300,000 Mile 7.3 Excursion Review

A review from start to present of the repairs performed on a 2001 Ford Excursion 7.3 diesel with 300,000 miles.

My 01 Excursion just passed 400,000 miles. I purchased it new 16 years go. So far I have burned about 26,666 gallons of fuel. When I purchased it fuel was $1.05 per gallon. I have replaced the following. Turbo, 10 injectors, 2 water pumps, 2 rear ends, 3 transmissions because it had a problem within 7,000 miles and when they fixed it they left debris in the oil cooler lines, 5 power locks, 1 window regulator, 2 locking hubs, 8 sets of tires, 2 headliners, 3 driver seat covers, 3 sets of breaks, 1 fuel line, 2 moon roofs, 2 sets of headlight bulbs, 3 windshields, 5 sets of batteries, 3 alternators, one starter The Excursion is the King of SUVs. We have stuffed it and pulled with it like no other. I don't know what we would have done without it over the years and look forward to having many more with it.

I love my Excursion selling it would be like losing a kidney! Its a v10 with 200k but is the most reliable and cost efficient truck I have ever owned. I couldn't imagine spending $60k for one of these new trucks that really don't do much better as an overall package. I paid $6k for mine 6 years ago.

I have people all the time offering to purchase mine. One guy got all upset because I would not sell it to him. I love asking other truck owners how many miles do they think my truck has at the fuel pump and auto parts store if we get to talking. Most guess a third or half of my milage and are shocked when I tell them. You could not get me to purchase a new Ford because they started making garbage in 2008. Our 09 Escape and MKX both keep having issues. Even if Ford recalls them they don't fix them right. Newest issue with both is the ABS modules need replacing. What is the changes that both vehicles would need that replaced at a little over 100,000 miles? I had to replace the steering column on the Escape after Ford did their recall re-programing of it. Then I had to sue them to recoup the money. Same thing is going to happen with the ABS issues on both cars. Ford knows well that they put defective products in their vehicals and they don't care. I think they do it to make the dealers happy because most people will not say anything and will pay to fix them.

You keep that excursion, we have had ours since 2004. Will not part with it they will never make big tanks like this again. I did put a big subwoofer in the back. I have to say I love it. And yes I have the original injectors. I've always changed the oil every 5,000 miles. Yuppers.

As a loyal Lexus/Toyota buyer it's good to see a vehicle made by Ford be so durable. Seeing any Ford go 300k is a treat. Well done sir. It's all about good regular maintenance and the vehicle will take care of you. Even in my Lexus I change out major items like water pump, spark plugs, belts, starter, alternator hoses at 200k to keep everything sharp. Every vehicle I've had has gone passed 300k+ miles. In fact just seen my old Toyota sienna I sold locally yesterday running around town. That one had 336k. Raising a glass to 500k for you!

My grandpa bought a F250 7.3 brand new in 2001, its been all over the country. had a few similar issues, trans went out and around 150k, and he just did a water pump it last year, batteries and alternator the year before I believe. ive done several oil changes on it. I believe he has around 250k on it now, still runs just like it should! He also has the K&N intake on his, and is very happy with it. 5" exhaust and a hypertech tuner, usually on level 2 or 3. He still has the original injectors, etc, as well, as far as I know. Always runs the Michelin tires as well. Long live the 7.3!

You can try to tighten the steering play by adjusting the steering box pinion gear....loosen the nut on top of the box and turn the screw about 1/4 turn retighten the nut ...test drive repeat as necessary. 1/4 turn only per test.

My father has the same model. It has over 500K miles and it's still running. Only major mechanical fix was the transmission. Only because when I was a kid, he let me borrow it and I put it in park while it was still moving about 10mph. Looking to buy one for myself.

I love that you guys used it as designed. It was intended to be a family suv that can be worked harder than a typical SUV. I have experience with a V10. 200k finally had a few issues like exhaust manifolds and door locks. Great truck, used as a church van, family car, and construction crew truck

I'm at 250k with mine. I change the oil regularly. The coolant, belt and hoses every six years. I've replaced all the leaking O rings including injector O rings. Still on the stock injectors. It does have a new set of glow plugs and the passenger side glow plug harness. Awesome rig. 7.3 is the best

Wow! I was rear ended by a 2005 Excursion. I was in a F150 with approx. 300 lbs of soggy oak wood planks in the bed. Would have probably killed me if the wood didn't stop the momentum. I have a fractured C2, was unconscious over half hour, lawyers won't challenge the off duty police driving or the off duty police first on the scene. No pictures. Other driver refused treatment. Was permitted to go home no breath test. No one called my wife for two hrs. Have been on lmtd disblty for four weeks. One more week then eval and hope back to work. Just checking on Excursion vids. To get proof he was able to maneuver on icy bridge and go around me or slow down and not nearly crush me if not for the wood in bed of truck. Great vehicle. I should be dead. Thank God. For small miracles.

