stuff that makes you feel guilty is that you never have to think about it again. You are so right about the different "phases" of life where you buy everything imaginable to do it and then abandon it completely only to have to throw out or donate all that expensive stuff you wasted money on which makes you want to hold onto it. It's a vicious circle. A good rule is when you buy something new, something of the same size has to go. At least that way the hoard doesn't grow in size.
@nboyer628 жыл бұрын
Hey Sophia, the food bank will take will food within a year of the expiration date. What they say is the "date" is a general "sell by" date. I work at Target and we donate tons of food to our food bank in Pennsauken N.J. Also your animal shelters will take any food and litter as well as sheets and blankets. You are doing awesome and I'm loving that you are extended this challenge!!!!😊

She too had finished cross stitch projects in a drawer. One year for her birthday, I took (she never knew) a beautiful candlewicking piece she had done and had it framed for her. BTW I loved the picture of you with the horse, it was very French looking.

Please try to be kind to yourself, it's disheartening to see you beat yourself up. :-) I believe it's only normal in a family, with kids, and moving, and owning your first home, and both working, and also nostalgia from France...etc.. also I see the different things pertaining to your "phases" as a sign of your richness as a person, curiosity/interest for life and growth and experience and creativity! :-) And finally seeing you for these 31 videos interacting with your marvelous family is so precious, there is much love and soul and laughter and closeness. This is the real deal! Now your house is breathing more every day, you are learning in awareness and kudos Sophia! When I was doing this a few years ago my version of your Scott kept saying" self inflicted"....by the end I was ready to put him out the curb...lol....now when I want to bring something in , the vision of him laughing and saying "self inflected"...stops me in my tracks....and I walk away without a purchase.. I really think most of us have the same sort of hidden clutter in storage spots around the house. If it's neatly out of sight, we all forget about it right? If you could see our home office (and it truly is an office - my husband works from home in there every day), you would feel MUCH better about your situation; trust me, our home office is WAY worse than anything I've seen in your home! I am looking after our cat at our old flat where we used to live and I realise how much is STILL in these cupboards and sheds...I have to confront it really...he has not complained (maybe not noticed as he is a hoarder too) . Thank you for doing this series. You have really inspired me. You are so funny in this video. The things you say are the things that I think when I'm attempting to declutter my things and my mothers things. We have the same issues. I'm amazed you have had the patience and stamina to keep with it for 30 plus days! Thanks again!

While a toilette seems weird in a laundry room, here in germany it is very common to have the washing mashines in the bathroom... not entirely the same thing but similar situation. we surely dont hang up clothes in the bathroom or store much stuff in there but the combonation of washing mashine and toilet (which is part of the bathroom) is quite common you see.

I love these videos, Sophia! You are going a great job. I'm a self proclaimed hoarder myself and I've started lightening the load. I can totally relate to you. Don't beat yourself up. You're making a great change. Enjoy the empty spaces you are creating. :)

Its a pity you couldn't move the toilet into the corner where the shelves are. You could build a wall and put up a door! Why on earth did the put the toilet in the middle of the room! You can tell it was built by a man! Haha!

My laundry room is also in a bathroom! My husband volunteered at the local Food Bank. They check all expiration dates and expired food is junked.Love this series!

You've done an absolutely wonderful job as always. I've been inspired to go through all of my belongings and get super organized, I've been working on getting rid of extra possessions for about four years now but this time all the things I decided to keep are all organized.

Look up a pittsburgh toliet. It was common practice in mining towns. The miners would come in, strip off their clothes and go to the bathroom before coming up into the rest of the house. Many of them where in the middle of the basement with no walls surrounding it.

Aww thanks Sophia, I love my laundry room too. I am blessed to have such a great space. We have only been in our current house not quite 4 years. My last house the laundry room was only 4ft by 4 ft. very tiny! You did a great job today in your laundry room!

You are doing great! Some people never do what you are doing now. I bet you will think twice about everything you purchase. That is what happened to me after I started to watch youtube videos about minimalism and started decluttering myself. I am not a minimalist but love the idea of only owning what I love and use. Keep up the good work and soon you will have your house just the way you want it.

You are doing so well and inspiring to not only me but lots of women. I have a long way to go but love the way my house is looking. I have lived in two houses where the laundry is in the bathroom or the bathroom in the laundry-which ever way you looked at it :)

Raising my hand here... I have a toilet in my downstairs utility/laundry/bathroom , not much bigger than your room. My lower level is all living space so that room is the main bathroom for the 2 bedrooms downstairs. Just have the floor painted and a throw rug, the walls are dry-walled, but the ceiling is all rough with wires & pipes, can"t really put a drop one over it, so we live with it :p ! I give you a extra thumbs up for trying couponing, I did too, but only have a few shavers and a couple shampoos left, never did it really big. I Don"t even get a paper anymore so no coupons. Many people will benefit from your donations of extras! I would not donate any expired cans or medicines either. Thanks again to Scott for the comedy at the end :)!! sharing with anyone I talk to in person or online, of course.
