From the eyes of a US citizen, The biggest mistake we made was Treating the Russians post Soviet collapse like a defeated enemy, instead of trying to do whatever we could to build friendly relations. Russia post collapse had no chance to really be our enemy, yet the west treated them as such for some unknown reason. I believe this lead to the political position we are currently in. The USA has been in a better position the entire time, so I feel like I have to put most of the fault on the US at the time.

The west made very little attempts to rebuild relations, which led to the situation we are in now. the greatest evidence of this is Japan, where after the enemy was defeated, they weren't still being treated as the enemy, the people were being helped.
