Ran Chicago, didn’t go as planned but there’s lots to learn from it and doing a major was an incredible experience. It was definitely a brutal reminder that at the end of the day, marathons are hard.

@@ChrisSee good points. I do most of my races in Florida and a random 90% humidity day can pop up, even in the middle of January. I think for my January race, I'm going to have a backup "placing" goal if the weather isn't ideal for a "time" goal

@@RunTommy123 I would recommend researching how much you should adjust your pace based on race condition vs your training conditions. There are calculators and guides out there that I wish I had listened to, LOL. I’m also in Florida - Vero Beach area.

Chicago runner here! Echoing the other comments that the race was really tough, but fighting through miles 20-26 with the same 100+ folks I was cruising through miles 5-20 with made the hurt feel communal And the crowds and signs (especially Ted Lasso references) were the best I’ve ever seen

I ran Chicago. Going into the training block, my goal was a Berlin qualifying 2:45. With the weather, I decided to change that to a 2:50. I stayed on pace until about mile 21, and then it became about setting a PR (>2:54:03). At my 25, the cramping nearly caused me to stop, but I still hobbled in at 2:55:39. I’m proud of my effort in grueling conditions.

Broke both arms at the beginning of this year so as soon as I realized that I would need about 3 months to recover from surgery. My goals were to get use of my arms again and PR in the half marathon. During my recovery on the couch, I discovered your channel and have gotten a lot of joy and motivation from your blogs. Happy to report that I have use of my arms again and managed to pr at the Hamptons half despite pulling my hammy at mile 11.

After first year of running capped off by first race, these are my goals for coming year (in order of importance): 1.) More consistency: 125km a month benchmark; 2.) 10k PB: sub-50 minutes (if accomplished before 1st of july: sub 47 minutes, winning time of participating friends during recent race), set in race; 3.) Half marathon PB: sub-2 hours, set in race; 4.) Finishing an official (organised race) marathon (time not relevant for now, might change); 5.) Continuing my battle against depression becoming/staying mentally and physically fit using running, noticable by lower doses of medication and off course better control over my mood/outlook on life.

On True Love's sleep tip, I actually attribute my great sleep before my last Half Marathon PR to EXACTLY that phenomenon. My football team lost on Saturday, and my race was on Sunday. I fell asleep so quickly fixating on the football game sadness and didn't keep myself up all night fixating nervously on the race itself. Woke up refreshed and sub-1:22!

Goal this year ('21 alone) was just to enter a race or two. Will have done 6: 3 half marathons (1 on trail), one 10K, and one 25K (upcoming) on trails. Next year? Trail marathon. Run total this year: 1800 miles so far, with another 10 weeks to go. More importantly: all injury free. I'll take this. Good luck training for NYC, Seth!

What I've learnt from my goals this year is my priorities. Some of these goals have been a means to an end, some of them have been stretch goals as motivation. It all came down to the sub 3 Marathon, everything else was support work to that. New goal time! - Injury free - No time off due to injury Since June I am now injury free!!! It's like a new lease of life - 100km race, top 10% Peak District Challenge, 10th out of 353 - Marathon race, sub 3 hour Manchester Marathon 2:55:34 - 3000 miles total 2,102.8 milese @ 12 Oct 2021, not looking likely... - 100,000 feet elevation gain 95,778 ft @ 12 Oct 2021, nearly there - 1 barefoot run every week Not every week, but 31 miles total for the year - 1 club run per month minimum (restrictions permitting) Not even close, family life hey!!!

You got me on the Bobo Bars :-) The way I look at it, goals are great, goals focus me, but listening to my body is priority one, especially being I will be 65 Nov. 2nd. I will have to give more consideration to my 2022 goals. The top one is easy! To run and complete my 1st marathon in Los Angeles on March 20th with a 11min/mi pace or better. I am using the Hal Higdon Novice 1 program with a custom training app of his also.

I was debating between taking out my half marathon PR or Marathon PR in 2022. My plan is to up the ante! My Marathon 3:58 PR will fall in 2022. Half in Naples will set me up for the Full at Glass City. I am putting my name in the hat for Chicago with the Twin Cities being a backup in the fall Marathon. I'm going to train specifically for a 3:50 marathon with a few halfs along the way! If I shatter my 1:42 HM PR it will be extra icing on the cake! Possible third marathon would be around December! DGR STRONG!!!!

QD: Was fortunate enough to hit my primary goal of breaking 2:50 in the marathon and qualifying for the 2022 Boston Marathon. For the last few months I've be training for a half-marathon this month. To be honest, the motivation has ebbed and flowed more than I'd like to admit. What I've learned is that maintaining a high level of "laser focus" without proper recovery (mental even more than physical) is not sustainable. 2022's goals will include goals centered around mental and physical recovery.

