I put a piece of cardboard on the back of the radiator to avoid dinging it when working around that area. Works well apart from remembering to remove it when you're finished!

See a lot of that in Canada where they put cardboard in front of the rad for better heating - only forgetting to remove it in spring!

Two tips for those pully bolts and getting them off. 1. Get them off and replace then with 8m x 20s. These bolts come with a 13mm head put a extra nut on the bolt then you have a double depth 13mm bolt to pinch up & next time remove easier. 2. when you get the pully off put two 5-6mm holes through the face of the pully (1 at 12 and the other at 6 o clock) That way you can put a screwdriver through the pully and lock against the motor block thus you can lock the pully when tightening the bolts on the pully up & next time taking the bolts out.

Thanks for that young felah, you gave us a good example why you should use a tension wrench. On that note haven't people changed towards us seniors, when l went to the supermarket everyone kept away from me and didn't talk and when you go in,there is a chick with rubber gloves and spray bottle waitng for you to enter,of cause l said to her l already had my prostate done. Seniors get no respect these days😁

G'Day Mike. Here I was punting that there was going to be no gasket at, just some 'silly-con'. But when you stated that the main three bolts were almost just finger tight it was face palm time because obviously a rock-ape had done the work prior and therefore didn't understand the difference between what should and shouldn't be tightened right up!

Crazy eh? The pulley bolts must be 100Nm and 2 Nm for the gasket. No wonder LR's have a bad rap for reliability I wonder what is being taught at trade school?

On hold for a few reason - the garage where it is stored has no access until mid April when all the snow has gone and the land dried out and also with the virus thing I may be able to negotiate a better price, as there will be a lot of Defenders on the market as folk will be strapped for cash

Never seen the 300tdi front end, a bit easier than the 200tdi. Such a bugger to do the P gasket on them. always best to run a bottom tap in those 3 long bolt holes in the block as you do.

The castings are so thin, and as silicone has been used before, best clean them out!
