Week 1 Focus: Mastering Your Environment
Notes:
To Master your environment:
1. Identify any times of the day where you get tempted to eat junk in order to structure your life and create routines. 2. Clear out your pantry/fridge/freezer of tempting junk foods. Stock up on fruit, veggies, rice, beans, oatmeal, barley, potatoes and add you’re favorite spices so that when you're hungry, you always have healthy food ready to eat. 3. Talk to the people in your household about your health goals and why this is important to you and ask them to not bring tempting food into the home. Chef AJ has a quote that goes "If it's in your house, it's in your mouth." Keep your home a junk food free zone.

What Is Calorie Density and how does it help you lose weight? Simply put, calorie density is the number of calories in a given volume of food. Certain foods have more calories packed into them - pound for pound - than others. That means each food has its own caloric density. Fresh tomatoes, for example, have just 90 calories per pound. Bagels are packed with more than 1,200 calories per pound. Get the idea? With each bite of bagel, you’re taking in 13 times as many calories as each bite of tomato.

This is 100% real Elena, you don’t have to starve yourself at any time. You should and will feel satiated eating this way. I’ve lived this way for 5 years.

Thank you so much for this. Been doing starch solution a few wks now & down 5 pounds. 5 more to go! As a 52 yr old, I’ve struggled with menopausal weight gain & hot flashes. Hot flashes now gone! So glad I found this way of eating and am thankful for your channel! ❤️

I’m so on board with this! I have been a vegan for 6 years but I’ve cared about animals more than about myself which resulted in me gaining a lot of weight. I’ve indulged in vegan processed foods, desserts and takeout. I’m interested in eating healthy whole food plant based. I read Starch Solution this past week and started my healthier journey. I’ve been binge watching your videos. I have 30 lbs to lose and I’m so happy you are doing this challenge. Thank you! I’m looking forward to your videos and instagram posts. 💓

Love this series! As they say “Set systems, not goals.” Thanks for highlighting a 30 day behavioral habits challenge rather than a 30 day “losing x number of lbs” challenge which is all over KZbin. I’m an overthinker when it comes to diet and I need to set the systems in place to start what you said - “autopilot” so that I free up the mental space for living my life! Glad you’re giving out this information for free! 👍

I'm so glad you're doing this challenge. I've been in a rut, partially I think it is the medicine I am on for fibromyalgia. To get out of the rut I started with a one month walking challenge and I'm approaching day 30 and was trying to decide what I should challenge myself to do next. Okay I’m in! I needed this. I just went 4 days and then went off last night for dinner and today for lunch. So back to it the rest of the day and the next 30 days. I know I have to fast the meat, eggs and dairy along with prayer, which makes all this possible for me. I’m dedicated, I’m so tired of being overweight and feeling fat. I do want this to come naturally. These 4 days I struggled a bit with what to eat. I don’t have Instagram so I don’t know how we are joining this challenge, but sign me up!

Miriam Wallman, do you feel like you have to give up your weekend wine in order to get back on track? I just switched my lifestyle to wine on weekends only. Now, reading your message makes me wonder if I have to give up alcohol all together. Well....... for 30 days. (I gotta keep it real). I would appreciate your input.

April J honestly, I don’t think alcohol has any regular place in a healthy diet....and for me this isn’t just about weight loss, it’s about my long term health. I struggled to lose any weight until I cut wine out entirely and once I had I realised how much better I felt as well. My aim is to be alcohol free except for perhaps on special occasions...as a sort of naughty treat.

I am giving a go to this eating style, however I am conscious about the fact that food is not the only factor in a weight loss process. Hormones, sleep, sport, weather, motivation, cravings, peace of mind, age, health issues play all a fundamental role in it.

I actually know already you go for walks because I've watched some of your videos! But I still have the question of what exercise you're doing if you're doing more than walking!!!

So my confusion here is that we can dilute the calorie density of something meaning if I want to put a quarter cup of cashews to make my cheese sauce and use the cheese sauce over three or four days I’m still adding the calorie dense food but it’s diluted by the other ingredients I’m using. Same with my hummus if I put 1 tablespoon of tahini in one whole can of garbanzo beans and that lasts me a few days I’ve just diluted the calorie density. I want to make this work and absolutely love all the hard work you do and put into your channel. Not being argumentative at all just trying to add a few healthy fats into my day and would like to hear your thoughts on this .

