My husband took a 60K student loan for law school and was still 55k in debt when I met him. He had been working for 2 years by then but only paid 5k off, which is unacceptable to me. Still I ended up marrying him and together we paid off the rest of the loan in 8 months. We rarely dined out or bought anything nice in the last 8 months. When it comes to paying off student loans, it's all about living within your means.

98fawaz She might be a foreigner, like me. In Europe, for example, you can go to Law School directly after you finish highschool, at 18-19 years old. In fact, I think only Law Schools and Medicine Schools in the USA require you have other college studies before you apply to them. In most countries you can go there directly.

Yes you are 100% right. My so called dream of becoming a tax attorney after passing the CPA exam when I was an ambitious young man, was dashed when I realized how terrible the job market for attorneys and the unbelievable debt levels. Fortunately, I did not attend law school, smartest decision I ever made. Plus I couldn’t sit in class with a bunch of arrogant law professors who make $200 k a year to teach two courses.

It’s a common misconception, fluffed up by the law schools themselves, that attorneys make 6-figures a couple of years out and lots of them go to big law. Well big law accounts for a single digit percentage of most law schools and real workaday legal jobs don’t touch 6 figures in a major market like Washington DC for the first 7 years. I can’t imagine how long it takes in small markets like Charlotte. Law schools lie about their employment statistics. Unfortunately many of us were already waist deep in debt when the 2008 financial crisis pulled back the curtain on the profession. I relied on the employment statistics in choosing the state, cheapest option available. If I had known the real numbers, I probably would have made different choices. I expect that’s true of many young attorneys these days. Good luck, comrade!

Dave you are correct, but the problem is when you are older you are wiser with money, and know better on what loans you should take out. When you are 17 &18 years going to college you have no idea about how to save or use money. The problem is you can't give large loans to 17,18,19, &20 years they don't have a good grasp of the concept of money, until near your 30's.

Why would a person even go into a quarter million in debt unless a 100k per year job was guaranteed immediately after graduation? By the time they get through school and pay the loans off and get their incomes up there will be plumbers and electricians that have worked the same time making over 100k and they will own their houses and have decent lives. It's just not worth it unless you're going to be a doctor or some other thing that's extremely specialized.

Sadly, law school is a bad deal. I considered law school but the accounting education made me realize that the cost was too much. I am glad that I passed on that decision. I am doing much better financially than if I decided to attend law school. If you do land a Big Law job that pays six figures they work you like a dog for a couple of years, Fire you and replace you with the next batch of students. There are about 200 law schools in this country pumping out new law graduates every year. The numbers don’t look good.

Not to be negative but the majority of lawyers never make 6 digits. The “average” foisted on law school prospects is based on including the top 10% of attorneys. The average of the bottom 90% is considerably less, and there’s no guarantee of outcome.

My wife has 30k student loans, I just pay it off while she's pregnant with the kids but I don't allow her to get any fancy stuff, no fun no fancy things, and if she complains I remind her of her student loans. I love her and I think it's fair. Before I met my wife I met a girl with a masters in teaching from a private university with 80k of debt. I wouldn't sign up for that, I wouldn't marry her!

She doesn't want to talk about it, but I printed up a summary of her loans and post it on the wall near our home office desks, I make it very visible and transparent. I think it works, We've only been married a year so I'm still learning how to be a good husband and her a good wife. I have faith in myself and our marriage :)

One of the long term ways I want to pay my loans back is by paying $2500. Which is the amount you can pay so you can get that back in your taxes. Maybe it'll be the full $2500, things change. Then take that $2500 and do it all over again. Just recycle $2500 and have work for you. Thats just one angle.

5/16/19.....This guy owes $21,000. for his college/law school debt.... but his fiance owes $220,000. for her college/law school debt. He should pay for his debt....then let her pay for hers. I wonder what tier law school they went to. 40k sounds REALLY low, even for first year. It also sounds like they are close to DC. They can't get a government contract or a state job? To get them on debt forgiveness?

How the heck did they get those monthly payments? My wife and I combined make half the money they do and have half the student loan debt with approximately the same interest rate. But, our monthly payments are 4x higher than this couples and every time I try to get a reduced payment I am told that I am ineligible for reduced payment because I make too much money.

I don't get these student loan amounts. Every one of them seems to be six figures these days. Here's what I don't understand. Why was it just horrible when I was around $20,000 in debt but yet it's perfectly acceptable for someone to be a quarter of a million dollars (or more) in debt? Is it because mine was mostly dumb decision credit card debt while someone else's was student loan debt? Is a quarter of a million in the hole better than when I was in the hole for a fraction of that? Sure, a lot of people will tell me "it's because they invested in an education". That may well be. But here is the kicker. I am debt free. I paid all of my dumb decision credit card debt off some years ago. Yet people who owe on student loans still have debt while I don't. So, explain to me again why their debt was better.
