On this episode of Ultimate Barrier Testing, we will be comparing the performance of the 300 Blackout to the 7.62x39 on 4 different targets. Each target is worth 25 points, for a grand total of 100 points. Whichever cartridge ends up with the highest score will be the winner. Testing was setup at 50 yards. Thanks for watching!

40 years ago, I used Chinese steel-cored, steel-jacked 7.62X39 ammo in my SKS. It was an absolute beast at penetration. Though not technically AP ammo because of its soft steel core, it would pierce 5/8 inch hot-rolled plate and nearly go through 3/4.

Technically it is AP ammo, now communist block standards & nato standards are different & are modified with time, also companies selling non military ammo with similar specs advertise as AP ammo, Amour piercing was originally designated as personal body armour of the time including combat helmuts 🍻 Ret Vet

@@viktormogilin307 Maybe technically AP but the steel core was dead soft. I couldn't even get a Rockwell C reading. The steel was there only because it was cheaper than lead. The bullets were so poorly soldered together that they couldn't shoot in a group, I thought it was the SKS until I tried some Russian military ammo.

The strength of 300blk is that it can have a super wide range of loadings and applications. But that also is its downfall since some people will improperly compare soft led subs designed for maxium energy transfer to steel core 7.62x39. If you get the right loading, 300blk can be a very good barrier penetrator.

When doing these tests, I think you need to keep in mind the tests done by Mythbusters on shooting targets underwater; The bullets with MORE energy were stopped MUCH faster than bullets with lower energy. The .50 BMG disintegrated after less than a foot of water! The 5.56x45 did the same, so too did the 7.62x39. The 9mil, on the other hand, was able to penetrate about 5 feet of water, before losing all its energy. The bullet remained intact, while the more powerful rifle rounds were shredded. The sand here seems to be an acceptable substitute for water, in that the results appear the same.

It's interesting that with bows, a 50% let-off bow has better range and energy on target than one with, say, an 80% let-off. I'm sure there's some physics that explains that, but I failed chemistry class in HS, so.....yeah.

The 300 blackout is scary quiet both firing with a suppressor and you can hardly hear the bullet move through the air when being fired out from a distance, it was one the calibers Garande Thumb used to record how it sounds to be fired at and they were actually hiding in a safe spot so they could hear and react to it first-hand. The .45 ACP made some of the most noise as it goes through the air. It's also powerful because of the size and weight of the bullet, good down range. It's so good for it's intended purpose.

.300 blackout is the most underrated round. It can take Deer better than 5.56 and on par with 7.62x39. It can penetrate (within 200 yards) just as well as 7.62x39. It has a much wider range of bullet types (VMAX, Polymer, Soft Point, Hollow, Subsonic, and Supersonic). About the same weight as 5.56 and it fits 5.56 magazines. The velocity similarities are expected considering the 300 Blackout was originally designed to more or less mimic 7.62x39 ballistics (for supers). I believe 110 gr to 125 gr is a great sweet spot for 300 Blackout supers. Unfortunately a lot of people use 140 - 150 gr. They tend to be poor performers in every way compared to the light supers and heavy subs.

@@joshrandall3632 You are likely referring to the 300 Whisper (which the Blackout took a lot of inspiration from). The Blackout was designed in 2009 by AAC, and one of the core requirements for the round was to shoot both super and subsonic rounds (specifically without any gas system adjustments). Some other requirements were that it had to work in STANAG mags in an AR patterned rifle, which knocked out the 7.62x39 as a contender.
@joshrandall3632

@@JabariHunt No, the Whisper was renamed in '09 so it could be made commercially available. The designer never had any aspirations of competing with the x39, for "supers" or otherwise. With subsonic rounds, it duplicates the .45 ACP, but from a heavier, bulkier package. Hope this helps.

