Same here man. We all have the same questions and dudes like this are out here doing the Lord's work and gathering the data for us. My longest possible shot will be an Alaska hunt next year but all my spots around here are under 200yds. 16" barrel for me, and now I feel confident because I wanted a lighter system than my bolt 308 with the option to rapid fire at hogs.

A 100 fps difference in a 16" vs 20" means 50 yards in range difference. Every 100 yards of range is 200fps for a 308 Win. Very nice review.

Never seen your channel before, but this was a really solid video. Straightforward, no fluff, good information. The two barrel lengths are surprisingly close out to 1000 or so. I don't ever see myself shooting beyond half a mile or so where I live, so I think I'll be putting a 16" on my build. I was also impressed by the Arken scope. I keep seeing affiliate marketing for them which always sets off scam alarm bells in my head, but looks like it actually tracked well and has decent glass.

Seeing that the right rounds can stretch the legs of a 308 was nice. My take away is if pushing past 800 yards is your wheelhouse, then opt for a 20"+. Not that a 16" can't do it, but 20" will be more forgiving with environmental variables.

@@Standforwhatsright33 Depends entirely on the cartridge being used. For 5.56 16" is actually quite a good length. I don't think going below 14.5" is advisable for a cartridge which was designed around high velocities, even if you can compensate for SBR shortcomings with (extremely expensive) 77gr loads.

Great video. My personal rig runs an 18" barrel. I originally built it with a 16" SASS barrel but wasn't happy with the longer range accuracy and the weight was horrific. The 18" medium contour is a couple of ounces lighter and the velocity gain is about 60FPS. It's every bit as accurate as the SASS as long as you are not doing mag dumps.

I had a 16-inch and a 20-inch AR in 308 that I used for hog hunting. 90% of my shots are under 300 yards. I wasn't happy with either of those rifles so I built one myself. I went with a Mega Maten-matched upper, lower, and handguard set as the base. I decided to split the difference on the barrel and went with an 18-inch JP Ultra Match. I couldn't be happier with the outcome. I run hand-loaded Barnes 130-grain TTSX bullets right at 2,900 FPS. I consistently get 5-round 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards and they are devastating on game. Great video straight to the point with all the relevant information. Thank you for all the work put into it.

This video is spot on, I argue for a shorter 308 for mid range all the time. I run an Aero with a JPE 16" Stainless Steel barrel with the JP heat dissipater and Odin adjustable GB. I have had consistent success out to 860 yards and in and have had sub moa 10 round groups with 155 grn match ammo and 1 moa with 168 smk and 1.5 moa 178 eld-x. My twist rate is copied from the German H&K DMR at 11.25" which allows for greater accuracy with lighter bullets and the ability to use M882 ball fmj without a tremendous loss in accuracy. (2-3 moa) Very usable rig and have taken several whitetail with it.

Even without the comparison to any high dollar optics, I couldn't agree more with you on Arken for most use cases. I often practice with a RPR in 22lr to get trigger time I can afford and to get better reading wind. At 385m it needs 24 mils of elevation. I can still dial all of that, and it's rock solid in terms of repeatedly dialing back. Thanks for covering the range of gear from really pricey to really accessible. It's appreciated

The NF definitely seemed to have less CA, but that should be expected for the difference in cost. The Arken reticle is okay, but I prefer .2 hashes or even the .25 mil of the Leupold PR-2. As far as performance. I felt the 16” did just fine. It’s hard to give much feedback at 1220 yds since you were well past the transonic range; rounds do weird things in that space and you could have did everything perfectly. Realistically, probably the same for the 20”; I haven’t looked at the calculator to see the retained velocity for that barrel length, but I would wager it was transonic shortly after 1,000 yards. Still, the little extra velocity of the longer barrel length and the precision of that particular rifle bought you some forgiveness at those extended ranges. Great stuff man; I always enjoy your content.

I would be curious to try the A-TIP with the higher BC, but at more than 2x the cost it isn't happening anytime soon. Standard 175gr GMM becomes a little more tricky with decent wind but still very doable. Anything past 1000yds I would be using my 300 win mag.

What I’ve come to recently go with as far as 308 it’s like you said, if you’re staying under a certain distance, say 500 yards, I’ll go with a 16 inch all day. My dd5v3 done good with the hornady 178gr bthp runnin 2158fps and made 1st rd impact @1k holdin 32moa ontop of dialin 25….printed a 3” 3rd at 520 with factory white bx match 178gr…so I tried duplicating that before having a crono and went off pressure sign and grouping and is how I ended at the minuscule 2150fps..lol. Your ideas and rifles are bang on mine brother…I wish you the best holidays and can’t wait for the next one…matt

I would love to see this video with some popular hunting loads. I'm curious how far out you can reach with .308 and still maintain around 1500ftlbs of energy with a 16" AR10.

I was just thinking the same thing for 16 vs 20” barrels on 308, and I’m surprised my theory was pretty close to what the results were. I just ordered a 20” criterion barrel and stoked to build out a 20” more precision based upper and also have a 16” battle rifle upper. Love your channel btw!

