The number one question we get about RWD RC Drifting...how cheaply can we get into it? Nobody ever asks the question about a top-shelf build.
Enter the Sakura D5S.
This chassis really sparked this conversation again for me. At less than $100, it is the cheapest RWD drift chassis on the market. Especially when you consider it even comes with tires, wheels, a pinion gear, and magnetic body mount in the box!!!!
The goal with this build: get drifting for less $$$ than the MST RMX2.0 RTR. You can frequently find it for $360-370. Example: amzn.to/3cRAs39
First, get the Sakura D5S chassis: rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53...
What I used in this video ($328 build)
- Flysky GT3C: amzn.to/3jlJgkq
- Savox SC-1251MG servo: amzn.to/2Gt3Z6Y
- Boom Racing Gyro: www.boomracingrc.com/high-sta...
- Hobbywing 1080 ESC: amzn.to/3kZiEGb
- Hackmotor 12T motor: amzn.to/3jouKsc
- CoolPlay rc body: amzn.to/36hpFy5
What I normally use in this chassis:
- Futaba 4PM: rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53...
- Savox SC-1251MG servo: amzn.to/2Gt3Z6Y
- Futaba GYD450 gyro: rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53...
- Hobbywing XR Pro ESC: amzn.to/3n89SaT
- Hobbywing 10.5T Bandit motor: amzn.to/3n8Sm62

@@guerilladk1000 Yes, you can use whatever electronics you have laying around to get started. The only drawback is that motor is going to be FAST, which will make mid-corner control a little harder. In the long run, you will want a powerful ESC with some specific tuning options, but for now - just get it running!

The RMX vs Sakura is a difficult question. The RMX kit vs Sakura kit - I would go with the Sakura. RMX RTR vs Sakura kit...depends much more on budget and what parts you already have. Currently doing the same budget style for all three of my kids with longevity in mind for a couple of years, surpass 13.5t motor, hobbywing 60a esc, afrc gyro, omg servo and flysky gt3c tx but have decided to spend the extra on reve d rdx chassis since the reviews seem to be soo good on it out of the box
@RoadsideRC
@RoadsideRC Жыл бұрын
That is a fun idea!!! Honestly - I would recommend you spend that extra money on a better gyro instead of on the chassis. If you go with the Sakura D5 MRv2 chassis, the cost is literally half of the ReveD RDX...x3! That is enough money to upgrade all 3 cars to Futaba 3PV controllers and upgrade to a GYD470 gyro. That would be my suggestion.

After running a 27t 540 brushed setup in one for a few weeks, slap a bigger pinion on there. That 550 has mountains of torque and there's no grip so you can get that higher RPM easily by gearing up. And I had the same problem mounting the motor, I ended up milling a new slot in the motor plate.

Read elsewhere that some pp find issues with the stock steering in how it touches wheels? and replaced the steering arms etc or offset wheels etc? i know you mentioned they run great out of box months before but wondering if you've encountered similar issues or if any other necessary upgrade parts to replace from stock? I'm not racing comp or anything but just want to drift without issues like wheel rubbing against parts on full steer for example. Would appreciate more advice pls! 🙂

Great! Glad you are picking up a D5S kit. I still think it is really good. Yes, with the stock wheels, it rubbed the turnbuckles at full lock. However, I swapped wheels almost immediately to match the body I was running, so don't have that issue. I would suggest picking up a different set of wheels to help with this. I used MST adjustable offset wheels. However, you might want to check, as I believe the version 2 might have solved this.

Those parts you linked would not really be much if an upgrade. If you already have that 13T motor and brushed ESC, just start there. Get it running and practice that way first. @RoadsideRC 2 жыл бұрын
I would like to do this! Thank you for the idea. Basic concept: the smaller the number, the faster the motor will spin. This usually also means less torque.

@@RoadsideRC love the content regarding the gyro on athe RTR car video were you replace the factory gyro for something else, i have to try that on my car too!! so far the oncepts i have learned about RC drifting are: turbo and boost programming with the ESC motor type suspension setup gyro setup the car doesn tneed top aceleration since you are cornering, but it neeeds to be controllable and i think that setting up the gyro is key for slow but smooth driftingin the beggining along with suspencion setup!

What battery would you recommend for the d5s
@RoadsideRC

I run some standard 2S shorty packs. They don't fit in under the battery hold down tabs, but I have not had an issue with them coming out either.

The belt version is a clone, not a real 3Racing D5. They have MANY issues. I honestly think you would be better spending $100 and getting a real D5 from Super-G online store.

That was a very weird choice of ESC and combo. First, this is a good ESC, but brushed is not good in a drifter, they just overheat. If you want cheap get a $30 aliexpress brushless combo or a $40 sensored combo. There’s also pretty nice SPT short servos for $12.
@RoadsideRC
@RoadsideRC 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips! I have never purchased stuff from aliexpress. This combo will end up in another rc we have, so it was serving dual purposes. While goal was just to show that you could get the car running for $300. Do you have experience with the MST brushed RMX yet? I'd be curious what their specs are on it.

Roadside RC In our group a couple of people use these mega cheap Chinese combos an they work great, I ordered one and it arrived dead. Sensorless brushless is not great, but it works and it is very very cheap. People obsess over mega fast servos but so far we havent really confirmed they are that important. I like the channel a lot, good stuff!

Thanks! Agree with the servo findings, especially in the Sakura D5S. The steering system is just so fast that the servo barely moves!

Would 190mm bodies work on this car?
@RoadsideRC
@RoadsideRC 2 жыл бұрын
You really need to go with 200mm. If you have a 190mm, you might be able to add fender flares to cover the tires.

Can you use the flysky with a futaba gyro?
@RoadsideRC
@RoadsideRC 2 жыл бұрын
Yes - but only partially. the Flysky has a discrete 3rd channel that lets you control the gyro gain, but is unable to trigger the AVCS mode in the Futaba gyro to get the maximum benefit.
@DoubleJEveryDay
@DoubleJEveryDay 2 жыл бұрын
Is there a gyro similar to the futaba brand that will would work with the flysky or another transmitter that works with the futaba gyro you recommend besides the futaba transmitter. Only reason is because i think the link you put for the boom one is out of stock right now but want to get a best one that works with the flysky or get the most affordable one to use with the futaba gyro
@RoadsideRC
@RoadsideRC 2 жыл бұрын
@@DoubleJEveryDay In my experience, the Futaba gyro and Futaba controller pairing are key. Yes - you can use many other controllers, but unless they can trigger the AVCS mode in the Futaba gyro, you don't get the full use of the gyro. Don't skimp on the gyro. Get the good one. At our recent drift night, someone was using one of the Radiolink transmitters. I am not personally a fan, but it appeared it would work for controlling the Futaba gyro. I don't know for sure though, so don't want you wasting your money. I got both of my Futaba 4-channel transmitters from eBay for $100-$150.

@RoadsideRC 2 жыл бұрын
That is the Power HD gyro...and almost any gyro for that matter. That is just gyro wobble when you turn the sensitivity up too high. That is part of the magic of the futaba gyro - you can trigger the AVCS mode that dramatically reduces gyro wobble.

Rmx 2.0 rtr Vs D5s?
@RoadsideRC
@RoadsideRC 3 жыл бұрын
For just starting, the RMX RTR is almost a no brainer. It just makes life so simple, and drifts GREAT with a better gyro (I have a video on that also). However, once more into the hobby, the D5S with proper electronics (not as much like you see here with the brushed motor) is faster than the RMX.