2/8 of my goals. Not enough races around to try them all and other life priorities got in the way. 1. Remain injury free(learnt this year when to listen to my body and back off for a few days) - Yep 2. Sub 100 (1:40) half marathon; current 1:42:30 - Not Raced one this year as as postponed due to covid. Would be close if i tried 3. Sub 45 10k; current 46:30 - Not raced one but am definitely in sub 45 shape... 4. Sub 20 5k: current 21:35 - Not yet, 20:42 current PB. May be there late December... 5. Sub 6 mile; current 6:15 - Yep, 5:49. 6. Run an ultra. I've done 2 flat road marathons but considering a very hilly trail 50k in Sep/Oct 2021... - No, Cancelled due to covid 7. Hit a 100km (62 miles) training week; recently been at around 45mpw, peaked at 55 in 2019 pre-injury. - No, baby in July has meant i've been crusing at 30mpw ish which has helped with goal 1... 8. Lose weight, aim for sub 70kg at 172cm (5"7.5), currently 77kg. Should help with all the previous goals tbh -No, still around 76/77.

I did not have many goals for 2021 but the number one goal was to complete my 1st half marathon. After it having to be postponed twice, I signed up for a different one and I completed it on October 3rd. I went in not having a time goal but to complete it with minimal running. I finished with a time of 2:27:12. I am totally proud that I pushed myself and did it. Now to get that time faster but it will take baby steps. I have gotten hooked and love to run

My goals this year have been: 1) Run 2000 miles (pivoted off this after a knee injury and being out for 2 months), dropped to 1500, currently 19.9 miles behind target but I should catch up/overtake it this week. 2) Run a Sub-19 5k - close, I went through 5k in 19:05 in my last 10km race. 3) Run a sub 1:30 half marathon - Achieved, ran a 1:29:52 and was on pace for better but the last 3 miles up hill really took it out my legs! 4) Get through my first ever XC season - currently doing, did my first race for it last Saturday, not as good as I would have liked, but I raced on tired legs (training for another HM).

My goal for 2021 was to run the Boston Marathon after my (one and done) 2020 bid was pushed to run it virtually. Those rolling hills for the first ten miles were a killer but I finished the race and loved the crowds. Marathons are as much a mental challenge as a physical one and I was definitely in the pain cave yesterday. Wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

QOD: After a horrible 2020 due to COVID running restrictions in Spain and a few injuries, 2021 so far has been great. I set a 10K PR, from 37:17 to 35:39 but most importantly, I've become a smarter runner, doing the little things that I was too lazy to do before but that pay off in the long run. Now I've fallen in love with running again, I count the hours until is time to get out again. I still have a two goals ahead, a 1/2 marathon in a couple of weeks and a full marathon in December but I no longer pressure myself with numbers. Just do things right and everything will come into place by itself sooner or later. Just enjoy the process.

Sky in French is ciel. Ciele would be pronounced the same though: see-ell. Great videos as usual!

QOD : There have been no goals for this year since the 1st Lockdown here in the UK last year I initially had a goal due to a virtual even that was put on by an Ultra Running Race Organizer over here and I set myself the task to complete a 100 mile week which thankfully I managed to do and received a small belt buckle for my troubles. But since that time (May last year) my running has been hit and miss, the mojo deserted me completely and 2021 so far has been very poor in terms of my running. My running fitness levels have dropped completely so I am now once again trying to reboot my running. So ultimate 2021 running goals where never set as the motivation and the uncertainty of the current environment meant it was hard to find a level to focus on. Now the decisions have to start to be made regarding what / if any goals will be set for next year.... Do I target a race, a distance, a time? Who knows.......

QD: My goals this year were to run 1000 miles and break 1:40 in the half marathon. I'm behind on my mileage goal, but hit 1:33 in the half earlier this year. It's given me the confidence to attempt the full marathon again. My goal is to qualify for Boston.

I am not french but I am from Quebec (french side of Canada). Ciele is prononce like « sea » + « hell » but without the « h ». And in french ciele is « ciel » not « ciele ». 7:18

QOD: I picked up running again this year in May for the first time since the start of the pandemic. I have never been very consistent with it and being in grad school, I set a simple and achievable goal. My goal is to run 250 miles or at least 50 times and I am already at 177 miles and did my 34th run yesterday. I am well ahead of schedule and look forward to stretching myself next year with some races sprinkled in.

QOD: I have crushed my 2021 running goals so far. I have broken PRs within races (new 8k and 10k PR within Broad Street 10 mile race, ECT.) and achieved breakthrough times that I never thought I could do in one year. I just have one more race, the Philly Marathon to close out the year.

Hello Seth, Ciele Athletics is a canadian company from Montreal. Ciele doesn't mean sky in french. I don't know what's the history behind the name. I did some research but didn't find anything about that. Sky in french is "ciel" without the an "e". It is pronounced "seeyale"

Ciele may be a play on words, of sorts. "Ciel" does mean the Sky but it can also can mean Heaven in the religious sense. French nouns have a fixed gender. "Ciel" has masculine gender. Another example, "montagne" is feminine (note the final "e"). It gets more complicated but that's another story. As to Ciele, as the non-traditional spelling of a masculine noun, could be they were going for a French/English play on words ie "heavenly"?

It's ..'SEEYELL'.. It means Sky in French. Many girls are named Cielle! You never met a Cielle in your life? I'm pretty happy to have known one in my life. :) QOD: My A goal is to educate myself abundantly about running health and nutrition. My B goal is to become a much stronger mountain runner, which I find myself struggling with. Seth, I've seen you train differently for mountain running and road running respectively. Does the nutritional intake also change as you train for each of these disciplines? Thank you!
