that actually was not a correct statement when I was in college (1990-1994). I lived in Illinois and I could not afford the five state schools (Northern ILL, Western ILL, Eastern ILL and Southern ILL) and didn't have the grades to get into U of I. I ended up going to an out-of-state school and it cost me LESS as an out-of-state student than it did as an in-state student. Plus I only had to pay one year of out-of-state tuition before I was considered an in-state student and my costs went down even more. I literally don't understand these outrageous costs in colleges today.

Activities can get very expensive, they have talked about it on the show many times. Try making a budget category for them. For food, try writing down what meals cost and then pick meals based on what you are trying to spend. My sons favorite food is pizza, that got expensive quick. Now we make it from scratch, super cheap and we have it down to 20 minutes now.

Agreed, but it's never going to happen. How would colleges and the feds continue making insane amounts of money by keeping ignorant young people saddled to a lifetime of indentured servitude? The revenue from unregulated federal student loans is insane, and they are the only thing keeping two thirds of US universities afloat, as well as the sole reason those same universities don't have to charge affordable rates. Educate your own children. The system counts on them not knowing better.
@jennys2543

@@smittysmeee What are you talking about? It was literally that way before Obama took student loans into the hands of the federal government. Before Obama, student loans were almost all held entirely by private lenders who absolutely more restricted the amount of money a student could borrow based on their expected earning potential with the degree. Obama is truly the reason this got out of hand by allowing such easy access for students to take out insane amounts of money which in turn allows universities to charge much more.

Go to trade school people!!!!!! College has become less and less worth it financially to attend. Even if one is majoring in a STEM. There is nothing wrong with going to a trade school to become electricians, plumbers, auto and diesel mechanics, AC technicians, etc. These are real world in demand skills that pay well and they do not take 4-8 years of your time to get working. Many of those who do go into the trades can end up working for themselves if they are enterprising enough.

Isaac Spencer - I would have given you and your uncle 10 thumbs up if KZbin would have let me. Way to go uncle! For the price I paid for a brand new 2010 Toyota Yaris, your uncle went and learned a valuable marketable skill in only a fraction of the time and cost a typical college student would take to get a bachelors. He gets paid more than many professors who teach college. I have a nephew who is just starting his sophomore year in high school. Me and his mother (my sister) are trying to steer him in the direction of going to trade school. It was my sister and her husband that initially wanted my nephew to go to college, but seeing how God awful outrageous the cost of college has gotten, they have both became quite receptive to my trade school suggestions. I tell my sister that while many of my nephew's little friends are going to college and racking up student loan debt, he can be out in the real world after a year in trade school and earning good money. The main problem with college regardless of the price tag is that one isn't earning and producing anything while in school learning. My nephew could be making $50-70k per year before he is old enough to legally drink.

Let's say that they are able to throw $40,000/year at their debt, hypothetically. They will take 8.2 years to clear their debt if they lived in a hypothetical world where interest payments didn't exist. Let's say that their total student debt is sitting at a 5% interest rate, they will pay $16,800 this year just in interest. I think that Dave is being optimistic when he says they could clear the debt in 4-6 years.

@@bryangomez1384 Okay I live in CA and have family on the East coast. It depends where you live but most states the cost of living will be significantly cheaper. 70k in CA is still more then 40k anywhere. There's cost of living calculators so go do some research. Maybe 50k some in comparison to some, but that would be the worse cost of living comparison. Cars, food, gas, going on trips, insurances, they are not much different nationwide. Only major difference usually is housing prices. But even if you compare a 200k house on east coast to a 400k one in CA. The difference in mortgage may only be around 1k a month or 12k a year more.

Sure, that would be no problem. The whole point of making them dischargeable is to lower the possibility of a borrower getting that far in the hole in the first place.