My 02, Purchased new and just turned 87,000 miles and still in mint condition. Many updates and gets 17mpg city and over 20 highway, depends on how much I push the old foot feed. It sits in an air conditioned garage.

They've gotten back to this. I've seen 6.2L v8 trucks turn in miles nicely. 3.5 EcoBoost can be reliable if owners treat the thing right. 3.7L v6 is good, 6.7 disel is fantastic, just as reliable as 7.3 with double the power and torque

ive gotta say, im happy with my 7.3 has 170k on it, as far as i know it still has the original black CPS, injectors, turbo, no tuner has ever been on it, ive been using valvoline premium blue 15w40 and it seems to like it better than the rotella, fired right up unplugged below 0F outside with out issue. had the alternator replaced on it when i bought it. just took it in on monday to get the transmission rebuilt as far as i know its the factory installed transmission. it still drives but the converter has been rattling and ever since it started rattling, its been giving me fits in stop and go traffic, ive somewhat lost reverse a couple of times, one i had to keep the rpms up to keep it in reverse or it would drop back out, a second it went it and then just dropped out and wouldnt go back in reverse, ive had it start off in second gear, no slippage, and ive had the converter stop rattling after driving it put it in reverse, rattle goes away reverse grab hard like the lock up cluch in the converter is dragging and the engine bog down and trans temp starts to rise rapidly. stop and go traffic it will shift hard sometimes soft, sometimes very delayed. ive taken it to different shops all say it doesnt need anything nothing is wrong with it. but this most recent shop im still waiting to hear what they say. but with 170k i told them when i dropped it off its just best to rebuild it. other than that its been a great truck.

My 7.3 threw a rod through the block at 250K. Had plenty of problems and expensive to have fixed but liked it enough to rebuild the truck. New motor all new parts on the way did it myself so this time I can fix it myself.

Auto locking hubs still work!!!?? Mine quit in the second year. I replaced them twice then just did it manually. All the door lock actuators, some twice, drivers and front passenger power window motors, broken anti-sway bar links, steering damper hit on first off road trip so it was removed, rear engine seal (V10), dash lights burning out, 3 alternators, exhaust system cracks... I like the truck for what it is but there has always been something minor not working on it, even as a new vehicle. Lots of warranty work done. Currently at 210,000 kms (130,000 miles) and has been under a cover beside my house for the past 8 years. Maybe it will be worth something as a collectible in a few more years.

A quick fix and reusable head light restoration is a super high deet bug spray on plastic lights. Such as deep woods off bug spray. Justv spray on shop paper towel or micro rag. Does great and can be used in the summer. Amazing video the excursion is one of my dreams vehicles. I'm about to do a review on my 94 civic hatch DX 1.5 16v with currently 308,169 I am the second owner purchased car in june 15' with 284,527 miles besides the lack of exhaust absolutely zero problems besides general maintenance.

Assuming the alternator is of a similar design to mine... The voltage regulator is inside the alternator. It takes the hit and burns out. The windings should still be good.

My Grandma has had a black Eddie Bauer edition fully loaded since new off the Ford lot. Brilliant SUV. No engine trouble and made for a great road trip to Disneyland with 30 foot railer in town and all 8 seats and the trunk filled up! She was going to get a navigator but it was too small. If only there was a Lincoln version of the excursion that would be a TRUE pimp mobile!

2001 X with 200K miles. AFE Stage II air cleaner system and Superchip tuner on safe tow. CFM intake manifold. Only fixes have been alternator replacement, ball joints with Moog joints, Bilstien shocks. Standard brake jobs, tires, synthetic oil in trans and engine. Original injectors, HPOP, etc. Still runs like a Swiss watch. Nothing else done and will keep it until it dies...if that ever happens.

The bottom line is the best lubricants and clean anti freez will make anything last the longest,even the stuff that was not built as good as others will last much longer...Old Chevy 305s were not great but some man said they he used Amsoil in it back in the 70s and never had problems with the engine..I am not advertising for Ams,but my take is the good lubes will take up slack for small defects and lower quality issues sometimes...

