Day 3 of lockdown here in U.K. Mike. So this video a much appreciated distraction. Keep them coming please, even if it is only of you sweeping the workshop floor 😂

Not sure how, but Mike you need to get in Richard Hammond's sights to refurb his 110 SW, or at least to appraise it for him. Your deadpan delivery of corrosive bad news and mechanical trauma would be an epic as he made worried owner expressions . Stay safe and be assured Sachindra is still trying to get your next Kaphi Kapa catproof coffee stuff out of Nepal.

the 300 was a great ish , engine. I belong to the era when head gaskets used to say top on them and have an arrow pointing at the front ,,,, still , at least they wernt just cut out of a sheet of copper ...

Hi Mike, When using the MLS head gasket do you tightening the head bolts after a set mileage ? The re commission of my RRC has been put on hold, The CT stations ( MOT ) are closed and my CT ran out just before Lock down in France so no exemption for me, Just heard from Paddocks they are closed for the foreseeable future. Bad times for all , Stay safe Mike.
@BritannicaRestorations4 жыл бұрын
No they do not need re tightening - I think that was back in the days of copper clad gaskets I just got a note from Britpart saying they are supplying military and emergency vehicle parts only Bearmach is open -- they called me to see if there was anything they could help me with financially that was nice

What about head bolts, reuse or replace?
@tomcpowellАй бұрын
I see you are using a 3 layer metal head gasket. Do you always fit these or are there any situations when you would fit a composite one?

Only on 200 TDI as the oil hole is in a different place

Hi Mike, when do you or don't you hone the cylinders? Can you do them with the pistons at the bottom, or is it only a prudent thing to do if you have removed the pistons. I would have expected if you take the head off, you might as well run a honing tool up and down. Not criticising, genuine interest.
@BritannicaRestorations4 жыл бұрын
I only hone when fitting new rings, so the pistons will be removed

Hey Mike can you describe the difference between the "new type" and old type head gaskets...cheers 🍻

Good idea!
@tommepham22674 жыл бұрын
Yes please Mike, we still use the composite Elring gasket. I know Landrover sell the gasket you are using. What’s the advantage?
@arbit3r3 жыл бұрын
@@tommepham2267 MLS are much stronger then composite. They will never fail, fit and forget. The issue is that the deck has to be completely flat. They are very unforgiving if there are any imperfections in the mating surfaces.

Does oiling threads affect torque specs?

Not really, but dry bolts can

I love almost everything about the 300tdi engine but it's always disappointed me that it doesn't have a crossflow head. I grew up knowing that reverse-flow heads belonged on cars like Morris Minors and Austin Allegros whereas "sporty" cars like the Escort and Capri had crossflow heads. No idea if it really makes any difference to modern engines but I still feel like reverse-flow heads belong in your grandad's Princess.

If they made a cast iron head, made it 3.5, better cooling, gear driven timing, better vac pump on the alternator and less prone to leaks it would be good - Oh wait a moment - Isuzu did that with the 3.9 4BD1T in the late 70's
@SiCrewe4 жыл бұрын
@@BritannicaRestorations I always got the feeling that LR deliberately went with "modest" diesels as a way to try and hide the weaknesses of the drive-train. Might have been nice if they'd designed a big, plodding, diesel but I'd bet that would have meant spending more money developing the transmissions too.
@BritannicaRestorations4 жыл бұрын
The 3.9 Isuzu was fitted to the Australian defenders and not a fantastic power house - I think mine is 133 BHP - but they were good old sluggers and very reliable - a word not taught at LR training school

Axel - the label has worn off but I think it is this one www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DCF815S2-12-Volt-4-Inch-Impact/dp/B0043XX88G 12 volt - been very reliable - rebuilt my building with this - came with two batteries so by the time you used one, the other was charged Great for hose clips and 4/5/6 mm bolts Mike
