Everyone goes on about specs, but completely ignores the difference an OS/menu makes. If it’s geared to photo, it’ll be better for that. If it’s geared for video it will be better for that use. This is what makes the R5 C such a usable camera - no compromise in the menus (the bit of the camera you use often for every single shoot). Great insight as always, thanks Josh!

Great Video as always Josh... I think you made great points about the IBIS. I am not a big fan of IBIS for video. The wobbling around were you are in focus can be a feature I guess but for most of the time it's just a distraction. I am a bigger fan of stabilizing the entire entire rig than just the sensor. Like motorized gimbal. I don't have the budget for the R5C but I had to choose between the R6ii and the R8 and I ended up choosing the R8 just because it didn't have IBIS. I am missing out on dual card slots and I have to carry a USB-c power bank but you live with what you live with. One thing is for sure I am slowly upgrading my glass and other parts of my gear and probably will end up with an R5C or R5Cii in a few years. I do wish I could shoot open gate and have access to Shutter angle mostly because I would think that Shutter angle would just save time when switching modes and figuring out shutter speed in general for what ever effects you are doing. I do work in dusty environments. Probably why I don't really like fans but I totally understand why you do.

Been shooting tons of 8k60 raw light on my R5ii, imho that’s the way to go for slowmo on that camera. Sure the files are large but they’re not insane, you mostly shoot in small bursts on 60p, and hard drives are cheap these days. The only time I’ve gone to 4k XAVC is for really long take stuff like interviews, and have yet to overheat the camera in 4k 24p fine.

I bet you the R5C only did better with the battery due to the fan. Doesn't make sense at first but I think the fan keeping the camera cooler made it more efficient.
@ItsBerg2 ай бұрын
Quick correction: You can shoot in raw on the r5c and interpret as clog2, but it’s not true clog2. The dynamic range was baked into the clog3 curve which is similar to clog(1), and so there aren’t any tangible benefits to interpreting as clog 2. Gerald Undone did a test with this on the r5c and saw there was no benefit to this, and it behaved very much like the original clog.

I tested both 8K60 RAW LT and 4K60 SRAW and compared them to the 4K60 LGOP internal mode when connected to an Atomos. The footage recorded via the Atomos when it’s in internal RAW mode is definitely sharper and appears to be over-sampled.

While I have been arguing with him that he does not need to do this, he is insisting that I choose; otherwise, he will just choose for me. So he has already purchased the Canon R5 Mark II and is wanting to know if I want the C400 or the C80. I am planning on using it for KZbin and probably real estate videos, as well as my photography business. Obviously, I have already tried to talk him out of it, but that's not happening, so I wanted to know your thoughts. The other thing is he is very well off, and he told me not to think of the money. He stated that he is investing in his brother, which very much hit me pretty hard emotionally, but he will do it anyway, so I just need some help from you on what avenue I should take. The reason why the readout speed is similar is that mirrorless cameras do not use stacked sensor circuitry for video due to heat and power consumption concerns. This is the same with nikon z9/z8. Photo mode is way faster, while video is still hovering around the 15ms mark.
@Josh_Sattin2 ай бұрын
I got sub 10 ms read out speed when testing the Z6 III - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKHSk52GoKlgnaM That sensor is only "partially stacked" vs stacked on the Z8/Z9/R5II.
@tomasz98062 ай бұрын
@Josh_Sattin Yes, that one is an exception. This comes at the expense of noise and dr, however. If z9 was to use stacked circuitry for video, the readout speed would be 3.7ms!

I will say Ive been using the R5c as my main camera for over 6 months now and have used it every weekend and i have to say the digital IS is great BUT i still have some weird "wobbles" that come from the digital IS and it drives me nuts. On a gimbal i really don't need it but i will say having Digital IS with the camera just on a mono pod is honestly a lifesaver Maybe it was my mistake to have Digital IS on while on a gimbal, didn't think there would be an issue but there is sometimes when people are dancing. For handheld it stays on. I have a question for all of you, Ive done some research and am looking for a better ceremony camera, have the r7 for that. Would you guys go for another r5c or the c70? I looked at the c70 and i really don't think it would benefit me any that the r5c doesn't already offer other than a better audio setup on the c70 I would go for a r6 but the record limits really throw a wrench in that. Any advice would be great and im staying canon, i don't want to learn another operation system, it already a huge jump coming from a R7 to a r5c and the cinema OS definitely took a bit to get used to.

I had the C70 and sold it to get the R5 C. I had the budget to buy another on but got another R5 C instead. It’s just too versatile, while the C70 has gorgeous footage, I don’t think it matches up to the R5 C. I did own an R6 II - that is a perfect wedding cam: oversampled up to 4K60 (didn’t overheat for short clips), long takes in 4k 25p didn’t overheat for me either. Ibis. 2+ hour battery life. The image also has some secret sauce. If someone offered me a free R6 II or C70, I’d take the R6 II. I was also at a wedding last month and both videographers were using R6 IIs with rf 24-70. Hope this is useful :)

great video josh. heres my takes on the cameras. i used to own the r5c since its debut, never had a love n hate relationship with a camera b4 lol. its a great hybrid camera helped me a lot in my jobs. but, its really hard to use on set sometimes. I only shoot in raw, its quite frustrating to see the battery decrease not even using it and to reconnect the type c cable linking the external battery everytime switching it on.i had to plug in an external power due to the frame rates so, i always had to fiddle the rig on set. also, its my bcam, so i do need to mount it outside cars or on jibs and the biggest downside for me is not having an app to control it. theres noway to even run/stop the cam unless using a battery grip which is a joke. and for such a big grip it only takes 1 lpe6 to power the cam, seriously who designed it? and the autofocus is unreliable, esp in less than perfect lighting conditions. for a b or c cam, i don want to pay for another focus puller, but during the time i was using the r5c,60% of the time i had to hire a focus puller for the bcam. but i love everything else about this camera so i kept it for 2 years+. after using the r52 for a car shoot, i think it kinda solved my problems with the r5c. but the time i was using the R52 it had BIG problems. manual lens footage was unusable in any NLE, i mean howcome no one from canon told us users about this. luckily i tested the camera with my exact work setup and found out that manual lens footage were flickering in NLE. so i ended up using canon RF lenses. my friend wasnt so lucky tho, he travled to Budapest form china for a job and brought Leica cine lenses to pair with his new R52 and got almost ruined. luckily canon china was able to help him transfer everything to mov. i think r52 new firmware has fixed this issue. now im planning to get the r52, it has its problems but, don see another hybrid camera that suits my workflow. especially after investing some money in canon lenses.

A techinical question, is it possible put c-log 2 via firmware update (if Canon willing) or is a hardware-sensor thing?
@Josh_Sattin2 ай бұрын
They probably could technically add Clog2 to any camera but they won't do it. Sony put Slog3 in their older 8-bit cameras and it was basically unusable. Check out this video for more information about Canon's log profiles: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnjTY2CDqpp4oqs

The R5ii is clearly better with clog 2 if we're being honest..

IBIS wiggle is a huge factor, absolutely awful in the r5 and hardly better in the r5ii. Still for me clog2 matches sony DR better so i had to upgrade frok r5ii