I'm looking forward to this challenge. I have been struggling with losing this extra 10 pounds for so long now. I eat pretty clean, for the most part. I think my body's metabolism just slowed down so much when I turned 54 this past year. Looking to get to the weight where I feel my best. Thank you for offering this.

Yep, at 53 it's much harder to keep weight off. I don't need to lose weight, but I also don't want to look at food and gain weight. My blood sugar is also up from my high fat vegan diet...NOT good. I need to eat this way for my blood sugar, if nothing else.

I’ve been plant based for 5 years and eat this way. A little bit of thought and prep saves eating rubbish. You get all of your nutrition from plants so don’t worry. Just take a B12 Supplement (even meat eaters are B12 deficient).

No. I would recommend no eating popcorn. It has a calorie density of approximately 1693 calories per pound even without oil. I like to snack on a bowl or fresh grapes or blueberries. :)

I want to give this a try but it is hard to change the mindset about carbs. I get overwhelmed by the different choices of eating. Keto, carnivore, plant based. I want one that I can reap health benefits..

First time doing low calorie density. Doing 1200 on MyFitnessPal . Seems like I’m not eating enough. So far went from 146 to 141 but now two weeks with the same weight.

I have a Q&a video coming out in the new couple of days and a new ‘what I eat today ‘ video every Wednesday with meal ideas. I eat oatmeal with berries or a banana, berry smoothie with a handful of leafy greens for breakfast most days. Lots of rice and veggie bowls, soups, black bean chili, pasta with veggies, etc.

Does air popped popcorn fit into a low density food plan? I sprinkle low sodium soy sauce on mine. Will it derail me from my progress?

I don’t recommend popcorn. It actually has a high calorie per pound, even without oil. Do you like grapes or berries? Snacking on a bowl of grapes is something I do often when I’m watching tv. :) always choose foods that are full of water and fiber rather than dried out foods.

I didn’t realize that everything has oil in it, hummus, pasta sauce, frozen French fries.. maybe you can recommend brands of typical items that don’t have added oil?

I make my own hummus, no-oil fries by slicing up potatoes, and I use a $1 walmart pasta sauce in a can that has no oil and then I add in my spices. :)

Please help me with how to eat beans. You and hch both refer to eating beans, but not as much as pasta, potatoes and rice. On the half veg half starch plate, do I eat, i.e., 2 cups of beans and 2 cups of broccoli? Or are beans and rice both starches. So then I would eat a combo of 2 cups rice/beans and 2 cups of veg? Help!

I personally don’t count or measure any of my food. Or limit the amount of rice or bean or anything that’s low calorie density. That’s actually one of the great benefits of eating this way. In the rare instance that someone has such a very low metabolism that even rice is too calorie dense for them to be able to eat to enable them to get to their healthy ideal weight range... then I would tell them to stick with potatoes and beans instead but to still not measure or limit them. Mixing these foods in with green veggies (which I recommend) lowers the overall calorie density of the meal even more because most greens are anywhere from 75-250 calories per pound.

Beans contain helpful amounts of both carbohydrate and protein, also fibre, but are very low in fat and low in calorie density, so are excellent for weight loss and gut health. On that basis, there is no reason to limit the amount of beans or lentils that you eat. If you want to eat them with rice and vegetables and are trying to lose weight, it probably makes sense to have half the plate filled with veg and the other half made up of a combination of the beans and rice. If you don’t need to lose weight maybe aim for a third of each item. Just eat until you are comfortably full. Nobody got fat eating rice, beans and vegetables! The world’s most frequently eaten meal is dhal and rice, consumed daily by millions of fit, healthy, slender people around the world.

To Master your environment: 1. Identify any times of the day / situations where you get tempted to eat junk. 2. Clear out your pantry/fridge/freezer of tempting junk foods. Stock up on fruit, veggies, rice, beans, oatmeal, barley, potatoes and and you’re fave spices. 3. Talk to the people in your household about your health goals and why this is important to you and ask them to not bring tempting food into the home.

My family don't want to to put my trigger foods out of reach... the cereals and peanut butter. I meal prep last Sunday and all the week I ate cereals, rice banana peanut butter, bread peanut butter jelly... I have no idea how can I be successful?

cendril2 , you have to be bold with love. Demand that those trigger foods do not enter your house. Or if the trigger food is in your sight, you have the right to throw it away. You have to demand your success. You can do anything once you realize you really can.

when im home i control the food but when taking vacation i just cannot verify whether its oil free or not because lets face it restaurants dont do alot of oil free cooking anyway.
