Watching this again. It’s so interesting how you see things differently depending on what your needs are. 9 months ago when this came out I really liked the bench. But now I’m in a different situation. I think as woodworkers we are always striving to make our shops more efficient. And a lot of times the layout is ever changing. Right now I’m trying to plan a new layout. One of the things I plan to build is a workbench. While Im super lucky to have a good size shop…. It’s not a typical shape and has some things to work around which limits where tools are. With each layout I’m always left with…. Where do I put my router table. AND… to add to that… I’m also wanting to upgrade my router table and haven’t settled on what. This workbench solves a couple of issues for me. I’m definitely going to have to consider this in my plans.

Thank you for this! Being a beginner, I always find inspiration here in the US from your shop designs. Even if I’m starting with something even smaller and more basic, I really like being able to see what’s possible sooner rather than later. Woodworking is a hobby for me to create for myself and close family and friends and be a little self reliant. And as a hobby I like the idea of being able to have a creative space that’s functional and more importantly-a joy to spend time in. Your designs check those boxes for me. As my means allow I’ll be buying your plans soon enough and look forward to more ideas and inspiration to come.

Awesome. Great bench. I’ve got a small shop. I’ve been looking for a bench that is multifunctional. 1) MFT dog hole system, 2) European style vises for planing and hand tools, 3) use as an out feed table for my table saw, and 4) router table. So far, I like your design the most. It’s nice looking and efficient. I think I can Tweak it to make it work for me. I’ll be buying those plans for sure. Keep them coming. I’ll buy the plans for your drill press table when they become available as well. I also really like your miter saw station, but I don’t have a Kapex and probably won’t get one. I like the Makita better. Keep it up Dennis, I love your channel. Now if I could get that colored MDF here in the USA for a decent price, I’d be accenting every thing with blue MDF. I like your design method with the plywood beams. I built an outfeed table with an MDF top and 90 degree side wall because of your previous videos. In the US I had to use regular MDF and shellack finish. I probably won't do MDF again. It isn't very durable. Maybe the black that you use is better. As for the frame, years ago I built an assembly table ago with construction lumber. I laminated after jointing and planing in the same method. I actually like it better because of the weight and it has stayed pretty stable and I really like it. Yours is a great build and probably easier for beginners and you don't need a jointer or planer. Another great video.

Hi Dennis, as you will hopefully remember, I have built three Workbenches now to your designs in my small workshop. Every time I walk into my workshop I can't believe that I built them because of how good they look and that is all down to your expert advice and guidance. I now try to keep my workshop as tidy as I can so it is easily usable when I want to use it. I have yet to build drawers under my workbenches and this has been delayed mainly because of the difficulty in obtaining Birch Throughout plywood so will have to use some less quality plywood just so I can get things finnished. Not sure if you have the same difficulty in obtaining Birch Throughout Plywood in the Netherlands but it has made things very difficult for a lot of projects. Hopefully the world will get back to normal soon for everyone's sake. Keep up the great work. 👏👏👏👏👏

One concern I have with MDF worktop is that over time the forces from hold downs and other clamping tools that cause a significant load on the sidewalls of the dog holes, will cause the holes to wear and the precision and accuracy will suffer. I have a thought that I haven't tried yet, but which might be worth exploring. After drilling the dog holes to 20mm go back with a 25mm forstner bit (probably with a drill guide that can be clamped in place to keep the bit centered) and make the holes larger. A jig with a 20mm dowel and a 25mm disk centered on the dowel and screwed or brad nailed to the dowel would allow a circle to be drawn on the worktop to make sure the 25mm hole is centered on the original 20mm. Then tape off the bottoms of the holes and then fill them with epoxy. After the epoxy has set, drill the dog holes to 20mm using the setup jig as if it was the first time drilling the dog holes. The result will be an epoxy lining of 2mm - 2.5mm thick. I would think that would give a much more durable surface. Or maybe it is just good enough to tape off the bottom of the dog holes and then slather thick epoxy on the walls so that the fibers of the MDF soak up as much epoxy as they can hold. Then use the setup jig again to redrill the holes to clean off any epoxy that didn't soak into the MDF or any swelling of the MDF. Do you think that this might be worth doing, or does the MDF hold up just fine and I am just overthinking this?

Hi Daniel, I find the Nailer a very nice tool, but you can do perfectly without it. Just be careful with clamping. I would clamp first with not too much pressure, after 2 minutes increase the pressure. I like the Enjoywood that I get from Banggood very much. It is still a bit affordable, but you get a lot for the money. Good Luck!

Dennis, Wonderful bench. I was surprised to see you have added a second layer to the top. Doesn't that eliminate to use of the Festool style "L" clamps that need clearance to get the elbow through the holes? Do you modify the bottom on each hole or just don't use those style of attachments?
@HookedonWood
@HookedonWood 8 ай бұрын
Yes, you can not use them anymore. But there are enough alternatives available for affordable prices. I choose double layers for the top to create more mass and make it more of a full range workbench. Better micro vibration control and when you have to work with your planers, just more mass to make it stable.

Another great video Dennis. Do you feel the BenchDog brand is comparable to the UJK Parf Dog brand?

Short Answer: Yes. I have different accessories for one of my upcoming video about these products. I have them from BenchDogs and also from UJK. The differences are small, but big enough to prefer one over the other. Sometimes I prefer BenchDogs, sometime UJK. But I like the wide assortment of BenchDogs!

I have the same question, let’s see what you offer up?! “How do I, a novice, build this without the bench you are using to build the bench?” So not the chicken/egg but what comes 1st the bench or the bench? Now dont say one doesn’t need a bench, if so why am I building one? Lovely video and narration. Bob England

I love the work bench and watch every new video that you make, but have a question. You used a wood bottom as the slides for your drawers rather than steel drawer slides for cost. I imagine that you probably use a paste wax or similar so that the wood surfaces slide easily against each other. My question is, approximately how much weight can the drawer contain before the friction of wood against wood becomes an issue. I am hoping you see my question and can orovide some kind of guess on the weight as this will help me determine if I will be able to purchase/use your plans without some sort of modification.

Hi Roger, I do not know how much weight, but I have a drawer where I place my screws stock and that is pretty heavy. Of course you can get this open but you feel there is more friction. Because it is stock, I do not use that regularly so it is not a problem. You also have to take into account that the bottom is 9mm MDF and will have a limit in weight also. When the bottom holds it, sliding is not problem. But when you use it for heavy tools, stock or whatever, I would opt for steel sliders. This is not a better alternative than steel sliders, but it makes the proces so much easier en the costs so much lower. I rather have these sliders and buy a INCRA Fence for the money I saved.

Gaaf Dennis. Kijk al weer uit naar je volgende video. Waar koop jij eigenlijk het RZ dusk mask en de filters. Ik probeer die te vinden bij een Nederlandse webshop, of een winkel in de omgeving Arnhem. Maar nog niet gelukt

I Think so, but I do not have experience with that. I think I prefer the router though.