I run similar bullet weights in each, 154gr in 7.62x39 and 150gr in the 300. They both do the job on all Florida game, but the 7.62x39 does it with more authority and for cheaper. I bought 400rds of 154gr JSP for my 7.62x39 for the same price as 80rds of .300 blackout 150gr JSPs. If you're running suppressed obviously there are some nice .300 blackout loads that make a lot of sense. Here's a good way to change anyone's mind and make .300 Blackout better at the same time, though it will involve some money, materials, tools and time. First going to need a couple of Crucibles and a Steel melting pot (melting pot is just in case, you decide you want to add a Steel, Aluminum, or other metal for a core, generally going to use a Crucible for melting a soft metal for a general Bullet core ), going to need molds to make solid Bullets, and molds for making Full Metal Jacketed Bullets, going to need Bronze for either Bullet type and Lead or Fools Gold (good for Lead free zones and has same properties as Gold and just as abundant as Lead) for regular FMJ Bullet cores, going to need a decent Rock Tumbler or Sonic Vibrating Cleaning Rig for deburring and smoothing up the bullets, going to need a welder and cooper wires for the Jacketed Bullet Mold (going to make it so you can Electro Bond the Jacketed Bullets together. I suggest looking up how to make an Electro Bonding Rig, that's how I made mine it's not difficult and has other applications), lastly going to need a proper ammo press. Solid Bullets are simple, Melt Bronze and when melted pour into mold, let cool, throw into Rock Tumbler or Sonic Cleaner Rig (don't use water or any other liquid in the Sonic Cleaner Rig use the same type of deburring and polishing stones one would use for the Rock Tumbler), use ammo press to make ammo like normal ammo bench use and done for Solid Bullets. Jacketed Bullets are a little more difficult and require extra steps and care. Melt Bronze in Crucible. If you want the Bullet to have a bit more strength add some Aluminum to the Bronze, or some Industrial Strength Synthetic Diamond Dust (can get that from certain types of Commercial Drill bits, though this will take time and effort), or both materials to the Bronze. A word of caution here this Bronzium mix will tear a Barrel up if used for the Bullet's Jacket, using it as a core, or even a base core surrounded by a Inner Jacket (Jacketed Bullets with a soft metal inside underneath a Jacket with a tougher core of harder metal of Bronzium, Steel, Aluminum, or other hard metal) will be just fine on Gun Barrels. Pour into melted Bronze into Jacket Mold and set to the side and let cool. While the Jacket metal is cooling melt some Lead or Fools Gold in the Crucible, when it's melted pour into the FMJ core mold. When both Jackets and Cores are cool, put into the FMJ mold (Top Bullet Jacket half, then Soft Core or Outer Soft Core Half followed by Penetrator Inner Core if making a Penetrator FMJ Bullet, which is made almost the same way as an FMJ Bullet, requires the Core to be made in half's instead of a whole in order to accommodate a hard dense metal for a Penetrator Core . Followed by other Outer Soft Core Half, then the Bottom Bullet Jacket Half). Attach FMJ Mold halves, connect mold to Car Batteries (remember to place mold on a couple of concrete blocks and be careful as electricity is dangerous but useful), turn on for a few seconds (place concrete blocks or bricks evenly across top of mold to add pressure for a good bond). Last step is to take FMJ's to an Ammo Press and make ammo as usual.

That is not entirely true. With 16 inch barrels, 30-30 has a 150gr bullet travelling about 2300fps, 300blk achieves that velocity too, maybe even a few dozen fps more, but with a 110gr bullet, which makes it significantly weaker. Also, You gotta consider the fact that most 30-30 deer rifles have longer barrels than 16 inches, while 300 blk options practically end at that barrel length, which makes the power gap between a 300blk AR-15 and your "grandpa approved" 30-30 lever action rifle even bigger. Now, I'm not saying 300blk won't take down an elk if you really want it too, (it's all about shot placement, after all) But it's not equivalent to 30-30 at all.

And, from what I'm seeing, between the .300 BO & the 7.62x39, it essentially comes down to price and availability of ammo...in my humble opinion, of course🤷‍♂ Unless there's something I missed...(and knowing me, that's a definite possibility!)

Ak beats 300 until you compare 8in barrel to 8in barrel. 300 shines in short setups and is versatile with ammo weight and velocity. It's cool but I have yet to use mine for any kind of hunting. Suppose it could make a nice compact truck gun or home defense And to be fair I don't have any of my aks set up for hunting either lol. I don't like comparing calibers or rifles without context. Who's using it and what for is the question that needs to be addressed.

Speaking of cost, what made 223/556 jump up to even higher prices than just two months ago? I ordered two cases two months ago, placed an order yesterday and it was $115 more per case! Standard practice ammo. Also the four vendors I use only had one brand for case purchases. Maybe I need to get into archery

@@HWG-wm8ld The exact cause of 556 jumping up is not clear but a mix of 1. Ongoing Ukraine invasion taking some (ukies got a lot of 5.56 guns given to them) 2. Rumors of US Mil stocking up (lake city supposedly stopped civ contracts to exclusively support mil) 3. Now israel gaza invasion diverting some (plus scaring foreign jews into stocking up due to retaliation fears) 4. To an extent, ammo sellers/distributors trying to scare up hikes to print money again like they did with covid 5. Supply chain still reeling a bit from covid in general (primers still not down)

Sir, I really enjoy your videos and I'm subscribed but I think it's time for some constructive criticism right about now. Since I know that you love to hate on the 300 BLK, I'd like to point out something important. The 300 BLK was designed to run efficiently IN SHORT BARRELS LESS THAN 11 INCHES TO FACILITATE ATTACHING A SUPPRESSOR WITHOUT ENDING UP WITH A MUSKET. That's why that cartridge was designed. It doesn't have as much to do with "subsonic ammo" as people think it does. It's creation has been largely responsible for the huge increase in suppressor sales in the last ten years or so. People want a rifle with a suppressor that's the same length as a rifle without a suppressor. Add in the confusion of the brace fiasco and here we are. If you conduct the test with the same two calibers again and use 9 inch barreled rifles for both, then you'll get a real world result, if you can get the AK to run long enough to finish the test. If you want to shoot .30 caliber in a 16 inch barreled AR, then 300 BLK isn't what anybody with a brain would be shooting. 300 HAMR or even 7.62x39 would be better options. Don't try mud bogging in a Ferrari. That's not what it was intended to do.

And yet, it seems to be pretty popular for exactly what the "brainless" people desire: An AR platform equal to 7.62x39 AK's. Which.. this more or less is.
