It's finally here. I've been getting asked to make a sequel to "30 Days to Better Doubles" for YEARS. So here's 30 Days to Better Singles. If you are needing to work on your single stroke roll, if your drum rolls aren't as clean as you want them, or if you're just wanting an organized program to use that will give you results and clean up your single strokes, this is it. It follows the same program as 30 Days to Better Doubles does. All new exercises aimed at targeting your single strokes and arranged in the same format that has helped tens of thousands of drummers with their double strokes over the past 7 years.

For people (like me) that have to look up the single exercises when doing them: 1. Down with the Ups: Part 1 2:27 (ex. 65bpm 3:54) 2. Down with the Ups: Part 2 5:16 (ex. 60bpm 6:18) 3. Single Diddlin' 7:11 (ex. 60bpm 9:21) 4. Keep It Strait 9:56 (ex. 60bpm 11:48) 5. The Sextuplet Scramlbe 12:23 (ex. 60bpm 15:52) 6. The Cooker 16:59 (ex. 50bpm 18:10) 7. Burn It Up 18:55 (ex. 60bpm 20:09) 8. Accenting the 3's 20:28 (ex. 55bpm 22:05) 9. Moveable Diddles 23:08 (ex. 55bpm 22:55) Great work you're doing, thanks a lot for that! Just started doing these, but I'm currently only trying to do the single exercises as I'm not used to read notes (never learnt it).

Hi Stephen: Thank you for this. My single stroke roll is my great weakness. The rudiment is a paradox. It is the easiest one to learn, however it is the hardest one to play musically at moderate to fast tempos. I find your exercises challenging because I do not read music well. (I am improving though). If anyone else is in this situation, slow it way down. I found I could count the 32nd notes when I set my metronome to 30 bpm. It is a vital tool to any drummer. I am old school however. I use a digital metronome produced by a major music company. I like the feel and the sound of it. I have a couple of apps on my phone, but I never use them. That said, downloaded metronome apps are perfectly fine if you find one that you like. Thanks again for the exercises and your clarity in explaining them.

This routine has helped so many of my issues. My time, my finger control, pretty much all of my issues have improved dramatically. I did the routine for about a month without increasing the tempo (75bpm for most of the exercises), and did it behind the kit so I could incorporate my feet too. Several months later and I've got clean, smooth and controlled singles as 32nd notes up to 100bpm, and my 16th note triplets up to 135bpm. Seriously, try this routine! Try the 30 days better doubles, also been super helpful. Thank you Stephen. I'd love to see a "30 days to better flams" :)

Sorry if you've already covered these topics (remember, I'm new here. You can thank rdavidr for hipping me to your channel), but I'd like to see videos and hear your thoughts on: Dead sticking. Throne height. Bury or bounce the beater. Nylon vs. Wood tip sticks. Cymbal tightness and angle. Keep on flammin'.

Thank you for this. I have been working on the Better Doubles for a couple weeks now and my left hand technique is so bad that I struggle to get most of the exercises clean at 54 bpm so I'm hoping doing both of these programs will help. I noticed my singles aren't very clean recently and I'm thinking getting singles clean will help me be able to to get doubles clean.

My left lags and is out of control. On both hand and feet, left leading is a major pain in the ass! Good program, have and will recommend!

I really enjoyed this video, and I intend to struggle through the exercises for the 30 days and see what happens. As a beginner I really struggle with the timing, especially of the 32 notes (guess the answer is slow it down right?) and also the way I seem to learn is by listening to the patterns so sometimes your counting over the top makes it quite difficult although I completely understand why, and in fairness you don't do it all the time - I just need a slighty longer period without. I slow down the video speed and do looped screen capture. The content though is superb of course, I just need to find a structured course at a slightly lower level to bring me to this point and beyond. I have looked on the website, but its a bit bewildering and difficult to know where to 'jump' in to a course, as I am beyond basics (can hold basic rhythms quite well and play along to tracks with decent independence) but having only played for 5 months I am missing technique. I practice every day and will be doing this one and the hand speed workout for 20 minutes each as part of my practice routine (I tend to do rudiments and technique in the morning and then play to tracks in the afternoon /evening)

Hi Stephen, I want to thank you for this awesome video! I'm a new drummer, however I feel like I've been drumming my whole life. I'm 28, I've just bought a house and I'm about to buy my first drum kit as I finally have the space for one. It's been my dream to be a drummer since I first heard 2112 in highschool. I have a bit of ADHD, and have always kept rhythms with my hands and feet while listening to music (and sometimes when I'm not!). All I have so far is a practice pad and a couple pairs of sticks, and I told myself I couldn't buy a drum kit unless I put in the leg work on my rudiments, and that's when I found your video. My question for you is, do you think this is the right place for me to start? I've been practicing singles, doubles, and paradiddles this past month. My double strokes are so-so but getting better, and my paradiddles at 120bpm and higher are awful. Should I just focus on my singles for now? Anyways, thanks again for the video! I'm already 3 days into this program and I hope to continue until the end, cheers!

I've been practicing this on and off, not making so much progress on the bpm, but a lot with feel. My grip has loosened and I now have more than "HARD" and soft in my snare vocabulary. Also yesterday I noticed that my left is not moving the stick up an down, but a bit to the side, which is quite annoying and almost scary. The sextaplet bit is the most fun and really shows how your weaker hand leads. Or doesn't. Love the drill, can't wait to incorporate it to my feet!

Hey Stephen! Quick question. Should I start with practicing single stroke or double stroke first? Does it really matter? Thanks in advance

I am very grafeful for this lesson! I started this course today. I hope it will help me to polish the song that i am trying to learn which have many simlarities with exercises shown in this video. I would recomend to everyone Colours of Bubbles - Wane for this lesson, and if someone knows similar songs where we can apply exercises from this lesson, write in comments!

Great exercises! You might want to take your ring off for these - can hear the sticks clicking on it in some of the exercises 😁

Yea...new ring. Lost mine (after 16 frickin' years) on the coast of South Carolina last year. Kudos to whoever finds it...so still getting used to the new, heavier one.

Hi Stephan, I just downloaded the PDF. I am not sure whether Down with the Ups: Part 1 and 2 were correctly transcribed. Could you please check? Thanks

On accenting the 3's, you played the last measure (32nd notes) twice and in the sheet it is written you play it one time? or i missed something? Great workout for singles. Thank you!

I noticed the same thing. That last measure seems to have seven accents in the video, not five.

Man your 30 days to better... singles/doubles 🤘🏽 Question: #5 “The Sextuplet Scramble”. The second bar; halfway through the L is accented. Am I supposed to start the second time through with my left hand?? All the best. Frank Odom

Since i dont have the money for a full kit, ive been playing on the set that comes with the rock band game and i usually score in the 90% regions on even songs by dream theater and such. Obviously the game cant come close to the real thing in terms of difficulty. When im able to get a set, is there anything specifically i should watch out for??

If you're just starting out, invest more into your cymbals and heads. Budget drum shells (even those $60 kids kits) with good cymbals and heads will sound better than expensive drums with stock heads and cymbals. You'll get a lot more enjoyment out of your drums if do. If buying used drums, make sure the bearing edges (google what those are) are in good condition and the hoops aren't warped.