I have a 2001 73. The only major thing we've been to it is a transmission rebuild I think it was 265,000 mi. And a couple of sensors. The thing still runs like a clock. It's at 300,000 miles.

when you go to fix your steering play. check the shaft input shift from the wheel to the box. I just had to do my truck 97 at 285k. and where the to shafts come together. to make up the collapsible shaft for a wreck have gone bad. the box was actually fine and still running it.

Father in-law has a 2000 f350 7.3L with 465k on it. its on it second transmission, a couple oil lines replaced, power door locks dont work, and the glow plugs are week. We live in south texas so cold hasnt been too much of an issue. It starts up everytime and pulls EVERYTHING.

Its not necessarily mileage that wears vehicles out and causes other problems, but is how something is used and how your lubrication that you use is. Most all automatic transmissions would last forever if people would put them in neutral at red lights and stop taking off hard. Plus only mater mechanics like myself realize that once a warranty is up on a vehicle you start using other science on your lubricants because lubricant specifications are for a whole countries variable weather temperature and is to protect the auto makers best. Such as my 2002 supercrew cab ford f150 calls for 5w 20 oil for the engine LMAOROTF !!!!. Not in Houston Texas people! I use 20w50 and mine runs perfect at 182,000 miles. But manufacturers put 5w 20 on that oil cap back then only because they figured some guy might drive to Ohio or Michigan and could cause engine damage in that severe cold so they just wanted to protect their 36k interest as in with that low weight oil even in Houston Tx the engine would last 80k miles. So oil weights are only an overall corporate interest of country wide considerations from a conference room full of men wearing suits and not engineers. Also automatic transmissions in our heat where I live will last if you add one half quart of straight non detergent 40 weight oil and two tablespoons of same to power steering. Its all about your climate folks

+DanielJagerFilms how many miles do you get out of this truck when it comes to fuel consumption? By the way I thought diesels get the oil changed every 10,000 to 15,000 miles. I guess that only goes for big commercial sized vehicles.

I have a 2001 f350 7.3 that has 350,000 with all original parts. I havent changed anything. Still using it to this day.

Look up powerstrokehelp on youtube and do the archoil challenge..Little on the expensive side but he and other people have had very great success with it it's an oil stabilizer and fuel additive he is a very smart guy when it comes to powerstrokes

I live right next to bill hewit. Met him many times. His shop repairs so many powerstrokes he has like 6 in there at a time. Hes a diesel master mechanic by the way.

"not powerful"... why that? also how about the newer 6.0? i read something about it having 750 (!) Nm of torque. is it that long living too? because i want one. so bad. the V10 sounds amazing and seems fine too, the 7.3 diesel is illegal in germany, doesnt meet the emission standarts, the 6.0 and the V10 have to get reworked too but not as hard. anyway, could you say something about them too?

I recently got a 00 excursion v10 with the 4.30 from the factory and 122k miles for $4.5k. I'm contemplating buying an 01 excursion limited with the 7.3 with 275k for the same price. A friend of mine whose in his 80's is selling it and is the only owner and has always maintained at the dealership. Do you recommend I make the jump or stick with my v10?

Daniel do you have any thoughts on the 6.8 v10 that was offered back then? I just picked a 1 owner 2000 excursion Eddie Bauer with 185k at auction. It’s in phenom condition. Seats and interior look to have never been sat on. Carpet unused. Not sure how they pulled this off for 17yrs. But I just don’t know much about the 6.8 other than it drinks gas But I love it so much I don’t care. Gas can go to a dollar a drop and I would drive this thing. Wish I could have found a 7.3 like your pops. But this was best I could do

those seats didnt crack because its old leather or use they cracked because they weren't properly cleaned and saturated in dirt and grease with weather fluctuation is what caused them to crack, go ahead and use leather care cleaner and conditioner on them 2-3 times a year and they'll stay nice

Hi nice review. And nice truck I have 97 OBS f250 heavyduty supercab 8foot bed 4+4 351 wins or best truck I ever owned never left me on the side of the road just always did the recommended maintainace 170,000 miles and still going strong. Ford really fucked up by not making trucks like the ones they used to make in the late 80's and 90's. 302 was a great engine also they stoped making those engines because they were bulletproof. Great video. I was just curious if you ever had issues with spider gears for the rear differential and if you ever changed axle fluids (rear, front), because most people never bother to do that and boy, they are so, so wrong. Thanks for answering in advance.
