Same here man. We all have the same questions and dudes like this are out here doing the Lord's work and gathering the data for us. My longest possible shot will be an Alaska hunt next year but all my spots around here are under 200yds. 16" barrel for me, and now I feel confident because I wanted a lighter system than my bolt 308 with the option to rapid fire at hogs.

Seeing that the right rounds can stretch the legs of a 308 was nice. My take away is if pushing past 800 yards is your wheelhouse, then opt for a 20"+. Not that a 16" can't do it, but 20" will be more forgiving with environmental variables.

@@Standforwhatsright33 Depends entirely on the cartridge being used. For 5.56 16" is actually quite a good length. I had a 16-inch and a 20-inch AR in 308 that I used for hog hunting. 90% of my shots are under 300 yards. I wasn't happy with either of those rifles so I built one myself. I went with a Mega Maten-matched upper, lower, and handguard set as the base. I decided to split the difference on the barrel and went with an 18-inch JP Ultra Match. I couldn't be happier with the outcome. I run hand-loaded Barnes 130-grain TTSX bullets right at 2,900 FPS. I consistently get 5-round 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards and they are devastating on game. This video is spot on, I argue for a shorter 308 for mid range all the time. I run an Aero with a JPE 16" Stainless Steel barrel with the JP heat dissipater and Odin adjustable GB. I have had consistent success out to 860 yards and in and have had sub moa 10 round groups with 155 grn match ammo and 1 moa with 168 smk and 1.5 moa 178 eld-x. My twist rate is copied from the German H&K DMR at 11.25" which allows for greater accuracy with lighter bullets and the ability to use M882 ball fmj without a tremendous loss in accuracy. (2-3 moa) Very usable rig and have taken several whitetail with it.

Great video. My personal rig runs an 18" barrel. I originally built it with a 16" SASS barrel but wasn't happy with the longer range accuracy and the weight was horrific. The 18" medium contour is a couple of ounces lighter and the velocity gain is about 60FPS. It's every bit as accurate as the SASS as long as you are not doing mag dumps.

Even without the comparison to any high dollar optics, I couldn't agree more with you on Arken for most use cases. I often practice with a RPR in 22lr to get trigger time I can afford and to get better reading wind. At 385m it needs 24 mils of elevation. It’s what happens when you’re away from shooting for many years. What I’ve come to recently go with as far as 308 it’s like you said, if you’re staying under a certain distance, say 500 yards, I’ll go with a 16 inch all day. However and it probably just depends on manufacturer in my case I use LMT and their barrel weights are not that much different, so why limit myself. I just go with 20” for the 308. It covers most distances I intend to cover.

As far as performance. I felt the 16” did just fine. It’s hard to give much feedback at 1220 yds since you were well past the transonic range; rounds do weird things in that space and you could have did everything perfectly. Realistically, probably the same for the 20”; I haven’t looked at the calculator to see the retained velocity for that barrel length, but I would wager it was transonic shortly after 1,000 yards. Still, the little extra velocity of the longer barrel length and the precision of that particular rifle bought you some forgiveness at those extended ranges. Great stuff man; I always enjoy your content.

Could do, if not already done, the same comparison for M1a . . . 16" . . . 18" . . . 22". Would be interesting mostly for us older Viet Nam vets who used both AR and M14 platforms. Only barrel length that will accommodate a bayonet is the 22" . . . just in case it gets up close and personal . . . Great job on your production!

I really like this kind of content. Doing a lot of legwork for me. Arken is doing great things for the money no doubt. Only thing that was a slight downer in this case was the 20” is an accurate match barrel/chamber and the 16” isn’t so the comparison could have been a little better but still very much enjoyed it

A possible consideration. If you are running a Primary Arms Scope with the etched BDC reticle, 150g grain bullets need to travel at 2650-2700fps. For 168g your fps needs to be 2600-2650. I was shooting 168hpbt and it's a challenge to get the fps high enough with a 16" barrel to use the BDC reticle. Varget is too slow, RL15 is ok, Rl17 is ok and 4064 is slow, need to run compressed loads with all powders. If I was buying another .308AR I would go with a 20" barrel (18 might be the sweet spot).

This is a good informative video. A couple of observations; a 308 can sometimes go subsonic at around 1000 yards, sometimes they don't, especially with a gas gun. This might have been part of the problem, especially with the 16" bbl. Also, spin drift is about 0.5 MOA at 600 yards and 1.0 MOA at 1000 yards, so add that in to your windage hold offs.

Excellent comparison, thank you! I would really like to you put the 20" APR against the SR-25 6.5 22" upper, which I believe you also have. We know that the 6.5 will be more efficient. I'd like to see to what extent this translates into your hit percentage @ 1,000 yards between the two. Maybe extend this comparison with the Ally cartridges as well. I've been on wait lists for both uppers for over a year now. Hopefully next year will be better for their availability.

I really want a 16In barrel (or 14.7 pinned) close range with red dot or possibly my Eotech EXPS 3-0 for a CQB version AR-10. Great shooting, Thanks for the video ! It seems that you didn’t hold enough off the left side for the 16” at 1200+ target and could’ve had a solid hit percentage if you shifted maybe 1.6-1.7 over and came down 0.1. But either way awesome to see a 16” .308 stretch its legs that far!

I’ve noticed every time you shoot, you have a suppressor on every weapon. Most people don’t have suppressors and everything I’ve heard seems to indicate the length of suppressor adds to your barrel length for the bullets accuracy and stability. If that’s the case, every time you using roughly 6” more on every barrel that you shoot?? Can somebody clear this up for me?

Great question and actually a topic I’ve made a video on. Short answer is adding a suppressor provides a slight velocity increase but nothing that drastically changes performance. Check it out: Precision rifle FAQ.... Does adding a suppressor change performance? kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZDKqqloepdof5I

Thanks for the video. I was contemplating putting a 20 on mine, but for the distance I shoot you proved a 16 is plenty. After watching this I think spending the barrel money on ammo and improving my shooting is more ideal.. It’s also nice to see the Arken hold its own with a better high end scope. I have no doubt the high end scope is better, but it’s nice to see options for people on a budget or not as picky on glass clarity and such. Nice shooting Hoss..

Personally I'd opt for the longer barrel with a 308 to hit targets farther out and keep the shorter barrel on a 223. If I were "bugging out" the 223 would probably be fine in most cases. Wouldn't really need to snipe anything past 500 yards anyhow most likely, even though we would always fire at 500 yards at the anyhow.

What really stands out to me is that both of those guns have very tight elevation groups even at 1200yds , the SD's were good so the ammo certainly has the potential for consistency but the barrels (and shooter) have to be good to benefit from it. Wind is wind its very hard to read especially out in open terrain like that when you don't have a mirage to help so missing an 18.25" wide plate at 1200 is very easy to do because it doesn't take much wind that is basically impossible to account for to push you off. Great shooting, way to represent Washington as you did on the 1 MOA at 1000 challenge.

The late Bob Milek, gun writer for Guns & Ammo, did an article, where he took a 308 Winchester barrel, and fired it through a chronograph. I forget the starting barrel length, but he would amputate 1inch of barrel, re-crown the muzzle, then test again. The results showed that after 20” of travel, velocities slowed down. Also less than 20” slowed down. Results indicate that for that type of barrel, a TC, if memory serves, with that bullet, 20” gave maximum speed performance.
