Shots on deer are anywhere from 0 yards to that distance and there are so many deer I can wait a few minutes, maybe up to an hour an hour and frequently one will pop out of the wooded area within 300. Based on talking with Barnes, the 150gr isn’t the way I’d go. It has a higher velocity threshold than the 130gr and the 168gr (by a lot for the latter). The bc difference doesn’t let it catch up to the 130gr within the operational window and it doesn’t outpace the 168gr by more than expansion threshold difference. That being said, if you’re hunting typical 300 and in ranges and these shoot accurately, they’ll do the job just fine and I wouldn’t pick either of the other two options if you have a real accurate load with this bullets. Lastly, try LVR powder if you want to exceed 3000 fps. I’ve done that with other 150gr monos in my 22in 308.

That might be so, but Chuck faces possible Grizzly bears. I think the 130 would come up short, just my $0.02...I have a 24" barrel that likes 168 gr SMKs, over 175s. It has a 1:10 twist. If you think about monolithics being slightly lighter bullets, the 150s seem like a sweet spot. For me, same with Elk, which I don't plan to hunt. I do plan Black bear. All of our mileage varies. But a 130 grain doesn't seem big enough. I'm sure it's plenty fast enough.🙂 EDIT: for that matter I think a 6.5 Grendel could take a black bear of 200-300 lbs. (not at extended range)

@@AlaskanBallistics I just watched it, that TTSX was devastating...over 3200 fps, that was XLNT. Do you think a 130 TTSX would take down a black bear? Seems like it could easily, and for that matter even the 6.5CM with a 127 LRX would most likely do it. Let's say 200-300 lb black bear.

Hey Chuck, I am looking for a new coyote hunting cartridge. I currently hunt with a bolt action 308 with the thermal, anything past 240 I have to hold over the coyote. Anyways, what cartridge would you recommend? I was thinking a 243, I would like to deer hunt with it as well. I don’t hand load so I unfortunately can’t use the 130gr TTSX 308s. Buying factory 130grs from barnes is way cheaper than buying a new rifle and more ammo. I can send you a link to a good price. 6mm Creedmoor, 243win, 6.5creedmoor, 25-06, 6.5prc, and 7mm-08 are all good choices. I think there's a 95gr vmax for 6.5 creedmoor, that's very fast.

@@ThemantleofElijahI was born here in southern Missouri. I have been here most of my life. You are correct about the heat, humidity and insects. Permethrin? Helps with the insects. Nothing helps with the heat and humidity. Staying in the air conditioning. The south central MO area has changed quite a bit since the Clinton presidency. Still, maybe the best place in the USA as for the relaxed laws and the good hunting. Deer has always been my favorite, although if you enjoy the woods- I spent a large portion of my life, ‘hunting’. Squirrels, Turkeys, deer - then there is the predator hunting. From varmints such as raccoons and possums. To bobcat and coyote. Every hunt turns into a coyote hunt when I see one. I am a Believer in the Lord Jesus Christ myself. My belief: find where Jesus wants you to be. Which, if he doesn’t want you to be in any place particularly. Go where you feel the most comfortable. Faith- Jesus will never leave you nor forsake you. He will be where you are. May God bless you. In Jesus Name. Contact me sometime. We may have many things in common.

Watched a vid awhile back. Man and his son elk hunted with 308. Can't remember if his Barnes bullet was the 150 or 168. I think the latter. IIRC, the shot distance was roughly 300 yards. Don't think the outcome was favorable after hitting the elk. Either they couldn't find it or it took forever to do so. He called Barnes to inform them. Ultimately he was told something along the lines that the velocity at the distance to the elk was not ideal, and I think he was advised to use a lighter bullet in 308. That's another reason I dropped to the 130s but will consider a 150 for sure. But I don't hunt elk with 308.

I loaded 57.0 gr Reloder 19 and stacked roughly 40 deer including mule deer with that set up over the years. Furthest shot was 185 muley in CO at 255 yards. Never knew how fast they were going but shot well and killed great. Secondary was 165 TSX in 30.06 with around 55.0 H4350. Many muleys and whitetails as well. The original 270 130 gr TSX had more of a secant ogive compared to later LOT #. I still have about 10 of the first batch and they are definitely longer nosed.

I think theoretically the 130, 150, and 168 should all have enough velocity in 308 at 300 yards to expand. I’ve seen the same video/review I believe and I’m not sure if I buy it, based on my experience with both the TSX and TTSX. I’ve also taken game with the LRX, Tac TX, and GMX/CX with good results.
@Calaveras32Spcl2 ай бұрын
@phild9813 the 130 starts faster but BC sucks. The heavier they are, slower the start but better they carry. I think the 168 opens at like 180 fps. That said, on a deer, even if they barely open an 308 should put them in the dirt. I shot my last deer with my handload, 150gr at 3k muzzle, at about 60 yards and turned both shoulders into burger.

When you assume the round is safe to shoot because it is not a max load, you put yourself at risk. You should instruct listeners to start low and WORK UP to maximum FOR YOUR GUN. Each gun is unique. Metalurgy consistency, Chamber size, rifling proximity/leade location, bore size and smoothness, etc are different for every gun. Even 2 guns made back to back on an assembly line by the same person will be different. (Example such as chatter marks in the rifling from different amounts of honing oil used during rifling process) Just because 0.5gr less than max works IN YOUR GUN, Doesnt mean it will for all subscribers. Just a reminder to work up from starting loads. My friend has a big scar between his eyes and on his arm because he ALWAYS USED MAX loads. Never worked up. Blew up his Tikka.

@@AlaskanBallistics I always heard Moose do not move sometimes even when hit square in the kill box. If that is the case, a double/tripple tap is certainly possible. I am not sure if anyone practices that, but im guessing it could be quite effective. If the 2nd or even 3rd round is placed close to the previous rounds, im sure the effect would be greatly compounded, as its basically disrupting tissue that has just been disrupted by the previous round.