Thanks for the video. I was contemplating putting a 20 on mine, but for the distance I shoot you proved a 16 is plenty. After watching this I think spending the barrel money on ammo and improving my shooting is more ideal.. It’s also nice to see the Arken hold its own with a better high end scope. I have no doubt the high end scope is better, but it’s nice to see options for people on a budget or not as picky on glass clarity and such. Nice shooting Hoss..

My opinion is go 16” for most cases unless you’re stretching the limits, then go 26” to get max velocity for 308.

I've got one AR-10 20in long range gun with razor HD gen 2 scope, and I have another rifle that will be complete when I put a barrel and handguard on it. I really want a 16In barrel (or 14.7 pinned) close range with red dot or possibly my Eotech EXPS 3-0 for a CQB version AR-10. Great shooting, Thanks for the video ! I noticed at 1200 with the 16 you had quite a bit more wind, and when you missed with the 20 a few times there was almost no wind downrange.

ANOTHER exemplary example of virtually ALL the differences between bbl length AND ballistics. Nothing I can add at all..and a LOT of envy on your equipment..OR “tool(s)” of choice! I KNOW Tiborasaurus Rex has been pushing Arken for some time now. HE has only “talked” specifics that I’m aware of whereas THIS is real world. MUCH appreciated on some great video editing!

I'm glad to see the performance at range is this close. I have a 1-6 scope on my 16" 308, so I am not thinking about shooting past 300 yards or so (also due to shooting copper rounds out of this thing, and those have a velocity requirement which my rifle imposes a range limit of around 300 yards anyway). I would like to get a 1-10 at some point. I don't really want to give up the 1x, but I could see myself settling for a really good 2-12. Great content, man! Keep it coming.

Do you shoot those ultra high velocity 110-115 grain copper solid 308 rounds? It makes 308 a laser to 450 yards. Like 3200 fps and probably messes stuff up harder than any creedmoor this or that within that distance due to better energy transfer.

Excellent comparison, thank you! I would really like to you put the 20" APR against the SR-25 6.5 22" upper, which I believe you also have. We know that the 6.5 will be more efficient. I'd like to see to what extent this translates into your hit percentage @ 1,000 yards between the two. Maybe extend this comparison with the Ally cartridges as well. I've been on wait lists for both uppers for over a year now. Hopefully next year will be better for their availability.

Nice to see that a lil ole 308 can reach out that far with any sort of accuracy. With all the 28 Nosler, 300 WinMag, 300 PRC...etc, it's refreshing to see someone work a 308 so well. Great shooting!

Loved the video. My thoughts on the barrel lengths are > a 20" to me is a dedicated long range where the 16" is more suited to somewhat closer ranges, lighter and more maneuverable in tight places > all things everybody all ready knows. Having said that, I like the idea of an 18" barrel in that platform and is what I would like to get for myself one day. 18" would be a happy balance between the two, sort of a do all, good at everything barrel length for that platform, unless you need the gun to perform a specific roll. And I'm very impressed with that Arken optic. Good job with video

I inherited a Ruger gunsite scout with a 16in barrel that I planned on using for big game hunting out west. I was really worried it wouldn’t be able to poke out to long distances but this has entirely changed my mind and I realize that practice will make up any difference in performance from a 20in.

Thank you great video. I just bought my first AR-10 (palmetto) and 5-25x52 scope specifically for shooting 1000 yards. Based on this video, I might need to find an even bigger range to get out to 1200+ yds. I do not plan to spend the dollars though, I plan to use the primary arms mill grid for my holds.

I heard good things about the Arken scope by the PRS crowd here in Sweden. It's a lot of scope for the money, if you're just getting into long range, and don't want to break the bank.

What really stands out to me is that both of those guns have very tight elevation groups even at 1200yds , the SD's were good so the ammo certainly has the potential for consistency but the barrels (and shooter) have to be good to benefit from it. Wind is wind its very hard to read especially out in open terrain like that when you don't have a mirage to help so missing an 18.25" wide plate at 1200 is very easy to do because it doesn't take much wind that is basically impossible to account for to push you off. Great shooting, way to represent Washington as you did on the 1 MOA at 1000 challenge.

A possible consideration. If you are running a Primary Arms Scope with the etched BDC reticle, 150g grain bullets need to travel at 2650-2700fps. For 168g your fps needs to be 2600-2650. I was shooting 168hpbt and it's a challenge to get the fps high enough with a 16" barrel to use the BDC reticle. Varget is too slow, RL15 is ok, Rl17 is ok and 4064 is slow, need to run compressed loads with all powders. If I was buying another .308AR I would go with a 20" barrel (18 might be the sweet spot).

Or just say no to BDC reticles unless your goal is simply to get hits on larger targets out to 400-500 yards.

This video came at a good time. My father and I are looking to get a couple AR10's in 308 and we were deliberating about barrel length. He's old school and likes longer barrels but we're in Georgia. Good luck having to shoot over 500 yards anywhere in this state. So to save weight, 16 inch sounds about right, Thanks sir.
