Hello Mike! This is a chance to to send you a 'thank you note'. We're at the end of a 3+ year restoration of an XMOD (BATUS) 110 and finally all is well. Much of the progress in the last 18 mos. we owe to you and these KZbin productions! Eg. The truck is now leak free! The 300Tdi transplant sings! etc. etc. So, many, many thanks. Mike K. in British Columbia. ps Chris Palmer says hello.

When I first bought my Defender seven years ago, I just thought that the poor brakes were down to it being a Land Rover. Then someone else drove it and said the brakes really needed looking at. I found the very cracks in the servo you mentioned, so that was replaced. The brakes were a little better, but still not brilliant. My next port of call was the vacuum pump. I bit the bullet and bought a genuine Wabco one and fitted it. The brakes were suddenly much improved, I was a very happy bunny. However, two weeks later I suddenly had a noise like a noisy tappet and I needed to be able to leg press 1 ton to stop the car 😱. The pump had failed. Fitted a new one and that lasted just over a year. Fitted another new one and that lasted two days. Another new one lasted just over a year again. The next new one was faulty straight out of the box. The next one again managed to last until just out of warranty. All of these pumps were all genuine Wabco ones. Guess what make pump is fitted now and has outlasted all the Wabco one’s. Yes, that’s right a Britpart one 😂

I had a 300tdi disco commercial that did masses of towing miles. That ate vac pumps on long runs almost as fast as drag links and anti roll bar links failed. It had about 5 pumps in 3 years I got fed up in finish and sling an after market one on. That pump is still on that engine now 10 years later

Hey mr. Mike, thank you for sharing. Here in Brazil lots of people choose to replace this vaccum system (300tdi) for the Ford hydraulic system (brake booster). The part number is 5c7z2005b. The fluid and pressure comes from the hydraulic pump (steering). Usually we use the original brake master cylinder from Land Rover. It could be replaced for the Ford master cylinder, but in this case, the brakes go insane. It is advisable to replace the seals, gaskets and pistons on the brake calipers for new ones.

This design of vacuum pump was merely the start of the problems......Td5 units are good (alternator nose mounted)......but the discovery 3-4 tdv6 diesel vacuum pumps?......ho ho ho look up brake servo oil migration TSB ....its hilarious they basically fill the servo with engine oil as the pump runs of off the back of the cams right next to the cam bearing feed = no servo assist ......and puma's are oil fed from an alloy housing with a sandwich plate which becomes un-sandwiched and sprays oil all over the engine bay.....as said in the video the original upright pumps were bomb proof and they even used a modified version on the freelander diesels .

Cracking video mike, we have discussed these in an email as vacuum pumps are the bane of my life, I find they don’t leak but have that horrendous ticking noise which goes up with the revs. My latest Bearmach one has only lasted 6 months before doing it. Am I correct in thinking that if it’s leaking it can only be the seal that is damaged so fixing the end cap is a waste of time? And what is in there to cause the horrendous ticking? As John C has said below I may well have to try a Britpart one this time, all knocked out in the same factory in Turkey I would guess. Have you found this a recent problem or from 1994 onwards? I have had a 300 for twenty years with no issues until the last three years or am I lucky. Thanks Jimbo.

The vacuum pump on the back of the alternator in the old Tatas was not brilliant, when worn the oil could migrate onto the slip rings causing an intermittent connection which in turn fried the regulator. Any thoughts of just using a 12v vacuum pump? I think some Fords used them so that the braking system could be the same in a diesel car as that fitted to the petrol. This reminds me a lot of a friends Series 11, had a weird linkage and butterfly in the manifold to momentarily get vacuum from the diesel.

They’re horrible pumps. Like you, I much prefer the rotary vane pump of the 12j-200Tdi. I have a 300tdi RR Classic, but the brakes are ABS powered brakes with an electric pump and accumulator - the vacuum pump is only connected to the EGR solenoid, so I’ll remove the innards following your instructions and refit it for cosmetic purposes as the EGR is already blanked.
