I ‘ve lived in the Bay Area since the 80s, and I love the wine country. It’s one of the most wonderful, beautiful places on earth! And yes, it’s true, the Bay Area has changed quite a lot. I love the weather, the area, the scenery, the terrain, but it’s SOOO expensive, to live here. Healthcare has deteriorated, many medical professionals and Drs have left bc they can’t afford to live here, all the good restaurants are gone, there are few niceties like a good French bakery (or ANY bakery), the seafood shops have gone, no butchers or delis, and it’s become very built up in an unattractive way. Few to none family run businesses, everything is a chain, even the Asian markets, which are equal to the number of traditional American supermarkets like Safeway. Even Whole Foods is nothing special now. It just feels so different living here. I no longer like it, but we have our home we have invested so much of ourselves in. Can’t take it with you. 😢

The So glad to learn the history of the wine train. I never knew it had been in existence since, what did he say, the 40s? But it was not in use. I live in Northern Ca and am very familiar with the wine country and never knew that. I really wanted to ride that train, especially when new, but my husband was a spoiler: he never wanted to bc he thought it was “touristy.” There was talk at the time the wine country would become touristy as a result….of course tourists always are attracted to the wine country, like any of the special places on earth where people go for holiday, or vacation, but it never became touristy. It’s charming and beautiful there. But everything there has become much more expensive.

Three years ago, wife, friends and I took this train. The tour was wonderful and the food on board was excellent. Best of all, thanks to the Napa Wine Train management, our group got a full refund for the simple reason that, as we booked our lunch for the return trip (the choices were either lunch on the outward bound trip or on the return trip), and as we were enjoying the sumptuous lunch after the tour of the vineyards, the train halted and we continued our lunch as normal. We were later told that the engine broke down and we had to wait for a bus to take us back to Napa City. To us all, it was just a small glitch as we had already enjoyed the outward journey along with the vineyard tour. So in fact we only had 1/4 of the trip left and we were really enjoying the lunch accompanied by magnificent wines although the train was stationary. Imagine our pleasant surprise when we arrived back in town and were told that we will all receive refunds!! Thanks, again, Napa Wine Train!

That food looks almost as good as those tacos in TJ. I still am traumatized by Mark's amazing videos from there. I lived in the Bay Area for almost a decade, and the beauty and nostalgia, coupled with such a good vibe from the video, was powerful and comforting. Bon apetit.
