I was diagnosed in 1985, I've outlived most close friends. I got so comfortable knowing I was going to die soon, that I forgot how to live. I never really regained that knowledge. Chronic depression, drug toxicity, etcetcetc. With help, I realized my real issue was feeling that I was no longer in control of my life. When I realized suicide was the ultimate control I felt remarkably better. It seems counter-intuitive but when I actually found a therapist who would discuss suicide with me without diving for the phone, it was a relief. I'm not saying suicide is no longer on the table, it definitely is ,but somehow seems less likely

I'm quite late with my comment however I hope you are doing well. You should think about how lucky you are that you have survived while more than 99% of HIV positive people who got diagnosed in 80s, died long ago. Most of them wanted to live however they were not as lucky as you are. Please live for those who didn't survive and tell your story to others. I'm sure your existence means a lot to the people who love you.

He looked just as heathy. My aunt in law died in the early 90s not long after she contracted it from a sickle cell blood infusion. Believe it or not they weren’t thoroughly screening blood in the 80s.

I have a friend who received one in 1980 and got HIV and Hep C, but somehow, he never showed symptoms until he was 16 when he got a blister from playing the drums that turned into a staph infection, and got a test and it showed up. He has since taken meds and sometimes gets sick but he's been very lucky!!

I'm so glad to see this awesome man still standing after all these years. However, we should all remember that R. Gallo actually got in the way of developing and releasing a potential solution for HIV because of his ego. It was the French who really discovered it but they needed him to move forward and he wouldn't do it unless he got credit. While I applaud Gallo's contribution his ego got in the way and he's probably not a very nice person.

Non-progressors simply don't develop past the "non-detectable" level of viral load ever, but then there are guys like this who DO progress & even develop AIDS but somehow don't die for decades (Larry Kramer also comes to mind). Interesting thing.

Yes, in the US the infection rate may be 1 in every 350 compared to 1 in every 9 in Africa, the infection rate in gay black males is 1 out of every 2! Especially in places in the south like Atlanta. So stay educated, protect yourself. This isn't just a pandemic in a far of land. It is here and rampant in certain communities.

First of all, Love that smile! Little support to ya brother. I am going on 28 years here. Was in University of H I V for bout 7 months in the beginning then graduated to AIDS College. That all began believe it or not, FRIDAY November THIRTEENTH, 1991. Some of the ones who swore I would be dead within two years or so sick I wished I was, ironically have sorry to say passed away themselves. Just goes to show, you never know. 😉😉😉
