Jaime uses the STEC 3100 to get us down Safely!!

I received a couple questions about the STEC 3100 that inspired this video. I was asked my thoughts on if a non-pilot spouse could use it if the pilot becomes incapacitated and get the plane down safely. I wrote up a very simple check list to store in our glove box. I showed it to Jaime in flight and did one approach talking her through it. Then we went back out and she did it all 100% on her own and got us to the runway safely!
*This is just a video of us discussing and showing what WE have worked out as OUR game-plan. This is not a suggestion or training for other people. Each flying couple should discuss their own plan if and how they choose.

You have to be one of STecs top sales associates by now, lol! Great video! You guys just tackled one of my most thought about (worried about) topics. I will definitely start having some of these conversations with my wife. The 3100's ease of operation makes that pretty simple. Now to start working on the actual landing............ ;-)

You two have inspired my wife and I to work on an emergency plan as well. It’s been in the back of our minds for a couple of years now. I like the idea of a written “checklist” in the glove box, and possibly a few annual “trainings”. Great video and hope to run into you two next week!!!

Kudos to both of you for training for emergency ops. Love how you simplified the procedures to the bare necessities for Jaime. I still find it interesting that as good as she is with the radios and ATC (yes, I know that's what she does) she doesn't really care to learn to fly or get her license. Great video. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!

Thank you Mark! It's pretty amazing how capable but simple it is. That was honestly our first flight doing that with no other discussion and she was able to do it all herself on the second one. Of course we will continue with all the other possible variables but I think it will get the discussion going with other pilots and their non-flying spouses. :)

And that is exactly where Christine and I are. We’ve been discussing that exact scenario. I suggested she complete an online private pilot ground school which she will likely do. Your video really shows how a digital autopilot will allow the non-flying spouse to make it to a runway without having to hand fly the bird. That is critical. Task saturation is an understatement if they have to hand fly, talk on the radio, maintain altitude and airspeed, and find a runway, for the FIRST time. Jaime was very calm and capable all because of the digital autopilot. Guess what just moved up the priority list. After all SAFETY first! Thanks again for continuing to “show” the aviation community the hows and whys of your equipment.

This is awesome that 1) you're taking the time to do that, and 2) she's that interested. Great job, guys. This was one of your best episodes. Practicing emergency procedures before an emergency is the best way to make sure the procedures will work. A suggestion, print the checklist in an oversized and easy to read font with double spaced lines. In a real emergency, it will make it easier to get through the steps with out making a mistake. We use circle, slash for place keeping on procedures. BTW, Jamie seems to always drive her own car. Doesn't she trust your driving?

Dear Kevin and Jamie, very happy to see this video and I hope that you will practice fairly frequently. What a good video. Especially that you two have children, family and friends that fly with you. If Kevin ever becomes incapacitated due to whatever reason, (doesn't have to be death) Jamie will have the confidence and ability to take the bird down safely. Absolutely essential for any family to know and to practice. In flight emergency health issue may not happen often but they can and do on occasion. I would strongly encourage any pilot with a non pilot wife to at least practice the basics from time to time to keep the procedures fresh in their mind. You just might save a life or lives. Thanks for a great video of how it can be done. Of course planes not as well equipped might take a little more knowledge but that should be no factor in teaching wives or perhaps children the basics. Great Job.

Kevin, Nice job on the video. Jamie excellent job on the approach "nailed it". This is probably something everyone should talk to about anyone they fly a lot with. Unfortunately I don't have a sweet auto pilot. But at least I can work on some kind of emergency get it on the ground plan. So far my wife and girls haven't been too open to handling the controls but I will continue to work on it. I now have a engine bolted back on my plane, just have a 2 to 3 hour break-in test flight and then back to some regular flying. Thank you guys for all the hard work you guys put into these videos. What an awesome idea, Kevin. Jaime did a great job. A couple more times, and she’ll have it down pat. She seemed pretty calm, but I’m sure her ATC training gives her the ability to be calm under pressure. She didn’t even seem to blink when you said to “assume you were dead”. That could be a very frightening time, but she seems like she would be able to handle it, and get y’all on the ground. She should take flying lessons. She’d be good at it. That’s just my thoughts.
