Many glasses lenses nowadays are resin-based, I have been thinking about seeing if it's possible to make lenticular panels with a clear resin to refract light and make some invisibility effects for objects depending on how they're viewed. It's not just resins that people should be careful with, some of the recent 3D plastics are clear enough to be able to refract and condense light photons in a similar manner, and it doesn't particularly have to be bright sunlight if the refraction is stable. At least you're still with us! Thank you for making people aware of this potentially dangerous aspect of our interest!
@daniel..cooper26 күн бұрын
Very true! If we can spread awareness, it all helps! I posted a vid on another platform and have already had quite a few resin artists say they never thought of this hazard! It's so easily overlooked.

Former fire fighter here --- It's important to check the flammability of your fabrics!! Many fabrics now days are fireproof, I'm guessing a lot of resin fires start from people putting them onto flammable fabrics. There should be a tag on the item which will always tell you how flammable it is. Curtains are a SERIOUS problem with sun catchers etc, but buying fireproof fabric could save you.
@TheBottegaChannel26 күн бұрын
Yup. It's the crystal ball fire hazard effect. It's one of the main reasons why I would cover such an orb or art peice with a dark cloth while it's not in service. It's also a reason why I carry a magnifying orb for survival purpouses as well as for a visual enhancment aid. Oddly enough, mine came from a resin dragon statue. 😂

@@daniel..cooper: To ease your mind research why we see single colors. Clear glass/resin is made up of all colors. If you see say blue the rest of the colors are not present. You need all colors present and a curvature for the lensing problem to occur. Else every clear window that got sunlight through it would set fires. They don’t. No curvature. Now original window glass could cause problems. As it was made from blown glass spheres that while still hot were cut so they could be flattened. But it left a lens effect in the middle. Which could cause a lensing effect. There are still some panes in old houses in New England. All were small. Let in light, but hard to see through. Window glass today is called float glass. Made flat by pouring molten glass onto molten metal. Originally mercury which is molten at room temperature. Suncatchers are normally made of flat pieces of colored glass/resin. Oh. Clear glass marbles should be a problem but don’t seem to be. 😊

Resin objects, glasses, vases full of water, anything that works like a magnifying glass can focus light and create a fire if conditions are right. I was doing a science experiment in fifth grade, making rock candy by putting dissolved sugar in a jar out in the sun. I set fire to the grass. 😳

The concentration of the light source is the key to this experiment. If you had inadvertantly left this sphere on a stand and it was on a table, the varnish will not stop this from happening but might even promote it's happening and varnish is very flamable and will result in a fire quickly, given the right circumstances and conditions. As a result during my healing the lights in the city, in the sky all appeared to look like pretzels. I brought it up to my eyes Dr and it’s because of the scaring. Obviously it has faded as my eyes have healed and lights look normal again. It was a trip.

Thanks for the PSA! Here’s hoping this helps people stay safe. Btw, look up “solar death ray.” It’s crazy how powerful the sun can be. Under the right circumstances, it can melt glass and metal. The bigger the resin or glass piece, the more light it can concentrate, so the more likely it is to start a fire. Also consider that a piece sitting on its own isn’t moving, no shaking or breaks, so the heat will keep building on just one spot. And without someone nearby, there will be more oxygen and less CO2. All the ingredients one needs for a fire: fuel, heat, and O2. Btw, not sure why that one comment mentioned some windows having UV protection as if that disproves anything. The extra energy certainly helps, but UV light is not required to start a fire. 🤷🏻♀️

But being the genius I am, decided to use CA glue instead and it leaked all over the ring, and it's moving parts, in the hinges, all down my hand completely webbing my fingers together while simultaneously burning slightly. Yes these things do generate heat and we should be careful! I used acetone and salt to remedy the situation, but a short cut became a long cut. But in hindsight it was a blessing in disguise because leaking epoxy would have been far worse. It's a kinetic ring with an orb on top filled with silicone oil, glitter, and opal.
