Britannica Restorations Ltd unfortunately I still don't have my Landy l, but it's something wich will happen. Although I've "had a go" many times, since I have an old Ford Transit, also have already swapped an engine head and other services, I can still learn a lot from Your videos!

Mike, I came across something at a trade show recently and thought I would give it a go. It is another easy out tool. (They are never easy..) It is a tapered square shaft. You drill a hole and bang it in the same as we do abusing torx. Pop a spanner or adjustable on and turn. If it slips, get a bigger hammer. If you see a set, buy them
@BritannicaRestorations4 жыл бұрын
I find the problem of tapered 'easy outs' is they can expand the stud and make it tighter to get out - there are parallel easy outs the same but you have to have the right size drill
@harveysmith1004 жыл бұрын
@@BritannicaRestorations I take you point Mike. They can do that. The comment about a bigger hammer would cause this!! I think the bottom line is, there is no easy solution, we just have to have plenty of tool options and a good arenal of swear words.

Over in the "TDI" group ( small german cars ) , it is fashion to replace the stretch bolts with studs bolts . This to get a better tight torque and also more precise , and they can be reused! Since replacing head gasket is under routine maintenance 🙂, perhaps this could be an improvement?

Well, if it were a good idea, then someone would have made them by now - for a Defender! Fat chance of getting the head off in a Discover or Range Rover - they are bad enough with bolts!

Thanks for all your videos on the 300 tdi. Got a head and timing belt to change over Christmas on my discovery... 👍

Britannica Restorations Ltd Just want to say thank you very much for all the help from the videos Mike 👍. Got the head and cam belt done as well as a few other job, taken it for a test run this evening and all good. Unfortunately heads and cam belts don’t appear very often on steam trains which get paid to fix 😛😃

Hello Mike, i like you video’s . You are a great mechanic. I want to restore a defender 90 TD5 or 300 tdi in the near future. What would-be a good book to buy with technical information or can i find everything on the internet? Like to hear from you. Grtz Henkjan
@BritannicaRestorations5 жыл бұрын
Hi Grtz there are lots of videos one KZbin and if you get stuck, just ask and I may already have something I have not posted yet! As for books have a look here: www.amazon.ca/Rover-Defender-Restoration-Manual-Step/dp/0857334794 This is Amazon Canada but I am sure you can fine one in your country I have not got a copy here, so I cannot comment, but it seems to be popular Mike

Hi Mike, When you torque down the head in sequence, the first bolts that you tighten will essentially become more slack as the rest of the head is pulled down. Do you go through and double check the torques so that each bolt is holding 40Nm? Or do you just torque each bolt the one time and then move straight on to turning 60 degrees? Thanks in advance
@BritannicaRestorations2 жыл бұрын
Yes I spin through them just in case, but usually they are ok

Hello sir want to ask.Can i use a digital torque wrench to torque the head bolt's.Instead of using the traditional click type torque wrench ?
@BritannicaRestorations5 жыл бұрын
No, you need an angle gauge - they are manual or digital

Hey Mike you marked numbers 5 & 6 the wrong way round compared with what you mentioned and changed on the instructions
@BritannicaRestorations5 жыл бұрын
Bit confusing as the directions with the gasket set give 2 x number 6 bolts - turned out OK in the end

Make that LVB500220G Get the OEM gasket not the Britpart The OEM black finish is a sealer - BP is paint
@deanburditt43155 жыл бұрын
@@BritannicaRestorations Do you recommend the ERR5027 head over the later type?
@BritannicaRestorations5 жыл бұрын
The later type with 'better cooling' is a bit of a waste on the 300Tdi as it is made for the HS2.8 block - the 300Tdi block does not have the corresponding holes in the block
