in reality 7-8000 greeks fought against about 300.000 persians. After several days of battle a traitor showed a detour to persians. In order to avoid to be sorrounded, greek generals decided to withdraw all the troups; only Leonida his 300 spartans and 700 other greeks remained holding the front. So they permitted to others to escape and they saved the greek army. They were more heroic than in the movie

Probably had another...I sure wouldn't give up my weapon like that :-P And since the Spartans were so well organized, it makes sense that they would prepare for this. I read somewhere that certain armies always brought two spears to battle...when the enemy charged, they'd throw their first spears, and then use their other for hand-to-hand combat.

Shields were considered an honour by Spartans. In fact if a Spartan dropped his shield he was dishonoured. He could drop his sword or spear but not his shield cuz it was sacred. That's because Spartans used shields not only to protect theirselves but also the man to the left of them. You can see that in the scenes with the phalanx formation.

Why would the Spartans go to war initially with only 300 men against that multitude. If they went with an army of theirs, Leonardis wouldn't have died together with those 300 men. Well, at least, the Persians were eventually prevented from invading Greece according to History.

Xerxes sent a demand to Leonidas that he should surrender his arms forthwith. The Spartan king made a "laconic" reply that rings out like Travis' defiant cannon shot: "Molòn lábe"-"Come and take them." That my fiends is why Thermopylae is not just Greece's Alamo but the Worlds.
@30thMarch15 жыл бұрын
You obviously haven't undertood my comment. The 300 Spartans died there when covering the RETREAT of the rest of the Greek army. The Spartans could not have possibly held the whole persian army for very long, no matter how good soldiers they were. So what I'm trying to say - there were about 10000 Greeks at Thermopylae but after the Persians found a way to get around them, the army had to retreat and so the 300 Spartans stayed, just to give the Greeks some time to get away.
