The best deals out there ate on repositioning cruises. They are usually 14 to 21 days and are very well priced. I booked a 16 day cruise from Seattle to Alaska to Japan for less than 200 bucks. Certainly the airfare back from Tokyo will be expensive, but the bonus comes in that I can jump straight back to Seattle and take a second repositioning cruise 21 days to Miami for just over 200 bucks. A month and a half at sea for under 4K. My military retirement check will pay that in a month and the next half month is living at no cost out of pocket

What is a repositioning cruise?
@danwest6803Ай бұрын
@@margaretk9351 A repositioning cruise is when the end of a season the ship moves from one areato the next. Like Miami to Rome in the spring, and then back in the fall. Or Miami to Seattle to set up for the Alaska cruises. They are usually longer than other cruises, 17 to 25 days, and you have to make two one way flights. The advantages are that they are usually low priced, fewer people on the ship, and fewer children

I've never cruised before but for some reason have recently got into watching cruise channels like yours. I saw someone say that they are willing to pay extra for a smaller solo/studio cabin, not for the lounge but for the lack of noise. They said that they're usually a lot quiter, as you don't have kids running up and down the corridor and people having loud conversations etc. I don't know how prevalent that sort of thing is, but they saw it as important. Thought you might find that interesting. X

One more tip: Once you book, make sure you periodically check the fare (or use one of the services like Cruise Plum that will track it for you). I have only booked on NCL, but two different people there told me that if the price goes down they will lower the price you pay as many times as necessary right up until the time of final payment (120 days out); and after that, they will do a 1x courtesy adjustment if the fare goes down, but will only give you future-cruise-credit. I’m not sure about the other cruise lines, however.

When I do cost comparison of cruises I basically do the same things. I figure out 3 costs: the total cruise fare (with taxes, tips and fees), the per day cost, and the same total and per day cost with the upgraded package (or drink package) the line offers. This is because we usually like a drink package and sometimes the higher-end lines offer an upgrade package where drinks are included that actually ends up cheaper overall than a more budget friendly line if you’re adding their drink package onto the cost.

However, I’ve found great deals on solo cabins on both Celebrity (Edge class, solo infinite veranda) and Holland America’s and Cunard’s solo oceanview cabins. Don't forget about Airfare, cruise insurance, and what some call gratuities, and others call service charge. (for example, on NCL, it's $20 pp, per day) These types of gratuities are often not added in until you get on the ship.) The type of gratuities that are added in Booking are for drink and dining packages. A three week cruise can add an additional $840 to your cost.
@30AndAWakeUp Жыл бұрын
CruisePlum includes gratuities in the prices it shows.

Thanks for the solo occupancy and supplement clarification and also the fact that you can find double occupancy (even a suite) for the same price as a solo, solo cabins, etc. Compare, compare, compare, and cost per day is the key. And Norwegian is a much lower level cruise line than Princess. I don’t find a “solo” cabin a good deal either, and they are SO small! CruisePlum is a good tip. Thanks for the tutorial. Have you cruised on Costa or MSC? Just curious as a fellow American.

I have cruised MSC but not Costa. I love MSCs private island.

So many people are finding that high cost of transportation to and from cruise ports is becoming a budget buster. I would include that in calculating the basic costs.
@30AndAWakeUp Жыл бұрын
It varies so wildly from person to person that I keep it just the fixed cost for this kind of thing but in my individual cost of a cruise vid I discuss the non fixed costs.

I realized that I did not hear you mention the shareholder benefit perks to help reduce cruise costs. This works for frequent cruisers on any of the Carnival Corp LInes (There are 9 of them, including Princess). Buy and hold 100 shares of stocks in Carnival Corp, and get onboard credit for every cruise you take. $50 for sailings of 6 days or less, $100 for sailings of 7 to 13 days, $250 for sailings of 14 days or longer. With all the cruises you are taking, you have a 100% return on the stock very quickly.......
@30AndAWakeUp Жыл бұрын
I actually had it in my script and completely forgot to mention it!
@trailtrade Жыл бұрын
Genius! But also sell low delta covered call options on your 100 shares every 30 days and if it gets called away, sell an at the money put option. Ahhh, to be sitting on the deck by the pool selling options on the cruise line you’re sailing on:)

Well done... thank you! In your view, since CruisePlum pulls pricing directly from the cruise line, can better deals be had using a travel agent? While I know there are commissions, back in the day (mid/late 1990s, when I last cruised) you typically got cabin upgrades as the cruise date approached. Still true? Any experience with this?

If the ship is entirely booked, they can sell the cabin to 1 or 2 people. You're still consuming the cabin that two people could have booked. It is a marketing and optimization policy.

How does it work for meals? I'm sure they have different places to eat on the ships. If love to take my 81 year old mom. Do you ever need to have a passport for a cruise? I don't know if any start in the US and to to press of different countries. Yes...I'm a newbie 😁
@30AndAWakeUp Жыл бұрын
There are many places to eat on a ship. Dinning rooms, buffets and specialty restaurants. Im not 100% sure but I think if a cruise leaves the US and returns to the US, you only need a birth certificate to cruise.

One obvious cost is what it takes to get and from the ship. I found an Alaska cruise from/to Vancouver, BC, but from my home the cost to get to Vancouver was more than the cruise itself. Someone like you who wants to take multiple successive cruises needs to continually coordinate transferring from one ship to the other (or staying on the same ship). Super Mario books 60 cruises in advance in order to stay on the same ship and same cabin for months at a time. And he has a condo in Miami for turnover days.
@30AndAWakeUp Жыл бұрын
Biggest reason I didn't include that is the cost can fluctuate a lot person to person. I use a credit card that gets me lots of points for travel. I havent paid for a flight or hotel in over 4 years now. So my transportation cost are just points that I earn from booking cruises.
@nataliajimenez1870 Жыл бұрын
@@30AndAWakeUp I like that you are not so focused on cost that you are limiting the opportunity to travel to different destinations and be in cruise lines that offer great food. Many people that are doing full time cruising limit themselves too much, like never going to Europe because it's more expensive. They are missing so many beautiful cities to save just a few dollars. Also it's worth it sometimes to take a cheaper cruiseline in order to visit some interesting ports and then supplementing that with better cruiselines around areas that you already know. That's how you can get variety
@leapintothewild Жыл бұрын
What kills me is that, sure, charge me for two people in the room occupied by a solo traveler, but DON’T charge me for all the food that second person would’ve eaten! Cruises stock and prepare food for the number of people ON the ship, so they’re not planning to feed that non-existent person anyway. So that double occupancy could be 175% or similar. Just sayin. 😉

This is great. I'm new to cruise life and know I've made a few beginner mistakes (I have a studio booked on NCL Bliss), but that website will be super helpful and quite a time-saver. Already found a couple future items within my criteria, though I am holding off until I get my first two cruises completed (I have 4 booked).

Thanks for all the good info and resources Kevin! That's if I'm not in Mexico or beyond by then, lol. Here's hoping... Cheers!...from North Vancouver

Thank you so much for sharing the Cruise Plum site. I've been using V2G and it's fine but the search feature on CP is unmatched, like it's so good! I'm curious, what is your ideal price per day on each cruise line? I understand that would likely vary by itinerary but I'd still love a baseline to start with since I've never used that figure to judge value of my cruises in the past. I've also only ever cruised with RC and Carnival so I am very green to all the other cruise lines.
